If you have, you probably already know that it’s wonderful. Okay, I’m repeating myself. What you might not know is that Andrej has been a very busy Triumph owner and also has added a Forum for Club Members Only. There are four (4) topics to choose, write in and answer back. The 4 topics are 1) Mechanical Repair, Maintenance & Restoration 2) Electrical (Mr. Ed will like that one) 3) Body, Trim and Accessories and 4) For Sale or Wanted. You’ll have to create an account but it will cost you zip, nada, niente, null, nieto, nichts, nichego, not one wooden nickel. Got something to share, go for it. It’s our Forum and there are many of us who see each other rarely face to face. Most of have been there, done that. Now it’s time to demonstrate it. Don’t be shy, give it a try. http://www.rockymountaintr.org/forum/ Kudos go to Andrej Galins for working so hard to make our club such a great website.

What do Factory Shutdowns (aka Union Strikes) Produce? Well, limited number of cars of course. According to my sources across the Pond regarding TR6’s, Strikes reduced production to only 113 cars in Sept 1969 and again only 167 cars in Nov. 1969. Normally around 800 units of TR6’s were produced. 1973 was riddled with strikes and caused 8 weeks of lost production. Now, ladies and gentlemen, check your lucky numbers: Between mid-Sept and mid- October 1970 only 4, that’s right 4, TR6’s were produced. So, check your car’s BMHT birth certificate and you could very well be the owner of a very rare production car.

The Triumph Herald Nov 2013 , page 3 www.rockymountaintr.org Editor’s Exhaust by Patrick Huckels The Government shut-down became real to me when we passed so many ‘Park Closed’ signs during the Fall colors trip with the Reed’s. Reagan’s sacking of all the striking Air Traffic Controllers in 1981 came to mind when they tried to hold American airspace hostage. Maybe it’s time to build Washington a new sandbox to play in. My many thanks for this month’s contributions go to: Ralph Malweska & Bud Rolofson–VTR/Triumphest Photos Gordon Kenny-Reed Breakfast Photos John Allen- Cheers Beer Philosophy Sharon Robinson-Picture of the month Rick & Valerie Emmelhainz-For sharing their story with us all. Ask Mr. Ed(itor) The Case of the Engine Shut-Down Wilbur: So Ed, what do you think about all this government shutdown stuff? Ed: Well Wilbur, you know I’m not a political animal but what you might not know is that my twice removed cousin on my mother’s brother’s side, Jack, is symbol of the Democratic Party. He was named after Andrew ‘Jack’son. I was thinking the other day how this shut-down might be related to Triumph cars. They made PI and carburetted cars, left and right hand versions but don’t think they had a Republican and Democratic model. But then again, I’m sure that the ladies of the company had plenty of Tea Parties. Ed: Hay Wilbur, did you know that the Zenith-Stromberg carburetor was co-developed by a Standard- Triumph engineer by the name of Denis Barbet in order to compete with SU (Skinner Union) carbs? Wilbur: No I didn’t Ed. And Hay is for horses Ed. Ed: Then it hit me like one of Jack’s wild kicks to my shin-While nearing retirement at Lucas in 1972 we were asked to join with the Zenith team to develop a way to help prevent what is known as dieseling (Run-On) after the engine’s ignition switch is turned off, usually caused by lower octane fuel. What we came up with is now known as the Anti Run-On Valve which ironically has the pseudonym of ‘Engine Shut-Down Valve’. Wilbur: Gee Ed, how does it work? Ed: First of all I am not related to G ‘Ed’gar Hoover so please just call me Ed. Secondly, how much do you know about the Zenith-Stromberg carburetor and the 3 components of combustion Wilbur? Wilbur: All I know is since the Zenith carburetor was created in England, it’s constantly depressed (CD) about their weather. And you need fuel, oxygen and a spark to start a fire. Or forget to buy you carrots. Ed: Pretty good for a human Wilbur. The English use the word depression and we Yanks use the word vacuum. Actually only the upper portion of the carb is constantly depressed. The lower, or float, section is ecstatically happy at atmospheric pressure. Fuel from the float can only be drawn into the carburetor at this outdoor pressure. Since our ignition switch stops the ignition source (spark) the team thought, ‘what if we introduced a depression into the float chamber?’ Well then everyone would be depressed and we would have our fuel deprivation effect. The engine’s combustion would have to go on furlough. So we connected the float chamber to the intake manifold (where depression calls home) via the Anti Run-On electric valve using a couple of wires and the rest is history. Wilbur: So whose idea was it to connect the wiring using the oil pressure switch to the Engine Shut-Down valve? Ed: Have you been reading my personal wiring diagrams again Wilbur? Well it turns out that our supplier of oil pressure switches had one with an extra terminal on the shelf, so we decided to put it good use. As Aesop would tell his son, the Moral of the story is although your car has an oil pressure gauge, the oil pressure switch can be either your BFF or One Big Fee-Fi-Ffoe and fum (BFFF&F).

