The Triumph Italia had its origins in Napoli (Italy — not to be confused with Naples, Florida), and was conceived by Salvatore Ruffino, managing director of CESAC, the importer of Standard-Triumph vehicles for all of Italy. It seemed that the TR2–TR3 mechanicals had wide appeal to a number of prospective builders of limited production The old TR4 had crapped out on the way cars (star-crossed for the most part, I must home from Palo Alto one day in 1984, say). Splish, Splash, What A Gas!

While June 21st may be the official first day of summer on everyone’s calendars, the true spirit of the season, some might argue, kicked off on Saturday, June 23rd, at the Truimph Club pool party, hosted by Mike, Rebecca and Aubrey Long at their home in North Scottsdale. Sizzling temps of 115 degrees did little to deter this feisty group of roadsters from hitting the hot tar to make the event. All in all, a total of fifty-six heads were counted. But don’t hold us to that as a firm number. There were so many heads bobbing around in the pool that it wasn’t an easy count to make, and we may have missed one or two. Thanks to everyone’s contributions, our kitchen floor was brimming with coolers jam packed with icy drinks, and the mix of dishes brought by all made for a plethora of delightful summer salads, sandwiches and desserts. By the time the party ended it was safe to say that summer had officially made a splash!! It was “SWOOPY”, had no top, low cut doors and was low to the ground with wire wheels. There were only two seats with a flat pad in back for a rear seat.

The fellow who owned it came out and introduced himself as Don Cronk a youth leader. The car was a Triumph TR 3, made in England.

He had to leave and when he started it up it sounded different than any other car that I had ever heard. Healthy exhaust, a little loud and when he drove away, it sounded really cool at their response, but I was a secret, closet and powerful. sports car lover from that day on.
