(continued on Page 3) THE CALL TO CONVERSION: IS YOUR HEART OPEN TO CHANGE? BY CELINE FOOK 2| EDITOR’S NOTE

LATEST ON EDITOR’S NOTE INSTAGRAM It’s already September! Parishioners have been busy the last two months, from bible study sessions by Fr Eugene Vaz, to the OLPS Leadership Engagement and Development Series (LEADS) talks. Our Parish Pastoral Council and various ministries have been hard at work to provide activities that would help in growing our faith and renewing leadership. Ultimately, the question we’d like to ask in this issue is - are we experiencing continuous conversion?

This month, 145 OLPS parishioners will be attending the Conversion Experience Retreat (CER) by Archbishop William Goh, from 5 to 9 September 2018. It will be an exciting time for our parish to have so many parishioners come together to receive God’s Holy Spirit. Meanwhile, the rest of the parish is invited to join in the Parish Intercessory Prayer sessions held from 5 to 8 September, 8.00pm to 9.30pm (details on the right). We are fighting a spiritual battle through prayer. Together, we will push against the stronghold of evil as we pray for freedom from sin and for hardened hearts to be won for Christ.

Conversion is not only just for these 145 parishioners. It is for everyone. In this issue of Good OL Times, we’ve put together pertinent reflections on conversion and spiritual growth. We challenge our relationship with holiness in You Can Be Holy Too! Is this notion really out of reach? In Running the Race – we are reminded that our faith, like our journey in life, is not a sprint but a marathon with hurdles. How can we give our best run in this race and persevere till the end?

Looking around us, there are actually many parishioners whom we can emulate. In particular, we highlight our young and upcoming leaders in the article Celebrating Service; and in the article Modern Martyrs, we are inspired by fellow Catholics in our era, who have run the full distance, to the extent of dying for their faith!

Finally, with the Family Life Society’s para-counselling team now providing counselling services at our parish, we hope that greater awareness can be brought to the issue of depression, as this often has serious consequences if left untreated.

A deeper spiritual life in Christ is not without its rewards. As we journey closer towards God, Philippians 4:7 encourages us, “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” How wonderful it is to experience this peace! This year-end, let us be hungry - not for the upcoming festivities or the next holiday trip, but for life in Christ!

Christ and his disciples call us to conversion, and this call to conversion resounds even in the lives of the baptised. In this issue of the Good OL Times, Celine Fook explores the call to conversion through Christ’s teachings in the Bible, and discovers the conversion stories of some of our OLPS parishioners.

WHAT IS CONVERSION? Have you ever believed something so strongly that Saul, laid his hands on him, and said, “Brother Saul, you thought everyone who had a different opinion the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on your way Conversion can be understood as the changing from you was wrong? The Lord had gifted me with the grace of reconciliation with my own father. I did not have a good relationship with him. Behind closed doors, I would scold him for reasons unknown. However, God changed me and gave me humility to work on my relationship with my dad. The grace of God gave us time to heal, till the day my dad passed away peacefully at home.

Through this experience with my dad, I have caught a glimpse of what God’s love is about. What Jesus is trying to convey to all of us in the New Testament is that we have a loving Father; one that is always running to us, even when we are running away from Him.

GOT: What is conversion to you? Esther: Conversion has a lot to do with the heart; it changes a person in mind, body and soul. It cannot be categorised as only something major; it can be little things as well. A conversion happens when God touches you deeply, when you have an intimate moment with him, and when you change your beliefs.

So can we ever be holy? In a message to the members of Catholic Fraternity As Emeritus Benedict XVI pointed out, of Covenant Communities and Fellowships, St When we think of holiness, “Holiness does not consist in not making mistakes John Paul II said “True holiness does not mean a God immediately comes to or never sinning. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:10) Here in Singapore, we do not think much about being persecuted or killed because of our faith. But such dangers are a reality for our brethren in many parts of the world, even in countries where Catholics make up the majority. Here are three modern-day martyrs who lost their lives, but helped and inspired many in the process.

In Spotlight, Good OL Times features Instagram-worthy images from parishioners of how they recognise God in the small or ordinary things. This issue we turn the spotlight on a recent pilgrimage of Camino de Santiago, where our parishioners and Fr Bruno experienced God in nature. Walking via the Le Puy route in France, they journeyed for 11 days in July, covering a total of 200km in the hot summer!

We walked between 16 – 27 kilometres each day during the summer heat of 29 - 37 degrees! It was not easy and we suffered from blisters and muscle aches!

We took the popular and scenic Le Puy route, also called “Via Pondiensis” (736km in total) which is one of the four popular French pilgrimage routes towards Santiago. It starts from Le Puy and ends at the border town of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. From there, it actually takes another 774km to reach Santiago!

Despite facing physical, emotional and spiritual challenges, our group was rewarded with the views of the scenic French countryside. It was a good break from our busy lifestyles in Singapore.