Liz & Brad Reed’s Annual Breakfast and Fall Colors Drive by Liz Reed On a beautiful Sunday morning, 8 Triumphs and several “other” cars made the trip to the Reeds’ 20th annual breakfast at their home in Littleton. As usual, everyone brought scrumptious breakfast food that was enjoyed by all. After lingering over eggs, pastries and coffee, Brad let the group on a drive through the foothills of Jefferson County. The group stopped at one point for a photo shoot, trying to get some of the fall colors in the background. After winding around the county roads through Indian Hills, we missed the turn to head up to North Turkey Creek. With that said, a couple of our members needed gas, so we all said goodbye and headed down Highway 285 back into Denver. Another successful RMTC event!

The Triumph Herald Nov 2013 , page 5 www.rockymountaintr.org Car & Drivers of the Month by Rick & Valerie Emmelhainz Valerie and I are excited about our new membership in the Rocky Mountain Triumph Club! After meeting so many of you at the Conclave, I can see that this is a great friendly gathering of like-minded car people who like to have fun together! Valerie and I, while not natives, have been in Colorado for almost forty years having met while we were both in college at the University of Denver. Valerie grew up in Flushing, New York while I was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. We raised our family in Colorado knowing that this area would provide them with great clean living options and a wide beautiful vista of mountains to enjoy. Highlands Ranch has been our home for two decades, but that will change next year as we plan on moving to our “next phase” home somewhere in the south end of town. Valerie works for Tracom, a company that develops and markets products which help businesses better understand the social style of their workers and clients. This is done worldwide, so on any given day, Valerie is speaking with people from Australia or China. Her job is to provide customer service to the independent trainers who present the various programs they have developed. Oh yeah, in addition she is a fantastic chef and trip planner! I have my own company, Partner Purchasing Group, which I’ve owned and run for almost two decades. We have multiple websites which provide products for specific vertical markets. Our most prominent site is ChurchPartner which sells everything from church supplies to furniture at discounted prices in the U.S. and around the world. My business is located in Littleton. We have three children, all grown (mostly). Dan, our oldest, turned 30 this year is married and owns and manages a Budget Car and Truck Rental agency here in town. His wife Keira manages a Starbucks. They reside with their dog Max and three cats in Centennial. Chelsey is 27 and was married a month ago to a wonderful man, Matt. They graduated a few years ago from Metro both receiving English degrees. While normally these are not highly marketable degrees, both were successful in landing jobs in their field in no less of a place than New York City. Chelsey is an assistant editor at Harper Collins Publishing House. Matt is a copywriter for Macy’s writing for their perfume division. If you see an ad in the paper for perfume from Macy’s chances are he wrote it! Erica is our youngest at 23. She graduated last year from McDaniel College in Maryland with degrees in Psychology and Sociology. She currently resides with us, though she wishes otherwise. On her birthday last May, while planning her party, she and a friend came back to find their house completely engulfed in flames. They lost pretty much everything, but were safe. She’s currently working for her brother and as a bartender at the Alamo Drafthouse. Briefly, my love of all things automotive was with me at birth, I think. I could identify makes of cars when I was five, so I am told. Couldn’t tell the difference today if I wanted to! I’ve probably had 15 different “project” cars over my adult years, everything from my first love a ’67 Barracuda to my current Spitfire. In between was mostly Detriot iron from Buicks, Cadillacs, Olds, and Pontiacs to Dodges. I threw in a few ‘foreign’ cars for good measure including a Jaguar and Mercedes and of course my current beauty. Some cars were just for polishing purposes – I’m a polisher, others were full blown projects like the Spitfire. The Spitfire started out a few years ago as just a fun drive, but after a couple of mechanical issues, I decided to take it on as a frame-off restoration. Overall, it took three years from teardown to reassembly mostly in my garage. Continued on next page.

I did most of the work myself including the paint and upholstery, but turned the transmission and rear end rebuild as well as the final tweaking over to Craftsmen, specifically Ted who did a wonderful job. The car was completed in time to make an appearance at Chelsey’s wedding and a surprise showing at the Conclave where it received first place in its group. Thanks to all of you who voted for it! We now look forward to driving it as much as possible before the snow flies and to hear about your families and stories! Thanks again to all of you for your kind greetings and inclusion in RMTC! Rick and Valerie Emmelhainz Beer, the Brain and the Buffalo by Cliff Clavin Pic of the Month

“Well you see Norm, it’s like this… A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it’s the slowest and weakest buffalo at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brains cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, the regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.”

