Special Discussion: SLTOA Christmas Party COVID 19 is still in full swing and will be with us till an effective vaccine is rolled out to the world. This is not going to happen until 2021. So until then our only defense is social distancing. Our Christmas Party is not a “social distance” event. Please bring your thoughts and ideas regarding cancellation or alternative events to our monthly meeting. If you have some thoughts but aren’t able to attend our meeting send me an email at [email protected]. —Creig Houghtaling, Events Chairman

Rolling SweatFest—18 Jul 2020

As summarized to the left, the St Louis Triumph Owner’s Association second drive of this “situation ab- normal” season proved a smashing success, with excellent turnout of participants and cars and great weather (okay, okay, it is summer and things were a tad hot ‘n humid). Still, in and around masking and social distancing requirements at the start and finish, a great time was had by all. Our thanks to events chairman/route designer Creig Houghtaling for putting together a truly outstanding drive. Watch for announcements concerning future driving events.

Hi All - I wanted to thank the club and its members now that the dust has settled and I am back in Saudi. The last few months have been really tough. The Triumph club was there to support at a really hard time. I received many calls asking if I needed anything. I truly appreciate everything that was offered. My dad loved the club and I am sure he was honored to have everyone turn out for his funeral. I know my family and I were very touched. The recent article in the newsletter was great. It really captured who my dad was. He was a car guy, mechanic, engineer, dad and teacher. For myself. I am taking a break for a while. Going to focus on family, health and work. Walking away from everything else (some of my hobbies and social media) to take some time to grieve. I will be back around in a few months. - Andy Stark

2020 Kastner Cup

As a follow-up to last month, the 2020 Kastner Cup trophy race and awards ceremony for Triumph drivers/cars took place at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course, Lexington, over 26- 28 June. This year’s event occurred in association with the track’s Vintage Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio, sponsored by the Sports Car Vintage Racing Association. This year, Kas Kastner monitored the proceedings from his home in Summerlin, west side of Las Vegas. A large number of cars took the track on Sunday for the main event, which culminated in a multi-lap, turn-by-turn battle between four drivers; Sam Halkias, TR6; Mike Munson, TR6; Joe Huffaker Jr, TR7; and Jason Sukey, GT6. Munson took the flag and then Kas and his “staff” made the determination on the overall Cup winner, based on Kas’ three points: 1. 50% for the competitive results on the race track (not necessarily the winner) 2. 25% for the presentation of the car 3. 25% for the attitude and interest in vintage racing. Kas’s selection as the recipient of this 2020 Kastner Cup? Mike Munson. Friends of Triumph’s Joe Alexander made the presen- tation. Our thanks to Darren Dwayne Frazier and to North American Triumphs for the photos. Soon as we know where the 2021 event will take place, we’ll get the word out.

In 1948, the company started fabricating alloy bodies for race cars, in and around offering vehicle repair services. In 1959, Rochdale produced it first fiberglass body car, a 2+2 coupe. The Olympic Coupe came out a year later and re- mained in production through 1973. The cars were initially offered with a twin-carb version of the 1.5L BMC B-series engine, front suspension from a and a live rear axle on coils. Other engines were avail- able to fit the purchaser’s wishes OR, the prospective owner could buy the Olympic as a kit and fit his own running gear. Production was suspended in 1961 following a factory fire; it didn't resume until 1963. The second series cars came with a Ford 1.5L 116E four, front suspension from a Triumph (aha! A connection!) and BMC axle and coil springs at the back end. In the end, Rochdale built 250 of the original Olympics, fol- lowed by 150 of the second series cars. Production effectively ended in 1967 and the company went out of business in 1973. This example was available as a rolling in Gil- bertville, Massachusetts, for $1200. Whoever wound up with the car had to install an interior, engine, transmission, electri- cals, etc (hmmm...wonder if a Spitfire 1500 would fit in the engine bay?). The End of an Era Welcome New Member!

Many of you already know, but I thought it prudent to inform the Scott Pervines club that John Mangles will be closing All-British Car Repair and retiring at the end of this month. 1958 TR3A I have known John for about 33 years and remember when there were still a bunch of Toyotas from Seeger getting repaired for resale at his shop. He has been one of the pillars supporting the MG community in our area for the past three decades. I wish him well in his new endeavors as he retires and hope that he is able to stay active with the Club. - John Perkins Editor, Metro Gazette MG Club of St Louis

Musings (Continued from page 4)

It is that knowledge of Triumph automobiles and the comrade- ship of our club members that keeps me engaged and coming back to drives and meetings. There is encouragement in shared experiences. Whether we have our monthly meetings in a restaurant , on Zoom, or in a park, the effect is to have our portion of that experience. What are your reasons for (or not) attending the meetings? I would be interested to know. Should there be more “Tech Talks”? Maybe you like more drives and less talk? Whatever your reasons for attending meetings, thank you for being there. Let’s continue to encour- age our fellow members to participate in these enriching events.
