Super Regional Championship at Indianapolis November 4-5, 2016 Lucas Oil Stadium Indianapolis, IN Adjudicator Biographies National Presenting Sponsor MUSIC PANEL (alphabetical by last name) Ed Argenziano, Clearwater, FL Edward D. Argenziano, received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Ed. from William Paterson University. Masters of Arts Degree, Music Performance, from Montclair State University. Edward has been a teacher of secondary schools in New Jersey for 30 years and, currently the Fine Arts Department Chairperson & Director of Bands and Orchestras at Clearwater High School. He has also served as the music composition middle college teacher for Fairleigh Dickinson University. Since 1987, Edward has been extremely involved as a music/percussion clinician and music adjudicator and has toured extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Netherlands and Japan. He has been involved with Drum Corps International (DCI) since 1973 as a performer, Percussion Caption Administrator, Percussion Arranger/Show Designer for a handful of corps, and is currently judging Winter Guard International (WGI). Percussion judge, Bands of America (BOA), and DCI. Carl Bly, Winchester, VA Mr. Carl A. Bly taught for 30 years at Centreville High School and Lake Braddock Secondary School in Fairfax County, Va., was the Concert Band and Orchestra Director at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and has taught at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va. Mr. Bly’s bands have earned international reputations and have been finalists at the Bands of America’s (BOA) Grand National Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. His concert bands have performed at the Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, BOA’s National Concert Band Festival, and in the concert halls of the Kennedy Center, DAR Constitution Hall, Wolf Trap for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and the Legrande Theatre in Quebec, Canada. Mr. Bly is also a frequent clinician with both concert and marching bands, and regularly conducts All-District and All-State Events. Levi Chavis, McKinney, TX Levi Chavis is currently the Director of Bands at Rick Reedy High School in Frisco, TX, where the Reedy Wind Ensemble recently placed 6th in the TMEA 4A State Honor Band Contest in their inaugural year. He was most recently the Director of Bands at Ronald Reagan High School in San Antonio from 2009 to 2015 where he oversaw the Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Band. Under his direction, the Ronald Reagan High School Wind Ensemble was twice named a state finalist in the TMEA Honor Band Contest and was also selected to perform at the Music for All National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis. The Ronald Reagan High School Marching Band was a UIL State Marching Band Contest Finalist, a Bands of America (BOA) Regional and Super Regional Finalist every year, a BOA Regional Class Champion in 2010, and a Grand National Championship Finalist in 2012. Mr. Chavis has served on the instructional staffs of The Cavaliers and Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps. He is an active adjudicator nationally for Bands of America (BOA), locally in Texas, IPA (Indiana Percussion Association), and NTCA (North Texas Colorguard Association). Levi resides in McKinney, TX with his wife Amanda and their daughter Sophia. Jay Kennedy, Holliston, MA Mr. S. Jay Kennedy’s career encompasses varied and successful experiences as a composer, arranger, producer, performer, educator, and administrative leader. He is Vice President for Academic Affairs/Vice Provost at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Kennedy received his Ph.D. from Boston College, and Master of Music and Bachelor of Music Education degrees from Northwestern University. Mr. Kennedy has composed, arranged, and produced music for hundreds of television and radio commercials, for which he has received numerous awards. His music has also been heard in feature films, including “Wayne’s World”, “Electric Horseman”, “Fast Break”, and “Lethal Weapon 2”, and in a variety of television series, including “One Tree Hill”, “Judging Amy”, and “Felicity”. A veteran of the recording industry, Mr. Kennedy has written and produced music for Sheryl Crow, Siedah Garrett, James Ingram, Patti Austin, Little Richard, Stanley Clarke, Brenda Russell, Dave Grusin, and Singers Unlimited. Mr. Page 1 of 4 Kennedy was a Grammy Award finalist in 2002 for arrangements on the recording, “Virtuosi”, by Gary Burton and Makoto Ozone. His published compositions include works for concert band, percussion ensemble, and marching band. Mr. Kennedy has been an active adjudicator for marching band, drum corps, and indoor percussion competitions for over 30 years, has written for several drum and bugle corps. He has also composed the themes for the Drum Corps International (DCI) championship broadcasts and DVDs. He was elected to the DCI Hall of Fame in 2007 for longtime contributions as an adjudicator, judge administrator, arranger, and composer. Allan Kristensen, Clovis, CA