Dear David,

I am returning this paper to you again because it still requires substantial revision to meet the assignment requirements and earn a passing grade. Please see my marginal comments for how to revise, as well as focus on the following areas for revision:

 Thesis / Focus: You need to revise your thesis and focus so that you set yourself up to 1) analyze the song’s meaning through its use of literary techniques and 2) argue why this song’s particular meaning is popular and/or show a specific cultural impact from this song (and its meaning). Right now, you actually have no literary / lyric analysis at all. You already have a good, clear statement on what you believe the song means—that it reveals the tension between selfish human nature and human suffering and calls those in power to act to help those who are suffering. So, look back through the lyrics and figure out what literary elements are being used to convey this message. For a reminder of the many literary elements you might find being used in this song, review the presentation at this link on figurative language: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t02yDTeihuA. Once you know which three (or more) literary elements you will analyze, list them in your thesis. For example: “” uses symbolism, repetition, and pathos to convey a gritty and revealing message about…” Finally, make sure the second part or sentence of your thesis indicates the specific reason for popularity or specific cultural impact. The reason for popularity you seem to give in this draft is that the issues to which this song references (poverty, hunger, and homelessness) were huge issues in the 80s and still are today, which is why the song resonates with the public. But you also suggest that there was a specific cultural impact of raising awareness and causing change in these areas. That is a great, specific cultural impact, but you will have to prove it. So, revise your thesis to include all of these specific aspects, in the following order: 1) lit devices; 2) song’s meaning; 3) popularity / cultural impact.  Arrangement: You need to order your paper in the same order as your thesis. In other words, all three (or more) of your paragraphs of literary analysis that prove that the song means what you say it means must be prior to your popularity / cultural impact section. So, an outline for your paper might look something like this:

Intro Body Paragraph 1: Symbolism literary analysis Body Paragraph 2: Repetition literary analysis Body Paragraph 3: Pathos literary analysis 2 David Dawidowicz Student ID: 21993147 Exam #: 50044200 2119 Barley Drive Quakertown, PA 18951 [email protected]

Body Paragraph 4: Popularity Paragraph Body Paragraph 5: Cultural Impact Paragraph (Awareness) Body Paragraph 6: Cultural Impact Paragraph (Actions) Conclusion

 Content: Make sure that your content is very specific and proves your thesis. For instance, in your literary analysis paragraphs, make sure you reference specific lyrics / lines of the song and show how those lyrics prove exactly what you say the song means (as listed in your thesis). For your popularity and cultural impact paragraphs, make sure that you include specific evidence to prove your points. If you say the song is popular because the issues referenced in it were prevalent in the 80s and still are today, include statistics to prove that point. If you say the song raised awareness or caused people to take steps to end homelessness and hunger, then provide examples of specific events / actions taken and how you know they were influenced by the song. Make sure you focus ONLY on analyzing the song’s impact, not the impact of the singer’s actions or other biographical / contextual points. You drift off in the second half of your paper into a research essay on hunger and homelessness; make sure you stay on focus and always tie back to the song. As your previous grader noted, check each body paragraph for its relation back to at least one part / point of your thesis. If there is no direct connection, then the paragraph needs revision.

Again, please review the marginal comments for even more specific feedback. Good luck as you revise, and please contact the school with any questions.

Basest impulses of man are to do for yourself and step on anyone who gets in your way. The Darwinists call that survival of the fittest and then congratulate themselves for coming up with such a logical sounding statement. “Man in the Mirror” is a raw uncut look at self and how selfish actions cause pain, suffering, and death to others. America is one of the nations of the world that has been truly blessed but at the same time it is extremely selfish. The ideas of individualism instead of collectivism reign supreme. “Man in the Mirror” makes the listenering think about his or her actions during the day and if those actions hurt or harmed someone. This song takes away the excuse “I’m only one person what can I do” or “the problem is too big” or “they will handle it”. The proverbial they must become we. We must take a stand by looking at what we are doing such as ignoring, consuming, and making excuses. This song spoke what everyone else was thinking but did not want to say because of embarrassment, discomfort, or disgust. It is time to make a change staring with myself and hopefully my example will influence others. Comment [WU1]: This section should be a brief explanation of why you personally chose Garrett, Siedah. The change begins with a single person and when that person helps to change a life than humanity itself slowly changes. In the poverty-hunger- homelessness were some of the major issues. This is a song that will last the test of time because anyone with a soul can feel compassion for another person. The true test of courage is taking that compassion and putting it into action by helping someone else in need. Comment [WU11]: Okay—so this will be a good starting paragraph for your popularity / Michael Jackson changed the culture with his actions. Love or the misconception of love is one of the last compelling points. The phrase "a victim of a selfish kind of love" is ironic because the well-off and the self-absorbed do not see themselves as victims but as victors in the game of life. They enjoy themselves while Michael is pointing out that they are victims and need to realize the devastating poverty that others endure. Comment [WU14]: This lyric analysis is all too general and does not focus on specific There is a connection between the poverty of the 1980s and today. Research literary elements that are being used. There has not been much movement since then. There were regions outside China that actually experienced an increase in the poverty levels. The wage that people were paid began to fluctuate between the typical $1 a day to $2 a day (Chen & Ravallion 1). Unfortunately the people who lived on $1 a day began to outnumber the people who were living on $2. Comment [WU16]: This is more detail than you need in order to make your point. Extreme poverty has found its home in Sub-Saharan Africa. Extreme poverty could be categorized as those individuals who are making less than $1 a day. It could even be calculated that they make $1 but the timeframe may differ. It could be anywhere 11 David Dawidowicz Student ID: 21993147 Exam #: 50044200 2119 Barley Drive Quakertown, PA 18951 [email protected] from a $1 every few days to a $1 a week. The research estimations showed that if this poverty is not dealt with the numbers previously stated could be reduced by half (Chen &

If that does not work they are convinced that their efforts are too small to make a different and the mysterious “they” should be called upon to fix the problem.

Detaching from the situation and the people who are hurting makes it harder for those who can act to act. Change begins in the heart while it still beats and feels. The daily grind of society or the perception that helping is too difficult can cause it to become callous and cold. The more well-off humanity can connect with hurting humanity the better. Garrett’s song suggests thatI it is time for the well-off to remember the sacrifices made by the poor to help them get elevated. The time for action is now, and society is mandated to think of a plan to help turn the tide of poverty and homelessness.
