However, bats are critical pollinators to commercially important agricultural products, such as durians. This study intends to confirm the role of small pteropodid bats as pollinating agents to flowering durian trees. Samplings were conducted in April 2018 to record bats visiting the flowers of two durian species,Durio zibethinus and Durio lowianus at Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) Jerangau, Terengganu. Captured bats were swabbed for conspecific pollen load on their bodies to determine their potential role as pollinators. Floral biology and pollination strategy of Durio (Malvaceae) in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. Biodiversitas 21: 5579-5594. This study was carried out to investigate on the flowering mechanisms of four Durio species in Sarawak. The anthesis started in the afternoon (D. graveolens and D. zibethinus), evening (D. kutejensis) or midnight (D. griffithii); and lasted between 11.5 hours (D. griffithii) to 20 hours (D. graveolens). All four Durio species are generalists. Individuals of a fruit bat (Eonycteris spelaea, Pteropodidae) are considered as the main pollinator for D. graveolens, D. kutejensis, and D. zibethinus while spiderhunter (Arachnothera, Nectariniidae) is also proposed as a primary pollinator for D. kutejensis. Five invertebrate taxa were observed as secondary or inadvertent pollinators of Durio spp.: honeybee, Apis sp. (Apidae), stingless bee, Tetrigona sp. (Apidae), nocturnal wasp, Provespa sp. (Vespidae), pollen beetle (Nitidulidae), and thrip (Thysanoptera). Honey bees and stingless bees pollinated all four Durio species. Pollen beetles were found to pollinate D. griffithii and D. graveolens while nocturnal wasps were found to pollinate D. -

11TH FLORA MALESINA SYMPOSIUM, BRUNEI DARUSSALM, 30 JUNE 5 JULY 2019 1 Welcome message The Universiti Brunei Darussalam is honoured to host the 11th International Flora Malesiana Symposium. On behalf of the organizing committee it is my pleasure to welcome you to Brunei Darussalam. The Flora Malesiana Symposium is a fantastic opportunity to engage in discussion and sharing information and experience in the field of taxonomy, ecology and conservation. This is the first time that a Flora Malesiana Symposium is organized in Brunei Darissalam and in the entire island of Borneo. At the center of the Malesian archipelago the island of Borneo magnifies the megadiversity of this region with its richness in plant and animal species. Moreover, the symposium will be an opportunity to inspire and engage the young generation of taxonomists, ecologists and conservationists who are attending it. They will be able to interact with senior researchers and get inspired with new ideas and develop further collaboration. In a phase of Biodiversity crisis, it is pivotal the understanding of plant diversity their ecology in order to have a tangible and successful result in the conservation action. I would like to thank the Vice Chancellor of UBD for supporting the symposium. In the last 6 months the organizing committee has worked very hard for making the symposium possible, to them goes my special thanks. I would like to extend my thanks to all the delegates and the keynote speakers who will make this event a memorable symposium. LEAF ARCHITECTURE of SELECTED SPECIES of MALVACEAE Sensu APG and ITS TAXONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE
Philippine Journal of Systematic Biology Vol. IV (June 2010) LEAF ARCHITECTURE OF SELECTED SPECIES OF MALVACEAE sensu APG AND ITS TAXONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE ALLEN ANTHONY P. LARAÑO, AND INOCENCIO E. BUOT JR. Institute of Biological Sciences, University of the Philippines Los Baños ABSTRACT The leaf architecture of Malvaceae sensu APG was examined and characterized to determine if it can be used in classification of the family and the identification of its species. Forty species were observed, measured and described. A dichotomous key was constructed based solely on leaf architecture characters. The dichotomous key indicated that leaf architecture characters can be used in distinguishing some species of Malvaceae sensu APG. Some basic leaf architectural characters can also be used in describing certain clades within the family. It is recommended that specimens are collected personally instead on relying on available specimens in the herbarium. Preparation of leaf skeletons through clearing method can also be done in future studies. Increase of sample size is also recommended. KEYWORDS: leaf architecture, APG, classification INTRODUCTION Malvaceae Jussieu, nom. cons is a newly circumscribed family of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG, 2003). This family now comprises 243 genera and 4225 species which are mainly tropical in distribution. In the APG system, member families of Malvales like Sterculiaceae, Bombacaceae, Tiliaceae and Malvaceae sensu strictu were merged to become Malvaceae sensu APG (or lato). This lumping of families became controversial and gained criticism from some taxonomists. Cheek (2006, see also Cheek in Heywood et. al., 2007, Stevens, 2010) opts for a full dismemberment of the super family into ten separate families (Bombacaceae, Malvaceae, Sterculiaceae, Tiliaceae, Durionaceae, Brownlowiaceae Byttneriaceae, Helicteraceae, Pentapetaceae, and Sparrmanniaceae). -

Bioresource Utilization the Biotechnology Option for Malaysia
MINISTRY OF INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT SARAWAK UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA SARAWAK BIORESOURCE UTILIZATION THE BIOTECHNOLOGY OPTION FOR MALAYSIA Edited by GHAZALLY ISMAIL ~ Pelanduk Publications bLo Lf4r )t~6 PREFACE As Malaysia ushers in the 21 st century, a fundamental transformation must take place in the manner we exploit our biological resources. Ma laysia cannot continue to grow while turning its back on the sophisticated means and technologies that are increasingly available today in harnessing bioresources optimally and competitively. A primary challenge that we face is to shift from our presently labour-intensive and raw material based exploitation of our resources to skill- or knowledge-based means of producing value-added resources. In the past two decades, the promise of biotechnology as a commercial success in bioresource exploitation has begun to be realised. This book is the result of a seminar/workshop held in Kuching, Sarawak on 11-13 November 1996 organised by the Ministry of Industrial Development Sarawak.