30th Annual Colorado Conclave

The Triumph Herald Nov 2013 , page 8 www.rockymountaintr.org Board Meeting Notes October 7 at Blue Bonnet Cafe by Patrick Huckels Those present: Frank & Jean Oakley, Bob Mott, Sharon Robinson, Marietta & Terry Hughes, Patrick Huckels Action Items pending action are marked with a * Meeting started at 7 pm. Upcoming elections and how to get people to volunteer to run for positions. Several ideas where presented related to this topic. Some where Approaching new members to hold board positions as many members have already held a board position over the club’s 30 year span. Possibility of Board members not required to pay dues during their term(s) in office Possibility of Board meeting dinners paid for by club Co-Sharing of positions Board members to hold meetings at their home on rotational basis. This would include providing dinner for the board meeting. Reduce number of board meetings to every-other month *Of all these ideas presented, the one found most favorable was the co-sharing option. This idea is to be pre- sented to club members at the next general meeting. Webmaster to remain as volunteer position. Possible new volunteer position: Club photographer 30th Colorado Conclave An estimated 380 vehicles participated in the show this year. Attendance was down from the usual 500 possibly due to the postponement of the venue. *Frank to inquire about the show packages for those that paid but did not attend. Regalia sales at Conclave: $108.50 Raffle ticket sales at Conclave: $69.00 How to raise funds for the club. With the latest newsletter being available on the club’s website, how can the club continue to gain income and control over membership and related fees? *Frank to ask Andrej if it is possible to post only the first 2 pages of the current newsletter and having the full newsletter available 2 months after its initial issue. Paying club members would receive access to the entire current newsletter either in paper or website based formats. Browsers of our website would only be able to see/read/download the first 2 pages. Another idea was to have a club sponsored garage sale. Regalia & raffle purchases and sales to continue. Raffle ticket price to change to $1.00 each starting January 1, 2014. Pre-Paid gift cards available at some establishments. Club would receive a certain $ amount for each card sold and recharged. *Raising money via increased advertising in the newsletter. The cost of additional pages to be printed vs. ad income to be studied by Patrick & Andrej. Non-member want ads continue to bring in a small amount ($5) charge each month. Changing the yearly Banquet date to sometime in February or March The board addressed that some people feel that having the Christmas party and Banquet only one month apart caused them to choose to attend one event but not both. It was decided to place an opinion poll in the upcoming newsletter for members to voice their views if the Banquet would be held in January (status quo) or possibly in February or March. *Patrick to add this item onto the officer election ballet. Installation of new or incumbent officers would be held in the January general meeting. Christmas Party location Christmas party date is December 14th. It was suggested that the Christmas Party this year be held at a club member’s home instead at a clubhouse in order to save funds for the club. *Frank and Sharon have volunteered their homes for the event as well as Ken & Vicki Kalin. Final location TBD. Board members decided not to offer a club purchased gift at this year’s Christmas party. Gifts for the exchange are as before: $15-20 range. Board Meeting in General Board members discussed several ideas of how to be more frugal with time spent on meetings. Ideas proposed were Having board meetings every-other month. Having the board meeting prior to the general meeting (on the same night) No resolution was reached during this board meeting. Meeting adjourned at about 9 pm

2013 VTR/Triumphest San Rafael, CA by Ralph Malewska

My brother Dale flew in from Michigan to join me on the trip to the 2013 VTR convention in San Rafael, California. Naturally, we tried to pack everything we own plus spare parts, oil, antifreeze, tools, jumper cables and heavy jackets. Unfortunately, we didn't have an SUV. We just had my TR6 and it was full! Although Dale is my younger brother, he still qualifies as an old fart, so we made lots of pit stops moving West. Wow, we did 500 miles the first day! Open door, fall out onto the parking lot! Even my bones hurt! While traveling across Utah on I 80, we stopped at the Bonneville Salt Flats. My hat blew off as soon as I exited the car and is still blowing across the salt flats! Travel through Nevada is a thrill! Lots of nothing. We got caught between fuel stops with the gas gauge on empty an 25 miles to the next station. I thought the tank was only 12 gallons, so we were really sweating it! Turns out the tank is 13 1/2 gallons. It took 12 1/2 gallons to fill it. We stopped late in Truckee, California and got the only room left in town with the bath-room down the hall, at an exorbitant rate. The VTR in San Rafael was great! The host club, Triumph Travelers Sports Car Club, were the nicest people and did a great jobin arranging all of the events. The auto cross was a blast! It was my first time not knocking down a bunch of cones or running off course. New to the VTR was the timed Le Mans start. You must start about 50 feet away with key in hand-run to your car-start it and accelerate to the end of the run. Best time wins! The first contestant ran and jumped over the door on his TR3. Unfortunately, he landed on the gear shift lever. I think I can still hear him screaming. We were privileged to be judges, along with Bob Grover from Steamboat Springs, in the Concours car show at the Marin Yacht Club. So many absolutely great cars! The participant car show included a collection of 6 Mayflowers owned by a local club member. One was converted to an all electric car with a 25 mile range. It is his daily driver. He has a plug in at work to recharge for the drive home! There was a beautiful Triumph Italia on display as part of the total 250 cars registered. Not much in the way of prewar Triumphs, however. The Friday and Saturday night welcome and banquet were great. We had a chance to talk with Moss Motors Chairman, Robert Goldman and Editor of Moss Motoring Magazine, David Stuursma. Nice people! Lots of laughs and stories. Next years VTR will be held in North Carolina by the home club of Jack McGahey, now running for President of the VTR. A new event for the 2014 VTR will be a hill climb! The State of Nevada has a great sense of humor when it comes to "rest stops" on U S Highway 50. Description: a strip of asphalt 15 feet from the highway, no building, no toilets, no portable toilets! Not even a sign to hide behind! But, you do get to wave at the passing traffic! Congrads to Bud for his terrific Le Mans Start and Auto Cross times.
