Introduction Sources prove that the rose was unknown to the inhabitants of the Italian peninsula from the beginning of the first millennium BC all the way to the third century BC, and the Latin name of the plant itself derives from the Greek name. The plant and its everyday and symbolic use appeared as a result of cultural contact, a gift, as it were, of Greek civilization. It appears certain that the plant came to the peninsula not as a result of direct selection, but rather in the company of other cultural items, and in time it became increasingly valued both from a cultic/sacred point of view as well as in terms of hygiene, medicine and nutrition. Considerable material evidence indicates the decline of the old Central Italian heritage and the rise of the Hellenic influence. Contemporary Greek manners of expression, the use of garlands and floral strings as decoration, and the appearance of rosettes in floral motifs all entered layers of Roman society with more open attitudes. The Sarcophagus of Cornelius Scipio Barbatus (3rd century BC, Vatican Museum, Rome) is one of the earliest examples of this mixing of traditions. In contrast to the general custom of burial by cremation, the Scipios placed their deceased in coffins, as did the Etruscans, but in place of the Etruscan bed- or house-shaped sarcophagus they undertook an imitation of a Greek altar. Decorated with elements of Doric and Ionian architecture, the Sarcophagus of Cornelius Scipio Barbatus includes a row of rosettes with single and double layers of petals, some of which contain outward-stretching cupped leaves among the petals. -
The Archaeology of the Roman Diet
The Archaeology of the Roman Diet Food Remains from Pompeii (Archivi dell’Arte/Luciano Pedicini 2018) The Honorable Lady Fina MacGrioghair AS LIV Introduction There has been a long-held belief that the average Roman citizen subsisted on a vegetarian diet of cereals, olive oil, and wine while the more affluent dined on a wide variety of extravagant delicacies. However, recent archaeological excavations in the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum are shedding new light on the diet and eating habits of citizens living in the heart of the Empire. The work being done in these two cities is demonstrating that early notions regarding the Roman diet may not be accurate. Most of the time when looking at ancient cultures, it is an examination of the records of dead communities, abandoned for a long time before they were preserved. However, due to the nature of the disaster and the catastrophe that happened in 79 CE, Pompeii and Herculaneum allow the possibility to capture a snapshot of a living community. This gives a unique opportunity to examine some things about a living community that may reveal new insights into the Roman diet. It may only apply to this specific region, but it’s still a snapshot that didn’t exist before. By examining new data from excavations and analysis of skeletal remains, this may expand the understanding beyond the traditional view of the Roman diet. Careful reading will reveal that most people have the idea that the poorest Romans ate badly or even “like animals” (as in the March 2013 livescience.com article by Stephanie Pappas states) while the rich dined lavishly on best and most exotic things (e.g. -

Th e attribution faces a number of diffi culties, such as the authorship and dating of the corpus ascribed to Apicius and the fact that the cognomen Fronto did not belong to one particular nomen gentilicium. Th e author considers several Frontones: the addressee of Martial’s epigram (I, 55, 2), a rich patron mentioned in Juvenal’s satire (1, 12), and a person who wrote on agriculture and was a contemporary of the emperor Septimius Severus. A special section is dedicated to M. Cornelius, the teacher of Marcus Aurelius and the most famous among Frontones. Th e article studies both external evidence and the internal logic of the correspondence of M Cornelius Fronto in order to fi nd out his attitude to food and to consider the possibility that the dish was named aft er him. Th e author concludes that there are no compelling arguments to attribute pullus Frontonianus with certainty to any of the Frontones discussed. Keywords: M.
