Benedict XVI canonized three priests and one woman religious, and urged the faithful to make their lives, like the saints did, "a song of praise" to the Trinity. The persistent rain that fell in Rome did not discourage the tens of thousands who filled St. Peter's Square for the canonization of Father George Preca, Father Szymon of Lipnica,OFM, Father Charles of St. Andrew and Mother Marie-Eugénie of Jesus. Benedict XVI said in his homily that the glory of God "is reflected in the life of the saints." The Pope urged the faithful to turn their gaze "toward the 'opened heavens' to enter with the eyes of faith into the depths of the mystery of God, one in substance and three in persons: Father and Son and Holy Spirit." The Holy Father said that "God's wisdom is manifest in the cosmos, in variety and beauty in its elements but its masterpieces are the saints." Citing Scripture, the Pontiff said: "Wisdom is an aura of the might of God and a pure effusion of the glory of the Almighty; therefore nothing that is sullied enters into her. "For she is the refulgence of eternal light, the spotless mirror of the power of God, the image of his goodness. And she, who is one, can do all things, and renews everything while herself perduring; and passing into holy souls from age to age, she produces friends of God and prophets." Through Christ Benedict XVI said that in a similar way God's love is poured into the hearts of the saints -- "that is, the baptized" -- through the Holy Spirit. He said that "it is through Christ that the gift of the Spirit passes." "Through Christ," he continued, "the Spirit of God comes to us as principle of new, 'holy' life. The Spirit puts the love of God in the heart of believers in the con- crete form it had in the man Jesus of Nazareth. "In the same perspective, of God's wisdom incarnate in Christ and communi- cated by the Holy Spirit, the Gospel suggested to us that God the Father continues to manifest his plan of love through the saints." The Holy Father continued: "Each individual saint participates in the riches of Christ taken from the Father and communicated at the right time. "It is always Jesus' own holiness, it is always him, the 'holy one,' whom the Spirit forms in 'holy souls,' making them into friends of Jesus and witnesses of his holiness." The Pope added, "Let us be drawn by their examples, guided by their teach- ings, so that our entire existence becomes, like theirs, a song of praise to the glory of the Most Holy Trinity." This has been an impressive gathering of members of the Franciscan Family worldwide, together with the respective Ministers General. The Chapter commemorated 800 years of Franciscan presence and history in the Church, ever since the approval of the first Form of Life written by Saint Francis and presented to Pope Innocent III in the spring of 1209. This issue of our Franciscan Review is dedicated in a special way to this event. It is important for all Franciscans, especially younger Franciscans in formation, to appreciate our roots and our history, in order to love our Family that has been one of the greatest achievements of the Catholic Church. I was talking to some of our young friars from the Holy Land Custody of the Friars Minor who took part in this Chapter of Quarterly journal of 88 Mats. Like many others of their age they returned enthusiastic and Franciscan culture published enriched by their experience. They told me that they appreciated since April 1986 the talks given by prominent Franciscan leaders and scholars, as well as the special audience given to them by Pope Benedict XVI at Computer Setting: Castel Gandolfo. YOUFRA AS AN ANSWER TO THE CHALLENGES OF OUR TIME When I was preparing this report, I was thinking about what the most important issues are for YouFra today. While I was reading different texts to prepare myself, I found words of blessed Pope John Paul II which he spoke during the Vigil for the Feast of Pentecost in 1998 and which also express a very clear call for Franciscan Youth: “Thus we see an urgent need for powerful proclamation and solid, in-depth Christian formation. There is so much need today for mature Christian personalities, conscious of their baptismal identity, of their vocation and mission in the Church and in the world! There is great need for living Christian communities! And here are the movements and the new ecclesial communities: they are the response, given by the Holy Spirit, to this critical challenge at the end of the millennium. You are this providential response.” Keeping in mind this last sentence: “You are this providential response”, I thought of the responsibility that Franciscan youth has towards the Church and society in which we live. Reading different documents of the OFS on YouFra, I see this same message is recognized by the OFS. That is why in the past several years the attention has been given to YouFra and its development. Here I would like to say a few words on several issues about YouFra which mostly coincide with the Conclusions of the last General Chapter held in Hungary – formation, presence in the world, communication and emerging fraternities.

