Why Siblings are Good for You

You...yeah, you! Do you have a sibling? If so, you are in luck! A sibling is one of the best people to have in your life. Even though they can be annoying, having a sibling brings many great benefits. First, siblings help you become more selfless. Next, they improve your mental health. Finally, they help you live a longer, happier life. First, siblings improve your selflessness. Having a sibling helps you show feelings towards others. It provides you the need to support and protect your family. Even though siblings can sometimes be really annoying, research states people actually want to have them around, and an even bigger surprise is they like them! Studies show that people that have a sibling have better selflessness than a person that doesn’t. Meaning, they are willing to take care of others before themselves. My brother is selfless, and he shows this by being really nice towards me and others. Next, siblings improve your mental health, especially sisters. If you have a sister you are lucky. Sisters, specifically, give their siblings a mental boost. Sisters help adolescents feel loved, not alone, fearless, innocent, and not self conscious. Finally, siblings help us live a longer, happier life. Sibling bonds have strong effects in later life. Elderly adults who have living siblings have a higher sense of morale and confidence. They are happier when they have siblings to comfort them. According to PLoS Medicine, people who have a strong social connection with a sibling are more likely to live seven and a half years longer than people who don’t. That’s about the difference between smokers and nonsmokers! Siblings inspire us to take better care of ourselves; they help us live healthier, longer lives. Believe it or not, you’ve hit the jackpot if you have a sibling! The next time you see your sibling, thank them for being alive. Siblings have many great effects on you. They encourage you to become more selfless. They also improve your mental health, and help you live longer, happier lives. 18 The Pearson Post
