The Tradsheet Founded 1967 Ignore the weather outside, it will soon be show season. Newsletter of the Traditional Car Club of Doncaster February/March 2020 1 Editorial, My first two main items will come as no surprise. The AGM is called for the 12th February at the Burghwallis, our nor mal club venue. It is the chance for all members and joint members to look at the accounts, elect the committee and have your say on how the club is running or what you would like the club to be doing. Obviously, you can make suggestions throughout the year but the AGM can vote and make club decisions. The Agenda and minutes of the last meeting start at page 5 and include a form for you to nominate whoever you like for the committee. You can copy the form if you like but must be given to the Chairperson before the start of the AGM please to comply with the rules. Renew your membership. A simple glance around the r oom on a club night shows a happy bunch of people chatting and enjoying the evening in the warm when it is dark, cold and wet outside. Classics may be tucked away safely but members still meet up because we like it. Never think that we are a sun- ny day only club. Getting those forms and subs in means that the committee can spend more time or- ganising things to do and less chasing you up. Thanks to all who have sent theirs in already, there will be membership cards in this envelope for those who we have not seen yet at club night. The Deaf Trust show will be held on Sunday 28th June 2020. Now this date is confirmed we can get on with the detailed planning of sponsors, entertainment etc. If you know of businesses that would like to advertise in the show programme that goes to 7000 people at least, let me know. Looking forward to another grand day out. Winter– usual reminder about checking forecasts, lights, tyres etc so you don’t get caught out. May be worth taking a drink and something to eat, as well as a blanket in case of hold ups or breakdown. When the engine goes off, so does the heater. It can be very cold waiting for the breakdown truck. Tradsheet content, is there something that you would like covered? I said last time that I really enjoyed the first car and epic travels items sent in by members. Your journeys out are entertaining as are the up- dates on the various projects that you are doing. I will always find things to fill the pages, if you are lucky you might even like them, but members items will always take priority as they are actually more interesting. If you don’t like writing stuff, tell me at a club night and I will write it. It’s called team- work. Thanks to those that do this already but I am sure that there are many good stories not yet shared. As for my cars, I have done little other than check oil, tyres and coolant because it is cold and/or wet. My days of changing clutches in the snow are long gone. I had to change the Herald battery so got one a bit bigger so I can drive round with lights and wipers on, listening to the CD without worrying about more power coming out than being charged back in. Most noticeable is that the indicator light, which used to go quite slowly on tickover, now flashes away as if I were still moving. My Mazda Bongo is still in the garage. It just cut out on an M62 slip road when I was taking a Christ- mas tree to my daughter’s house (told her she was starting Christmas too early) and wouldn’t restart. No apparent reason why it stopped so breakdown brought me home on the flatbed of shame. It seems that one of the rockers has tipped over, probably damaging the valves so it is an engine out, head off and look, then repair job. As I said, too cold for me so into the gar- age it went, am waiting for damage assessment and estimate with fingers crossed. Safe Motoring, Andy 3 In the press recently is the story of the auction of the Mustang used by Steve McQueen in the film Bullitt. Apparently, it sold for 3.74 million dollars, including buyer premium. It’s a nice car with a good bit of his- tory but that’s a lot of money. And No, I don’t know how many times they went past the same green VW pootling down the street. New cars and pollution. Another story is about cities bringing in restrictions to help air quality. Starting with diesels as the dirtiest vehicles, there be combinations of bans and extra charges. This will help explain the plummeting new diesel car sales even though much work has been done to reduce emissions. New car sales overall have dropped by 2.4%, but diesels have dropped by 21.8% this year marking the 33rd consecutive month of diesel decline. Although there has been a 144% rise in battery electric cars, their market share is only 1.6% so insignificant. Buyers are switching to petrol so it will not be long before the debate about greenhouse gases, which diesels don’t produce in such quantity, re-emerges. Fuel Pipes. We are all being advised to check and/or renew fuel pipes. The changing na- ture of fuel, with more vegetable content, is more corrosive to old rubber In the meantime, be components. As the newer fuel mixtures become more widespread, there is careful of the fork lift an increased chance of fuel pipe failure which could lead to classics catch- Tucks. If you know different, please let me know so I can pass this on. Heed these warnings as most of us have old fuel lines. ————————————————————————————————————————— And, finally, some sad news for this page. We have been told that Tony Drury, husband of former member Pam, died in early December. Most will recog- nise Tony driving the early Triumph Herald that was remarkably original. They left the club recently as they were moving, had no garage for the car so sold it. A quiet but very nice man, Tony at- tended many club events over the years, had a lot of friends in the club and will be missed. A real gentleman.