Eine Art Entdeckungsreise in eine neue Welt. G Das Studium von Philosophie und Ethnologie an der Universität Wien vermittelte mir darüber hinaus das Kennenlernen von erweiterter Welt – an Denkweisen, Kulturen, Musik, Religionen, Spiritualitäten … Dieses Kennenlernen bezog sich auch auf Menschen. Es muss – wenn ich mich recht entsinne – das erste oder zweite Weihnachtsfest als Student wieder einmal zuhause im kleinen Dorf gewesen sein, als ich zu diesem Fest einen Gynäkologen aus Khartoum und einen Gehirnchirurgen aus Manila auf den Bauernhof einlud. So konnte auch meine Familie zuhause etwas von der weiten Weltluft schnuppern. Damals war von meinem Weg zum Priestertum noch nicht die Rede. Diese überraschende Wende kam erst etwas später. Mein Interesse an der Verschiedenheit der Welt kam mir als Pfarrer der Pfarre „Auferstehung Christi“ in Wien-Margareten (5. Bezirk) zugute. Als der Wunsch eines afrikanischen Priesters, der für die englischsprachige Afrikanisch-katholische Gemeinde zuständig war, nach einer größeren Kirche an mich herangetragen wurde, suchte ich Wege, dieser Gemeinde – in Abstimmung mit dem Pfarrgemeinderat – in meiner damaligen Gemeinde ein Stück Heimat zu geben. Aus einer eher kleineren anderssprachigen, anderskontinentalen Gemeinde von ca. 70–80 Personen wurde im Laufe etlicher Jahre eine Gemeinde, die über 400 Leute anziehen konnte. Gemein- sam gestalteten wir den Palmsonntag, Fronleichnam, das Pfarrfest ... Die Reaktionen der Gemeinde waren quer durch die Altersgruppen entweder recht positiv, immer wieder aber auch kritisch.

En respuesta a las metamorfosis de los tiempos modernos, en el mundo musulmán ha habido un resurgimiento contemporáneo del islam en forma de fundamentalismo y de islamismo militante que, al final, justifica el recurso a la violencia armada y al terrorismo. Los fundamentalistas cuentan con un precedente medieval en el pensamiento rigurosamente ortodoxo del teólogo Ibn Taimiya (1263-1328), que sistematizó una interpretación integrista de la tradición y del Corán. A mediados del siglo XVIII, en Arabia, Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab (1703-1792) creó otra versión del fundamentalismo islámico, buscando un puritanismo coránico. Ya en el siglo XX, los ecos y la inspiración de Ibn Taimiya están presentes en las elaboraciones del egipcio Hasan al-Banna (1906-1949), fundador de los Hermanos Musulmanes, y su correligionario Sayyid Qutb (1906-1966), influyente ideólogo del yihadismo; el indio Muhammad Ilyas (1885-1944), erudito fundamentalista que fundó el movimiento Jamaat Tabligh; el indopaquistaní Abdul Ala Maududi (1903-1979), teólogo y pensador islamista, fundador del partido Jamaat e-Islami; y, en la estela del chiismo, el ayatolá Ruhollah Jomeini (1902-1989), jefe supremo de la revolución islámica iraní. Michael Anthony Perry ofm, elected on 22 May 2013. He was Vicar General of the Order. His life experience includes a period of ten years missionary work in the Democratic Republic of Congo and also the service to the brothers as Minister Provincial of the Sacred Heart Prov- ince in the USA. The election of a new Minister General comes at an oppor- tune moment for the Order. Pope Francis has introduced a new style of leadership in the Church, which in a certain way is unique.
