Liaison Officer (Washington, DC)

The University of (UAlberta) in is one of ’s top teaching and research universities; with an international reputation for excellence across the humanities, sciences, creative arts, business, engineering, and health sciences. It offers close to 400 undergraduate, graduate and professional programs in 18 faculties on five campuses - including one rural and one francophone campus.

The University’s e3 Programs are a unique education abroad program offering students the flexibility to choose from language study, an international internship, and academic coursework, all offered through one summer program. Currently e3 is offered in 4 diverse locations – Berlin, Germany; Curitiba, Brazil; Grenoble, France; and Washington, DC, USA. Each location takes advantage of the local history, culture, and industry to combine academics with practical work experience opportunities. In cooperation/consultation with the International Education Abroad Program (UAI-EAP), the Liaison Officer (Washington, DC) will play a major role in the planning and execution of the program, including locating and securing short-term internship placements for all student participants. This position is located in the Washington, DC area.

Additionally, the Liaison will contribute to broader University of Alberta recruitment and relationship building activities in key regions of the US.

Duties

Internships • Advising on opportunities for curriculum development, program design and administrative framework • Sourcing appropriate internship placements for all e3 program participants • Conducting site visits to internship hosts to ensure both host and student expectations are being met and following- up on any issues raised by the host and/or student in regards to internship placements • Identifying classroom and housing rental options for the e3 Program and assisting with contract negotiations in consultation with UAI-EAP • Coordinating and facilitating orientations, guest speakers, group co-curricular and social activities for the duration of the e3 Program • Providing advice to students and faculty regarding local knowledge and cultural adjustment • Advising and assisting with securing visas and other relevant immigration documents for students and UAlberta faculty members participating in the e3 Program • Working with UAI-EAP to ensure support for special needs students, following UAlberta policies and procedures • Providing support and assistance to students and faculty who may experience emergency situations during the course of the program • Researching opportunities for additional courses and internship opportunities (i.e. in themes related to national health, computing science/IT sector, food and entrepreneurship) within, and in addition to, the e3 model.

Student Recruitment • Coordinating student recruitment activities in the region with the overall goals of raising awareness and profile, generating applications for admission, and converting applicants into registrants • Planning, conducting and attending recruitment activities including education fairs, hosting application workshops, school visits, independent counsellor visits, connecting with alumni and parents and attending local Association for College Admission Counselling (ACAC) conferences • Building relations with educational and institutional bodies such as the College Board (NY), Educational Testing Service (ETS), and ACT • Researching and identifying potential articulation partnerships in the region that would support diversification goals and UAlberta Faculty and program capacity targets

University Relations • Contribute to establishing a broader UAlberta presence in Washington and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, including alumni, the Government of Alberta office in DC and research institutes to identify and develop opportunities beyond the e3 framework • Assist with program design and implementation for visits to DC by senior UAlberta representatives • Engage in UAlberta alumni relations in DC, as well as north-eastern and south-eastern US for recruitment and relations purposes • Support development and cultivation of relationships with a select number of key academic partners in the southern and eastern US • Contribute to designing and implementing a select number of events in DC to profile UAlberta (and to collaborate with the Government of Alberta office for all PR-related activities) • Other duties as required

Qualifications • Undergraduate degree in a related field; graduate degree an asset • 3 to 5 years of experience in coordinating student programs; experience working with international students is preferred • Experience in building new networks, particularly in the Washington area • Exceptional written and oral communication skills • Excellent interpersonal/public relations skills • Ability to confer with individuals at all administrative levels with a high degree of professionalism • Comfortable with public speaking and working both independently and as part of a team • Flexibility to adapt to changing goals and objectives • Accurate and efficient time management skills • Interest in and commitment to public life and institutions in Canada and Alberta • Legally entitled to work in the United States

Documents Needed to Apply This is an annual contract, open to renewal. Preference will be given to candidates already in the Washington, DC area. The salary range for this position is $40,000 - $52,000 USD with additional consideration for benefits and business expenses.
