If you have, you probably already know that it’s wonderful. Okay, I’m repeating myself. What you might not know is that Andrej has been a very busy Triumph owner and also has added a Forum for Club Members Only. There are four (4) topics to choose, write in and answer back. The 4 topics are 1) Mechanical Repair, Maintenance & Restoration 2) Electrical (Mr. Ed will like that one) 3) Body, Trim and Accessories and 4) For Sale or Wanted. You’ll have to create an account but it will cost you zip, nada, niente, null, nieto, nichts, nichego, not one wooden nickel. Got something to share, go for it. It’s our Forum and there are many of us who see each other rarely face to face. Most of have been there, done that. Now it’s time to demonstrate it. Don’t be shy, give it a try. http://www.rockymountaintr.org/forum/ Kudos go to Andrej Galins for working so hard to make our club such a great website. What do Factory Shutdowns (aka Union Strikes) Produce? Well, limited number of cars of course. According to my sources across the Pond regarding TR6’s, Strikes reduced production to only 113 cars in Sept 1969 and again only 167 cars in Nov. 1969. Normally around 800 units of TR6’s were produced. 1973 was riddled with strikes and caused 8 weeks of lost production. Now, ladies and gentlemen, check your lucky numbers: Between mid-Sept and mid- October 1970 only 4, that’s right 4, TR6’s were produced. So, check your car’s BMHT birth certificate and you could very well be the owner of a very rare production car. Reagan’s sacking of all the striking Air Traffic Controllers in 1981 came to mind when they tried to hold American airspace hostage. Maybe it’s time to build Washington a new sandbox to play in. Ask Mr. Ed(itor) The Case of the Engine Shut-Down Wilbur: So Ed, what do you think about all this government shutdown stuff? Ed: Well Wilbur, you know I’m not a political animal but what you might not know is that my twice removed cousin on my mother’s brother’s side, Jack, is symbol of the Democratic Party. He was named after Andrew ‘Jack’son. I was thinking the other day how this shut-down might be related to Triumph cars. They made PI and carburetted cars, left and right hand versions but don’t think they had a Republican and Democratic model. But then again, I’m sure that the ladies of the company had plenty of Tea Parties. Ed: Hay Wilbur, did you know that the Zenith-Stromberg carburetor was co-developed by a Standard- Triumph engineer by the name of Denis Barbet in order to compete with SU (Skinner Union) carbs? Wilbur: No I didn’t Ed. And Hay is for horses Ed. Ed: Then it hit me like one of Jack’s wild kicks to my shin-While nearing retirement at Lucas in 1972 we were asked to join with the Zenith team to develop a way to help prevent what is known as dieseling (Run-On) after the engine’s ignition switch is turned off, usually caused by lower octane fuel. What we came up with is now known as the Anti Run-On Valve which ironically has the pseudonym of ‘Engine Shut-Down Valve’. Wilbur: Gee Ed, how does it work? Ed: First of all I am not related to G ‘Ed’gar Hoover so please just call me Ed. Secondly, how much do you know about the Zenith-Stromberg carburetor and the 3 components of combustion Wilbur? Wilbur: All I know is since the Zenith carburetor was created in England, it’s constantly depressed (CD) about their weather. And you need fuel, oxygen and a spark to start a fire. Or forget to buy you carrots. Ed: Pretty good for a human Wilbur. The English use the word depression and we Yanks use the word vacuum. Actually only the upper portion of the carb is constantly depressed. The lower, or float, section is ecstatically happy at atmospheric pressure. Fuel from the float can only be drawn into the carburetor at this outdoor pressure. Since our ignition switch stops the ignition source (spark) the team thought, ‘what if we introduced a depression into the float chamber?’ Well then everyone would be depressed and we would have our fuel deprivation effect. The engine’s combustion would have to go on furlough. So we connected the float chamber to the intake manifold (where depression calls home) via the Anti Run-On electric valve using a couple of wires and the rest is history.
