EDMONTON, COMMUNITY OVERVIEW

Edmonton is the Capital of Alberta and between 1900-1910, the Hudson's Bay Company was granted a reserve on much of the Fort's land but in the decade it was eventually all sold off to Edmonton. Edmonton became a city in 1904 and shortly after, with a mere 5,000 people became Alberta's capital Edmonton became the capital of Alberta in 1905, Edmonton, in its role as Gateway to the North[28] established one of the earliest airfields in . It became the first licensed airfield in Canada, Blatchford Field (now Airport), in 1929. Named in honour of former mayor Kenny Blatchford, pioneering aviators such as Wilfrid R. "Wop" May and Max Ward used Blatchford Field as a major base for the distribution of mail, food, and to Northern Canada; hence Edmonton's role as the "Gateway to the North" was strengthened. Much of the growth in technology sectors is due to Edmonton's reputation as one of Canada’s research and education centres. Research initiatives are anchored by educational institutions such as the (U of A) as well as government initiatives underway at the Alberta Research Council and Edmonton Research Park. Annual Events K-Days, formerly known as Klondike Days and Edmonton's Capital Ex, is an annual 10-day exhibition held in Edmonton, Alberta, usually near the end of July. It runs in conjunction with .
