Warren Ellis is largely hit or miss for me. For every Ocean, The Global Frequency, Planetary or The Authority hell give us The Ministry of Space or in this case Storm.Published in the heyday of foil covers when every Marvel character got a mini-series, upon subsequent reads, this was just an opportunity to cash in on the characters success and a healthy speculators market. Storm is the most popular, most recognized, female African American character in comics appearing in her first mini series. If done well, it couldve been like printing money. It wasnt. The repetitive lead ins every issue seemed verbatim and did little to advance the story (and was done to much better effect in Storm: The Arena by Chris Claremont and Igor Kordej). I know every comic is someones first, but it was annoying and pedantic. The story was barely there and there was no urgency by her teammates to resolve the mystery of her disappearance. The main antagonist was far from menacing or engaging our even interesting. Calisto was written in the same one dimensional, cardboard character fashion shes been written in since her debut. A horrible presentation of a great character, relegated to being a butch, Joan Jett knock off with a chip on her shoulder.The saving grace is Terry Dodsons art, but only just so. This isnt todays expert draftsman weve come to hold in high regard. This is the artist at the beginning of his career before he came out of the shadow of being a poor mans Adam Hughes. In this, his virgin outing, you can see his strengths in his drawings of Storm and also where he needs to grow in his drawings of . . . well, everything else. Im sure Terry looks back at this work and shudders. His current X- Men output is heads and shoulders above the work presented here.Overall, the work hasnt aged well and besides being Storms maiden, solo voyage there is nothing remarkable within. Purchase this ONLY if youre a die-hard Storm completist, but manage your expectations.
