I won’t get out of that myself,” he said.

Started career as teenager Thomas began assisting a neighbor in digging graves for Evans Funeral Home in Liberty in the early 1950s. He was 13, and the chore allowed him to skip classes in high school. By the early 1960s, he had teamed with his father, Noble Thomas. At that time, the task paid a meager fee. “Me and Daddy, we got $25 a grave, 12½ for him, 12½ for me. Mr. Jewell Nave [who operated funeral homes in Lebanon and Watertown] volunteered and gave me $35. Every year or two, I’d go up a litt le bit. Later on I had to furnish the lowering device, the tent, chairs and artifi cial turf. When I quit, I was gett ing $500. Now most are gett ing $800 or $900,” he said. “All that 45 years, I don’t reckon but one grave I didn’t have ready out of 8,000. It was solid rock, top to bott om. I take my work very, very seriously.” Thomas gave himself half a day to dig a grave if he didn’t have a heavy load. If he were digging in soft soil clear of rock, he could cut it out in two hours or less. He was on call from funeral home directors 24/7. “Never had a vacation in my life. I can’t think of but one or two Christmas days I spent with my wife and family,” he said of digging across six decades. He and his wife, Bett y, have been married 54 years. He met her on the Woodbury town square, as she hails from the Cannon County community of Ivy Bluff . Bett y is a quilter and stands 5-feet-tall to Frank’s 7-feet. HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO MEET

The Cannon County Historical Society will meet Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cannon County Senior Center, 309 Lehman Street, Woodbury in the small dining area.

Cannon-Rutherford Counties' Public Defender Gerald Melton will gave an account of "Pomp” Kersey and his Confederate band which was massacred at Half-Acre on Short Mountain on July 24, 1864 by a Union force operating out of Liberty.

The story of Hiram Taylor “Pomp" Kersey is one of the major Civil War encounters taking place in Cannon County.

Gerald and Marsha Melton reside at Half-Acre or Mechanicsville in the Short Mountain area. Their home is about one mile from the massacre scene and about a half-mile in the other direction from the Melton Cemetery where Pomp was buried.

Mr. Melton is a long-time student of the War Between the States, with particular interest in the Pomp Kersey story. His presentation will be of much interest to all Cannon Countians and Civil War buff s.

“We will meet at 6:30 p.m. for refreshments. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Come and bring your favorite "goodies" and snacks,” said Joe Davenport, president.

“Bring someone with you! Every one is welcome, and please consider yourself a "special guest.” I am looking forward to seeing you on November 8th,” Davenport said. OCTOBER 25, 2016 CANNON COURIER PAGE 13 HALLOWEEN R U ready to trick or treat?

Sunny Slope Church of Christ 2297 Sunny Slope Road Jesus walks on water After feeding the 5000, Jesus sends his disciples ahead of him in a boat to cross the Sea of Galilee. Several hours later in the night, the disciples encounter a storm. Jesus comes to them, walking on the water. This terrifi es the disciples who think they are seeing a ghost. Jesus tells them in verse 27, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Peter replies, “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.” So Jesus invites Peter to come. Peter gets out of the boat and begins walking on the water toward Jesus. But when Peter takes his eyes off Jesus and sees the wind and waves, he begins to sink. Peter cries out to the Lord and Jesus immediately reaches out his hand and catches Peter. As they climb into the boat together, the storm ceases. Then the disciples worship Jesus, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Points of Interest from the Story: • Jesus sends the disciples away so he can get alone on the mountainside and pray. Even in his busy schedule, spending time with God is a priority for Jesus. • The disciples, even though they have spent much time with Jesus, don’t recognize him in the storm. Sometimes we don’t recognize the Lord when he comes to us in the middle of our “storms.” • Peter doesn’t begin to sink until he starts looking around at the wind and the waves. Taking our eyes off Jesus, and focusing on the diffi cult circumstances will cause us to get under our problems. But when we cry out to Jesus, he catches us by the hand and raises us above the seemingly impossible surroundings. • Peter starts out with good intentions, but his faith falters. This does not, however, end up in failure. Peter, even in his fear, cries out to the Lord, the only one who can help him. • When Jesus gets in the boat, the storm ceases. When we have Jesus “in our boat” the storms of life will be calmed and we can worship Him. PAGE 16 CANNON COURIER OCTOBER 25, 2016 PUBLIC NOTICES
