The preparation of the commen- tary was for many reasons an exceptionally advantageous experience, and one of the most challenging problems that emerged at that time was the question: how was the Romans’ attitude towards cruelty?; how to understand their ap- parent fascination with it? Was it only a terrifying (for us) allure with mayhem, carnage and blood? Should one take it as a macabre grand-guignol entertain- ment, aimed at enjoying (by presenting the scenes of terror) the voracious populus Romanus and bloodthirsty plebs Romana, and consequently arranged by the magistrates, politicians or nobles as a tool by which the editores gained popularity and wielded power or control – both in the urbs aeterna as in other municipal cities? Or, could we ever hope to come nearer to the understanding of the cruel practices by expressing our moral judgment: disgust, detestation and rejection, as did openly Michael Grant in his Gladiators?3 How far should historians proceed in their investigations to avoid the risk of falling into an open moralizing? The more questions, the more doubts and uncertainties. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Royal Holloway - Pure Socratic Themes in the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius JOHN SELLARS ABSTRACT: Although Marcus Aurelius refers to Socrates only a handful of times in the Meditations, and often only to name him as an example of an illustrious figure now long dead, this chapter argues that there is a distinctive Socratic character to the philosophical project that we see at work in Marcus’s notebook writings. In those few places where Marcus does invoke Socrates it is usually in connection with one of the central preoccupations of the Meditations, in particular the notion of taking care of oneself, the primacy of virtue, and the need for self- control. Moreover, Marcus’ practice of writing to himself may also be seen as a Socratic enterprise, when approached in the light of a suggestive passage from Epictetus. This chapter i) examines Marcus’s knowledge of Socrates and the sources he used, and ii) explores the Socratic themes in the Meditations noted above. Although Marcus does not explicitly say much about Socrates, I suggest that he probably considered the Meditations to embody a deeply Socratic project. 1. Introduction Marcus Aurelius mentions Socrates a dozen or so times in the Meditations.1 To these explicit references we can add a few quotations from the Socrates of Plato’s dialogues where he is not named.2 Of these few scattered references to Socrates, some merely name him in a list of illustrious people who are now dead: Heraclitus, after many speculations about fire which should consume the Universe, was waterlogged by dropsy, poulticed himself with cow-dung and died. -

Introduction Sources prove that the rose was unknown to the inhabitants of the Italian peninsula from the beginning of the first millennium BC all the way to the third century BC, and the Latin name of the plant itself derives from the Greek name. The plant and its everyday and symbolic use appeared as a result of cultural contact, a gift, as it were, of Greek civilization. It appears certain that the plant came to the peninsula not as a result of direct selection, but rather in the company of other cultural items, and in time it became increasingly valued both from a cultic/sacred point of view as well as in terms of hygiene, medicine and nutrition. Considerable material evidence indicates the decline of the old Central Italian heritage and the rise of the Hellenic influence. Contemporary Greek manners of expression, the use of garlands and floral strings as decoration, and the appearance of rosettes in floral motifs all entered layers of Roman society with more open attitudes. The Sarcophagus of Cornelius Scipio Barbatus (3rd century BC, Vatican Museum, Rome) is one of the earliest examples of this mixing of traditions. In contrast to the general custom of burial by cremation, the Scipios placed their deceased in coffins, as did the Etruscans, but in place of the Etruscan bed- or house-shaped sarcophagus they undertook an imitation of a Greek altar. Decorated with elements of Doric and Ionian architecture, the Sarcophagus of Cornelius Scipio Barbatus includes a row of rosettes with single and double layers of petals, some of which contain outward-stretching cupped leaves among the petals. -

Homoerotics in the Correspondence of Marcus Aurelius and Fronto
Imperial Love Letters?: Homoerotics in the Correspondence of Marcus Aurelius and Fronto Marcus Cornelius Fronto has been, and still remains, a bit of an enigma. Although famous as an orator and as the imperial tutor of the Antonine dynasty, Fronto was not been a topic of much research in 20th century classical scholarship. However, in the new millennium, scholarship on Fronto has begun to recognize his letters to Lucius Verus and Marcus Aurelius as valuable both in terms of the primary sources they provide the social historian and in the literary artistry they employ. Moreover, the relationship between Fronto and Marcus has been of particular interest to scholars, as their relationship is often painted as amorous throughout the corpus. Scholarship on the relationship has tended to take one of two approaches to it. One branch, perhaps best exemplified by Richlin 2006, delineates a potential arc of the relationship and argues for the strong possibility of homoerotic dimensions. Another branch, including Laes (2009), downplays much of the potential eroticism, explaining the intimacy displayed as part of the long-standing tradition of amicitia in Roman epistolography. A perfect example of the complexities of this relationship can be seen in a pair of letters between the two men: ad M. Caesarem 4.1 and 4.2. Throughout these letters a clear homoerotic dimension can be detected, as well as a yearning by Marcus for an opportunity to act on his emotions, an opportunity that seemingly is denied to him. In 4.1, Fronto writes a letter of effusive praise to Marcus, in which he extols the virtus of the young man, comparing his masculinity to that of Orpheus, who was famous in antiquity for his non-normative sexuality. -

Williams This thesis is a historical biography of Marcus Porcius Cato based on the accounts of ancient authors, particularly Plutarch and Livy, and on the fragments of Cato's speeches which are still extant. Attention has also been given to the interpretations of modern authors. AS a young man, Marcus Porcius Cato began his political career at the urging of a wealthy patrician neighbor, Lucius Valerius Flaccus, a member of the Fabian party. Allying himself with the Fabians to gain the political support which his family lacked, Cato rapidly held the succession of magistracies in the cursus honorum, culminating in the consulship in 195 B. C. which he shared with Flaccus. Cato had already developed the conservative outlook which would characterize him in later years, although it was not so static nor so strongly anti-Greek as Plutarch would have us believe. As praetor in Sardinia, Cato reduced the oppression of usurers and lived a frugal life in order to reduce the burden to the state and to provide an example to the provincials. In the beginning of his consulship, Cato stoutly, although unsuccessfully, Opposed the repeal of the sumptuary Oppian Law.
