FAITH

Faith is leaning on God because He is trustworthy. Faith is allowing myself to be led by someone other than myself. God is all knowing, all powerful and at the same time—all loving. He created me and desires what is best for me. Faith is not blindly believing something without evidence. Faith is a type of knowledge that is sure. Based on my experience, I know that God’s word is true; that He fulfills His prom- ises. When I have trusted Him and abandoned myself to Him, my experience has turned out well. On the other hand, when I have not cooperated with God out of fear, events did not turn out to my advantage. Intuition is a knowledge on which I can rely. God speaks in a quiet voice which always respects my freedom. He never forces me to do anything.

Faith is a journey. I am learning that I can allow God to lead. I continually experience the reality that He knows things which I do not know, such as the future. He is the Creator, and I am the creation. There is no comparison between His knowledge and mine. I desire to enter the plan he has for me.

The other option is to trust in myself. We each have a temptation to rely on what seems more secure. However, my security cannot come from myself: I cannot give myself life or meaning. The greatest suffering is not to have a purpose, not to have a role. God does have a purpose for my life. He sees my life as of the greatest importance, and sent His Son out of love for me.

Why did God give me life at this time and in this particular place? What is God doing in the world now? In the spiritual battle that is raging, what is the role that He has chosen for me? The role given to me is one that no one else can fulfill. If I do not ac- cept the mission, others will be negatively influenced.

I am most free when I cooperate with God. He does not desire a thoughtless robot; He wants to work with me. He wants me to involve Him in my thoughts and actions. He wants us to work together. I contribute and God contributes. The results are some- thing that comes from both of us.

The devil is full of lies as he tries to prevent us from walking by faith. He wants us to believe that God cannot be trusted. God does not exist. God is far away. God does not know what is best. Instead of allowing such lies to prevent us from acting, we should mediate on Jesus on the cross. THAT is the truth. God can be trusted, God has come to us, and loves us so much that He gave His blood for us. Let us believe this truth and trust this God and walk by faith.

The Blessed Mary is the model of faith. She trusted in the goodness of God and abandoned herself to His will. She did not doubt that God is Love and works in ways that she could not fully comprehend. She trusted God and not herself. Mary pray for us and give us the gift of faith.

God bless, Fr. Mark

Padre Mark
