Logo Isotta Fraschini

Story of the Alfa Romeo Factory and Plants : Part 1 the Early Portello
Story of the Alfa Romeo factory and plants: Part 1 The early Portello Factory Patrick Italiano Special thanks go to Karl Schnelle, Indianapolis, USA, for his patient proofreading and editing of the English version of this text Over the last few years, we have had to deal with large changes in Alfa Romeo-related places and buildings, as we witnessed the destruction of the old Portello factory, step by step in the late 80s, and also the de-commissioning of the much more modern Arese plant. Sad tales and silly pictures of places and people once full of pride in manufacturing the most spirited cars in the world. As reported by historians, it has long been – and still is for few – a source of pride to belong to this “workers aristocracy” at A.L.F.A.. Places recently destroyed to make place for concrete buildings now containing commercial centres or anonymous offices, places where our beloved cars were once designed, developed and built. It’s often a mix of curiosity and thrill to have the chance to look behind the scenes and see into the sanctuary. Back in 1987, when the first part of Portello was being torn down, Ben Hendricks took us on a visit to the Portello plant in Het Klaverblaadje #40. That was, as Jos Hugense coined the title 15 years later, the “beginning of the end”. Today, one can see Alfas running on the Fiat assembly lines along with Fiat Stilos and at best Lancia Thesis. These Fiat plants are no longer the places where distinguished and passionate brains try to anticipate technical trends five years into the future, thus ensuring that the new generation of Alfas keep such high company standards, as Ing. -

2017 Pebble Beach Concours D'elegance Poster
Event Calendar | Shop Tickets | Visitor's Guide We're excited to unveil the posters for the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, as well as the Tour d'Elegance and RetroAuto. Ferrari celebrates its 70th Anniversary at Pebble Beach this year, so not one but two of our posters feature prancing horses. The third poster focuses on our prewar featured marque, Isotta Fraschini. Below we share the history of the magnificent automobiles that our talented artists have depicted. We thank Barry Rowe & Tim Layzell for their fantastic work. 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance Poster Artist: Barry Rowe Car: 1951 Ferrari 212 Export Touring Barchetta Initial Sketch Poster Art Final Poster The 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance poster, painted by distinguished automotive artist Barry Rowe, portrays a car that is quintessentially Ferrari— offering the best of both road and race capabilities. Illustrated on the poster, a 1951 Ferrari 212 Export Touring Barchetta (chassis 0102 E) graces the competition field early one significant Sunday morning in August. The car’s first owner, Pietro Palmieri, raced it in the Giro Delle Calabrie and the Coppa Adriatica finishing first in class and a 2nd and 4th overall. It was later loaned to and raced by Bobby Baird, leading to another class win at the RAC’s famed Tourist Trophy race in Dundrod, Ireland. The Barchetta is perhaps mostknown for its appearance in the movie “The Racers,” produced by Twentieth CenturyFox in 1955 and starring Kirk Douglas. It is said that the movie’s producer, Henry Hathaway, approached Enzo Ferrari for the loan of some cars for the movie, but Enzo said “no.” Fox studios then approached Phil Hill, who helped to broker the sale of three Ferraris. -

Dutch driver Gerard de Rooy, leader of Team PETRONAS De Rooy Iveco, placed first in the 2016 edition. This is his second victory in the Dakar’s Truck Category. His performance over the rally’s thirteen stages once again demonstrated his experience and skills in both driving and navigation and confirmed the dependability of the Iveco Powerstar to win a race of this magnitude. Argentinian driver Federico Villagra placed third in his Iveco Powerstar. He counted an impressive following of millions of local fans in Argentina, where Iveco is the market leader for commercial vehicles. The Dakar route presented itself as the perfect proving ground to showcase the versatility and strength of Iveco’s trucks.
