During this year, several significant academic and developmental programmes have taken place. New initiatives towards furtherance of excellence, efficiency and equity were undertaken and implemented. Strengthened by its wide, multifaceted and rich academic strength, the University is uniquely set towards Excellence in Sciences, Technology, Social Sciences and Education. As a result of sustained efforts, the University has been ranked high occupied 67th position in NIRF in 2016. The University is committed to the welfare of the people, with a vision of social concern which is manifested in several research thrusts and developmental programmes.The year 2016-17 has witnessed significant progress inTeaching-Learning, Research and Extension Activities. Students’ facilities have been augmented with infrastructural expansion. New Hostels, Laboratories, and upgraded facilities for health care were commissioned during the year. To encourage self-study by the students, a new and well-equipped building has been provided for the Library. As a part of the Teachers’ Day Celebration, the University has instituted the Best Researcher Award for outstanding publications. The Research Capabilities and Credentials of the University are evident through Research Projects from reputed National Agencies (UGC, CSIR, SERB, DST-DBT, ICSSR & ICMR), Editorial Board contributions in International, extramural projects andVisits abroad. The Citation track of the University is also strong to the extent that some faculty have citations above 5000 and some faculty have h-index of 37 and also h index of some individuals has crossed 40. The overall ‘h’ index of the University is 19. The University was recognised by the World Health Organisation to organise the international expert consultation of the WHO on Kala azar elimination. Kala-azar,is a disease affecting poorest of the poor and is targeted for elimination by 2018 from the Indian sub-continent. The Faculty Representation and Contribution in the World Education Summit 2016, Asia-Pacific Programme of Educational Innovation for Development (APEID) Meet at Thailand, Indo- Norwegian collaboration, representation of CUTN individuals in UN meetings as expert member and the International Council for Distance Education (ICDE) Conclavereflect the International cantours of our University during 2016-17. The second convocation of the University was successfully organized on 2nd December 2016. CUTN has also organized a big international event on ‘Vectors & Vector Borne Diseases’ from 27th Feb. to 1st March 2017. The CUTN initiated a campaign in 2017 on “Digital Payments-What,Why and How” in and around Kangalacherry village to canvas for the VISAKA(“Vitta Saksharata Abhiyaan”) Mission to sensitize them on the concept of Digital Economy and Digital Payment System. 1 CENTRAL UNIVERSITY OF TAMIL NADU Ours is the first central university in South India to get the approval from the National Council for Teacher Education for its B.Sc., B.Ed., Four-Year Integrated Programme, thereby implementing the MHRD recommendation to strengthen the base for Science Teachers in this part of our Country. The University has taken its social responsibility seriously and accordingly established an Extension Cell, which organized number of Skill-Development programmes, International Literacy Day Celebrations and Rural Reconstruction Programmes in collaboration with National Council for Rural Institutes, MHRD. An international team consisting of two CUTN Alumni along with an Arizona State University Student won the second prize in the ‘Lab2Moon’ competition hosted by Team Indus, a Bangalore-based space startup sending the spacecraft. It is a matter of pride for CUTN that the spacecraft will host Team ZΩi’s experiment to observe photosynthesis in cyanobacteria on the moon. In order to strengthen the quality of teaching-learning and research, a transparent faculty recruitment drive has been on the move. The Central University of Tamil Nadu filled 62 teaching for various departments. Further, 97 teaching positions are being advertised and are being processed. Process for filling up of all vacant non-teaching positions is in progress. It is encouraging that this nascent University had as many as 14,128 applicants this year, from whom 377 were selected for admission. In terms of the achievements documented in this Annual Report speak volumes about the dedication of our academic staff, the high standard of teaching we offer. The University has started its News Letter and named is as ‘Lapwing’, a bird unique in the CUTN ecosystem. In the years to come, the CUTN proposes to take up several ambitious projects, aimed at obtaining new pinnacles of success in interdisciplinary and collaborative research and studies. It will also play a pivotal role in making available skilled workforce necessary for the success of ambitious programmes of the Government such as Digital India, Skill India, Clean India and most importantly Make in India I thank all faculty members, officers and staff, students and all stake holders of the Universityfor their contributions to the progress of the University. I extend my sincere thanks to the Chairman and Members of the Editorial Committee as well as the associated persons for their untiring efforts in bringing out this Report.
