Give this Storm a rain check.By K. E. WoolforkWarren Ellis is largely hit or miss for me. For every Ocean, The Global Frequency, Planetary or The Authority he'll give us The Ministry of Space or in this case Storm.Published in the heyday of foil covers when every Marvel character got a mini- series, upon subsequent reads, this was just an opportunity to cash in on the character's success and a healthy speculators market. Storm is the most popular, most recognized, female African American character in comics appearing in her first mini series. If done well, it could've been like printing money. It wasn't. The repetitive lead ins every issue seemed verbatim and did little to advance the story (and was done to much better effect in Storm: The Arena by Chris Claremont and Igor Kordej). I know 'every comic is someone's first', but it was annoying and pedantic. The story was barely there and there was no urgency by her teammates to resolve the mystery of her disappearance. The main antagonist was far from menacing or engaging our even interesting. Calisto was written in the same one dimensional, cardboard character fashion she's been written in since her debut. A horrible presentation of a great character, relegated to being a butch, Joan Jett knock off with a chip on her shoulder. The "saving grace" is Terry Dodson's art, but only just so. This isn't today's expert draftsman we've come to hold in high regard. This is the artist at the beginning of his career before he came out of the shadow of being a poor man's Adam Hughes. In this, his virgin outing, you can see his strengths in his drawings of Storm and also where he needs to grow in his drawings of . well, everything else. I'm sure Terry looks back at this work and shudders. His current X- Men output is heads and shoulders above the work presented here.Overall, the work hasn't aged well and besides being Storm's maiden, solo voyage there is nothing remarkable within. Purchase this ONLY if you're a die-hard Storm completist, but manage your expectations.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I like how she shines in this book. Just amazing! Long ago, Storm won leadership of the underground mutant community known as the Morlocks. But her reign was a distant one, and Storm's neglected subjects grew increasingly embittered. Ultimately, the mad Mikhail Rasputin swept the Morlocks away into another dimension - a harsh dimension where time ran much faster than normal. There, the next generation of Morlock children came of age, hard and cold and bitter. They returned as a terrorist unit called Gene Nation, and Storm nearly had to slay their leader to defeat them. Disturbed by her actions, haunted by the guilt of failing the Morlocks, Storm seeks a new balance in her life. But when she is abducted to Mikhail's brutal dimension, can Storm prevail against the living reminders of her failure? Or will the sins of her past drag her down? • Extending and Visualizing Authorship in Comics Studies
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Nicholas A. Brown for the degree of Master of Arts in English presented on April 30, 2015 Title: Extending and Visualizing Authorship in Comics Studies. Abstract approved: ________________________________________________________________________ Tim T. Jensen Ehren H. Pflugfelder This thesis complicates the traditional associations between authorship and alphabetic composition within the comics medium and examines how the contributions of line artists and writers differ and may alter an audience's perceptions of the medium. As a fundamentally multimodal and collaborative work, the popular superhero comic muddies authorial claims and requires further investigations should we desire to describe authorship more accurately and equitably. How might our recognition of the visual author alter our understandings of the author construct within, and beyond, comics? In this pursuit, I argue that the terminology available to us determines how deeply we may understand a topic and examine instances in which scholars have attempted to develop on a discipline's body of terminology by borrowing from another. Although helpful at first, these efforts produce limited success, and discipline-specific terms become more necessary. To this end, I present the visual/alphabetic author distinction to recognize the possibility of authorial intent through the visual mode. This split explicitly recognizes the possibility of multimodal and collaborative authorships and forces us to re-examine our beliefs about authorship more generally. Examining the editors' note, an instance of visual plagiarism, and the MLA citation for graphic narratives, I argue for recognition of alternative authorships in comics and forecast how our understandings may change based on the visual/alphabetic split.

  • Why Wonder Woman Matters
Why Wonder Woman Matters When I was a kid, being a hero seemed like the easiest thing in the world to be- A Blue Beetle quote from the DC Comics publication The OMAC Project. Introduction The superhero is one of modern American culture’s most popular and pervasive myths. Though the primary medium, the comic book, is often derided as juvenile or material fit for illiterates the superhero narrative maintains a persistent presence in popular culture through films, television, posters and other mediums. There is a great power in the myth of the superhero. The question “Why does Wonder Woman matter?” could be answered simply. Wonder Woman matters because she is a member of this pantheon of modern American gods. Wonder Woman, along with her cohorts Batman and Superman represent societal ideals and provide colorful reminders of how powerful these ideals can be.1 This answer is compelling, but it ignores Wonder Woman’s often turbulent publication history. In contrast with titles starring Batman or Superman, Wonder Woman comic books have often sold poorly. Further, Wonder Woman does not have quite the presence that Batman and Superman both share in popular culture.2 Any other character under similar circumstances—poor sales, lack of direction and near constant revisions—would have been killed off or quietly faded into the background. Yet, Wonder Woman continues to persist as an important figure both within her comic universe and in our popular consciousness. “Why does Wonder Woman matter?” To answer this question an understanding of the superhero and their primary medium, the comic book, is required, Wonder Woman is a comic book character, and her existence in the popular consciousness largely depends on how she is presented within the conventions of the comic book superhero narrative.

Thesis Examination Committee: ______________________________________ Advisor Abigail McGowan, Ph.D ______________________________________ Melanie Gustafson, Ph.D ______________________________________ Chairperson Elizabeth Fenton, Ph.D ______________________________________ Dean, Graduate College Domenico Grasso, Ph.D March 22, 2013 Abstract At just under thirty years the serious academic study of American comic books is relatively young. Over the course of three decades most historians familiar with the medium have recognized that American comics, since becoming a mass-cultural product in 1939, have matured beyond their humble beginnings as a monthly publication for children. However, historians are not yet in agreement as to when the medium became mature. This thesis proposes that the medium’s maturity was cemented between 1985 and 2000, a much later point in time than existing texts postulate. The project involves the analysis of how an American mass medium, in this case the comic book, matured in the last two decades of the twentieth century. The goal is to show the interconnected relationships and factors that facilitated the maturation of the American sequential art, specifically a focus on a group of British writers working at DC Comics and Vertigo, an alternative imprint under the financial control of DC.
