Linguistics of the Tibeto-Burman Area Volume 34.1 — April 2011 THE LANGUAGES OF MANIPUR: A CASE STUDY OF THE KUKI-CHIN LANGUAGES* Pauthang Haokip Department of Linguistics, Assam University, Silchar Abstract: Manipur is primarily the home of various speakers of Tibeto-Burman languages. Aside from the Tibeto-Burman speakers, there are substantial numbers of Indo-Aryan and Dravidian speakers in different parts of the state who have come here either as traders or as workers. Keeping in view the lack of proper information on the languages of Manipur, this paper presents a brief outline of the languages spoken in the state of Manipur in general and Kuki-Chin languages in particular. The social relationships which different linguistic groups enter into with one another are often political in nature and are seldom based on genetic relationship. Thus, Manipur presents an intriguing area of research in that a researcher can end up making wrong conclusions about the relationships among the various linguistic groups, unless one thoroughly understands which groups of languages are genetically related and distinct from other social or political groupings. To dispel such misconstrued notions which can at times mislead researchers in the study of the languages, this paper provides an insight into the factors linguists must take into consideration before working in Manipur. The data on Kuki-Chin languages are primarily based on my own information as a resident of Churachandpur district, which is further supported by field work conducted in Churachandpur district during the period of 2003-2005 while I was working for the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore, as a research investigator. -

Scholar ================================================================= Abstract Language as a socio-cultural phenomenon has a deep underlying relationship with the society. Correspondingly, the Aimol language is examined in the backdrop of the socio- linguistic ecosystem in which the speakers live, the language is spoken, the context and situation in which it is used. Further, this article also explains the typological features of the language. Ethnography- A Short Historical Sketch The Aimols, recognized as one of the Scheduled Tribes of the Indian Union, inhabit three districts in Manipur. Etymologically the name Aimol corresponds to a past habitat of the people whereby the term is derived from the word, 'Ai' denoting ‗wild turmeric‘, which is found in abundance in the hill 'Mol'. Thus, Aimol owe its name to such historic mark and is thereafter believed to be known as ‗Aimol‘. Among other things, the Aimols trace their origin to Khur, a mythical cave or passage through which all Kuki tribes are said to have emerged from a netherworld. This place is believed to be somewhere in the Southern part of Myanmar bordering China. In fact, some even disagree to this proposition and allege that they must have migrated from the eastern part of China. -

Dr. Wati Longchar, Associate Missionary for Theological Education in East Asia, American Baptist International Ministries The Covid-19 pandemic has left many vulnerable people in the lurch. It has intensified untold miseries to migrant workers, daily wage earners, domestic workers (especially women), elderly, disabled, the destitute, and students. Many poor are starving to death due to an unjust economic system. Racial attack, religious fundamentalism and casteism/tribalism is on the rise. The world is also experiencing an unprecedented climate catastrophe. All these contribute to fear, anxiety, and uncertainty among the people. Instead of nurturing with words of love, compassion and care, people are threatened by misinterpreting the Bible. Prosperity theology is dominating the pulpit and Christian fundamentalism is on the rise. We tend to focus more on the wrath of God, rather than on the love of God. It is said that Covid-19 will stay with us. How do we respond to the post-pandemic? How do we address the humanitarian crisis? What kind of long-term strategies are required to help the marginalized communities? What is the role of church leaders in times of pandemic? All these questions relate to justice concerns. We need to think of Christian witness beyond charitable work and narrow evangelism. It requires long-term planning and engagement. Enhancing the leadership capacity of the church leaders to help vulnerable communities is the need of the hour. The Covid-19 pandemic also challenges us to rethink the one-sided urban development, urban consciousness, and educational system. -

The first Asian Indigenous Women’s Conference was held in Baguio City in the Cordillera region of the Philippines on January 24-30, 1993. The conference brought together 150 women from 13 Asian countries and a few from Europe and the Americas with the bulk of the participants coming from local organizations in the Cordillera. The theme of the conference was “Sharing Commonalities and Diversities, Forging Unity Towards Indigenous Women’s Empowerment”. It had as its general objective “to convene Asian indigenous women to share their various situations, fully understand how global developments impact on them, and collectively define what they can do to address common concerns." The conference gave birth to the Asian Indigenous Women’s Network (AIWN). The participants agreed that this will be a loose network which has the aim of helping organize indigenous women in the region. -

Few speakers living in Tamu township in Myanmar. More than 250 different types of familiar and less-familiar ethnic fermented foods and alcoholic beverages are prepared and consumed by the different ethnic people of North East India, which include milk, vegetable, bamboo, soybean, meat, fish, cereal and alcoholic beverages. Diverse microorganisms ranging from filamentous fungi to enzyme and alcohol producing yeasts, lactic acid bacteria, bacilli and microccoci are associated with fermentation and production of ethnic foods and alcoholic drinks. Ethnic foods are fermented naturally, except the alcoholic beverages which are produced by using consortia of microorganisms in the form of dry, cereal-based starter. Diversity within the species of lactic acid bacteria and bacilli has created the ethnic foods with different sensory characteristics. It has demonstrated that functional microorganisms present in the ethnic fermented foods of North East have many biological functions enhancing the health-promoting benefits, bio-preservation of perishable foods, bio-enrichment of nutritional value, protective properties and therapeutic values. Achievement Report 2013-2014
The Zonal Cultural Centre of the Northeast India, North East Zone Cultural Centre, registered under the Nagaland Societies Registration Act XXI 1860 (Nagaland First Amendment) Act, 1969 was set up in June 1986 with its headquarters at Dimapur, Nagaland. The 8 (eight) North Eastern States, viz; Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura are the constituent States of the North East Zone Cultural Centre. The NEZCC started functioning with the formal inauguration of the Centre by Late Rajiv Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India on 6th October 1987. The NEZCC has also established its Shilpgram (Crafts Village), at Panjabari, Guwahati which was inaugurated by Dr. Manmohan Singh, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India on January 17, 2006. The NEZCC has been established with the following main objective of promoting and preserving the rich cultural heritage of the North East region. Aims and Objectives The main aims and objects of the Centre are as follows : (i) To preserve, innovate and promote the projection and dissemination of arts of the Zone under the broad discipline of Sangeet Natak, Lalit Kala and Sahitya; (ii) To develop and promote the rich diversity and uniqueness of various arts of the Zone and to upgrade and enrich consciousness of the people about their cultural heritage; (iii) To lay special emphasis in its activities on the linkages among various areas through evolution of styles and their contribution to the largest composite identity of cultural heritage of India; (iv) To make special efforts to encourage folk and tribal arts and to frame special programme for preservation including documentation and sustaining of the vanishing art forms; (v) To frame such programmes as would encourage and involve the youth of the Zone amongst themselves and with the youth of the rest of the country in creative cultural communications through the process of seminars, exchanges and workshops on matter relating to cultural heritage of India. -