Allan E. Kristensen is a retired music educator and arts supervisor, currently working part time as an arts consultant with the Fresno County Office of Education. During his career, he was the Visual and Performing Arts Manager for the Fresno Unified School District where he supported the arts in over 100 schools, aligning and strengthening arts programs where they were weak, and bringing life to the arts where it was vacant. Prior to his work in Fresno Unified, Mr. Kristensen was a High School Band Director for 25 years in the state of Oregon, as well as both Clovis and Clovis West High Schools in Central California. His marching and concert ensembles have won many national, state and local championships, and superior ratings. Mr. Kristensen earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from San Jose State University, where he studied percussion with Anthony J. Cirone. He also credits Fred Sanford, Robert Kalkofen, Ralph Hardimon, and Andy Narrell for his percussion development. He has performed with various symphonies and artists, as well as having marched with and taught, the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps. Mr. Kristensen is a highly recognized music adjudicator and clinician world-wide, having judged both the (BOA) Bands of America Grand Nationals and the Drum Corps International (DCI) World Championships several times. He has served as President of the Western Band Association (WBA) and President of the Fresno-Madera County Music Educators Association (FMCMEA). This year, he was recognized by CMEA as California’s Outstanding Administrator. He is married to Kim, and they have a daughter named Ryann. Ronnie Rios, Harlingen, TX Ronnie Rios graduated Summa Cum Laude earning a Bachelor of Music Education and a Masters in Music Education from Texas A & M - Kingsville. He began teaching in the Kingsville ISD where his middle school bands and high school bands saw much success. Currently as Director of Bands at Harlingen High School, all five concert bands have received consistent Sweepstakes awards, Best in Class, State and National awards and All-State Band and Jazz Band students. The Harlingen High School Marching Band has made nine consecutive appearances at the Texas State Marching Contest, qualifying every opportunity since 1998. The band has also earned positions in the finals of Bands of America (BOA) Regionals, where they won the school's first Regional in 2005. The Marching Band has also won numerous festival awards and Grand Champion Marching recognitions. The Concert Band has advanced to the Texas 6A Honor Band Finals four times finishing as high as 9th. The Jazz Ensemble has received consistent Best in Class and numerous “Outstanding Band of the Festival” awards. Mr. Rios has been named to the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers numerous times and was named Teacher of the Year in the Harlingen CISD. He has also received the Distinguished Citizen Award by the community of Harlingen and is also a past Texas Young Bandmaster of the year recipient. Mr. Rios is a member of TMEA, TBA, TMAA, TJEA, Phi Beta Mu and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He is the Past President of IAJE-Texas, TJEA, past TMAA Vice-President and served as the TMEA State Band Chair. He is the current TMEA Region 28 Band Chair. Mr. Rios has served as a clinician and adjudicator in Texas, Arizona, Kentucky, Georgia, Nevada, California, New Mexico and Indiana. He currently serves as an active adjudicator for UIL, DCI, and BOA. Ken Turner, Appalachin, NY Ken Turner has an extensive history in the field of music education and pageantry. During his career as an educator he served as a band director, supervisor of music, clinician, musical arranger, program coordinator, consultant, adjudicator, and guest conductor. His high school concert band, jazz ensembles, and marching bands have won numerous local, state, and national honors. Ken has also served as the Music and Brass Caption Chairman for Drum Corps Associates (DCA), the New York Federation of Contest Judges (NYFCJ), Drum Corps East (DCE), and Drum Corps International (DCI), as well as Judge Administrator for the New York Field Band Conference and as Chief Judge and Judge Administrator for Drum Corps International. He has been a member of the DCI Task Force, the Drum Corps Strategic Planning Committee and the DCI Rules Committee and has served as a clinician and adjudicator at numerous state, national, and international musical events in North America, Europe, and Japan. Ken served as Director of Music for the Johnson City Central School District in Johnson City, New York, which was Page 2 of 4 honored on 6 occasions by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences as a GRAMMY Signature School, and was also recognized as one of the Best Communities in America for Music Education by NAMM. He served for 4 years as a member of the National Advisory Board for the Partners in Education Program at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and received special recognition from the Kennedy Center for his contribution to the program.
