"This is one of several dozen books in Patrick Moore's "Practical Astronomy" series. He concludes that China is unlikely to instigate a confrontation with the US, and that whilst military conflict over the Taiwan Strait is possible, this is more likely to be due to China's inability to prevent US involvement than its willingness to provoke the US. She sensed that lodged within the colorful and beautiful rituals and ceremonies of the indigenous Maasai people were gems of wisdom that could be harvested and shared as antidotes for our increasingly complex, stressful, and often enigmatic modern lives. In the face of constant experience to the contrary, the idea that those who have spent long years in acquiring the knowledge of a particular calling will be most ready to welcome the announcement of new discoveries calculated to remove any errors which may exist in connexion with it, and which errors, of course, must have been always instilled into them as truths, is still generally entertained; and, consequently, the first cry against every alteration is, that those who have been educated in the system which it would subvert, are decidedly opposed to its introduction.

  • Extending and Visualizing Authorship in Comics Studies
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Nicholas A. Brown for the degree of Master of Arts in English presented on April 30, 2015 Title: Extending and Visualizing Authorship in Comics Studies. Abstract approved: ________________________________________________________________________ Tim T. Jensen Ehren H. Pflugfelder This thesis complicates the traditional associations between authorship and alphabetic composition within the comics medium and examines how the contributions of line artists and writers differ and may alter an audience's perceptions of the medium. As a fundamentally multimodal and collaborative work, the popular superhero comic muddies authorial claims and requires further investigations should we desire to describe authorship more accurately and equitably. How might our recognition of the visual author alter our understandings of the author construct within, and beyond, comics? In this pursuit, I argue that the terminology available to us determines how deeply we may understand a topic and examine instances in which scholars have attempted to develop on a discipline's body of terminology by borrowing from another. Although helpful at first, these efforts produce limited success, and discipline-specific terms become more necessary. To this end, I present the visual/alphabetic author distinction to recognize the possibility of authorial intent through the visual mode. This split explicitly recognizes the possibility of multimodal and collaborative authorships and forces us to re-examine our beliefs about authorship more generally. Examining the editors' note, an instance of visual plagiarism, and the MLA citation for graphic narratives, I argue for recognition of alternative authorships in comics and forecast how our understandings may change based on the visual/alphabetic split.

  • Why Wonder Woman Matters
Why Wonder Woman Matters When I was a kid, being a hero seemed like the easiest thing in the world to be- A Blue Beetle quote from the DC Comics publication The OMAC Project. Introduction The superhero is one of modern American culture’s most popular and pervasive myths. Though the primary medium, the comic book, is often derided as juvenile or material fit for illiterates the superhero narrative maintains a persistent presence in popular culture through films, television, posters and other mediums. There is a great power in the myth of the superhero. The question “Why does Wonder Woman matter?” could be answered simply. Wonder Woman matters because she is a member of this pantheon of modern American gods. Wonder Woman, along with her cohorts Batman and Superman represent societal ideals and provide colorful reminders of how powerful these ideals can be.1 This answer is compelling, but it ignores Wonder Woman’s often turbulent publication history. In contrast with titles starring Batman or Superman, Wonder Woman comic books have often sold poorly. Further, Wonder Woman does not have quite the presence that Batman and Superman both share in popular culture.2 Any other character under similar circumstances—poor sales, lack of direction and near constant revisions—would have been killed off or quietly faded into the background. Yet, Wonder Woman continues to persist as an important figure both within her comic universe and in our popular consciousness. “Why does Wonder Woman matter?” To answer this question an understanding of the superhero and their primary medium, the comic book, is required, Wonder Woman is a comic book character, and her existence in the popular consciousness largely depends on how she is presented within the conventions of the comic book superhero narrative.

The storyline presents as if it's going to be yet another example of how weak and vulnerable a supposedly strong superheroine really is, but the weakness angle resolves into a clever plot point by the end, with the return of another classic Captain Marvel villain though how they are explicitly related is still unclear. One of the best things is that Carol is allowed to have female friends and they talk to about their passions, worry about each other, and enjoy one anothers' company. • And San Francisco Is Now a Mutant Sanctuary. Any
“And San Francisco is now a mutant sanctuary. Any of you— and your families or loved ones—are invited to join us here… and know safety and protection our kind has never known.” - Uncanny X-Men #500, 2008 In 2008 the X-Men leave their Westchester mansion in New York for San Francisco, and soon after settling in to west coast life, they set up a new secret headquarters in the abandoned military bunkers in the Marin Headlands. With this dramatic move, the superheroes reclaim San Francisco as a place of tolerance and acceptance. Both fans and critics of the comic have identified parallels between activist movements and the non- conforming X-Men, who can still see the utopian potential of the Bay Area, even as they acknowledge that San Francisco “rents are positively astronomical, even for super millionaires like us.”1 Like the X-Men, Jerome Reyes understands both the promise and the paradox of the Bay Area. Reyes was born and raised in San Francisco, received his BFA from CCA and his MFA from Stanford, and continues to live and work in the city. His practice is deeply rooted in San Francisco identity and politics, but it also avoids the confines of the local, addressing broader, global issues through the microcosm of a specific site. He recently spent almost four years on an expansive conceptual project centered around the I-Hotel, a historically significant senior housing building in San Francisco. In 2012 while an artist-in-residence at the Marin Headlands Center for the Arts, Reyes volunteered at the nearby, no longer operative Nike Missile Base, which Rebecca Solnit once referred to as ““a souvenir from the canceled end of the world.”2 In Gold Blooded—a vernacular descriptor for a San Franciscan that references the Gold Rush and Bay Area optimism in general—Reyes expertly weaves together the intrinsic violence of American military power and the fantastical world of the idealistic X-Men within the context of utopian possibilities in the Bay Area.

  • Reading the Uncanny Xmen: Gender, Race, and The
READING THE UNCANNY XMEN: GENDER, RACE, AND THE MUTANT METAPHOR IN A POPULAR NARRATIVE By Joseph James Darowski A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY American Studies 2011 ABSTRACT READING THE UNCANNY XMEN: GENDER RACE AND THE MUTANT METAPHOR IN A POPULAR NARRATIVE By Joseph James Darowski The first superhero comic book was published in 1938 and since that time the genre has become a staple of American popular culture. While superhero stories have been adapted into every popular storytelling medium, the genre is most closely associated with the comic book industry. This dissertation examines the first 500 issues of The Uncanny XMen, one of the most popular series to be published in America. In particular, the portrayals of race and gender will be analyzed by performing a close reading of the stories published as well as a numerical analysis of the ethnicity, nationality, and gender of the heroes, villains, and guest stars who appear in the series. The X‐Men comic book franchise has a reputation among fans, creators, and scholars as one of the most diverse and progressive superhero comic book titles. The core conceit of the series, that there are people called mutants who are born with powers and abilities that separate them from normal humans, has allowed the themes of societal prejudice and hatred to be explored in a metaphorical fashion, though looking closely at the race and gender of the characters in the series reveals a different reality than the common perception of the series.
