Gabriela Badea Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For
Allegories of Selfhood in Late Medieval Devotional Literature Gabriela Badea Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Gabriela Badea All rights reserved ABSTRACT Allegories of Selfhood in Late Medieval Devotional Literature Gabriela Badea This dissertation is a study of spatial allegorical representations of inwardness in late medieval devotional texts of the fourteenth and fifteenth century, with a focus on the topos of the garden of the contemplation of the Passion as a landscape of the heart. These representations of the self do not follow the temporal logic of autobiography but are instead organized around matrix spaces: architectures or gardens of inwardness. Named by Beaujour in opposition to life-narratives, these miroirs d’encre or literary self-portraits rely on topoï to express the most intimate contours of the individual. The first part of this dissertation considers how identity is negotiated with respect to the devotional norm in two private devotional exercises penned by cultured aristocrats. The abject vision of the penitential self in Henry of Lancaster’s Livre des Seyntz Medicines is rooted in the requirement to describe a deep self ontologically opaque to consciousness, while in René d’Anjou’s Mortifiement de Vaine Plaisance, the sinfulness lodged in the heart is considered through the lens of an anthropology focused on affect. Because of their intertextual nature, locative tropes of interiority constitute an arena in which the individual shapes himself in relation to foundational texts. Topical representations of the self borrow their form from the setting of a particular text or reference an entire textual tradition, inviting the question of the role of reading practices in self formation. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Jews, Music-Making, and the Twentieth Century Maghrib A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in History by Christopher Benno Silver 2017 © Copyright by Christopher Benno Silver 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Jews, Music-Making, and the Twentieth Century Maghrib by Christopher Benno Silver Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Sarah Abrevaya Stein, Chair From the early twentieth century and through at least mid-century, indigenous North African Jews came to play an outsized role as music-makers and music-purveyors across the Maghrib. In Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, all under French rule until the middle of the twentieth century, Jewish vocalists and instrumentalists, record label artistic directors and concessionaires, commercial agents, and sonic impresarios utilized the phonograph and recording technology to safeguard and promote traditional music –– described alternately as “Arab,” “Muslim,” and “Andalusian” –– and to pioneer popular musical forms mixed in style and language (often blending Arabic with French). Those forms produced an emerging realm of popular culture between World War I and World War II. ii Jewish prominence in music was challenged during the interwar period. That challenge emanated from a set of French officials and Muslim elites, who were uneasy with minority overrepresentation in a heritage increasingly considered in national terms and increasingly understood as the exclusive domain of the majority. With the fall of the French Third Republic and the rise of the Vichy Regime during the Second World War, Maghribi Jewish musicians in North Africa and those in metropolitan France were further sidelined and silenced –– although never completely. -

Contamination: 41st Annual Nineteenth-Century French Studies Colloquium Image: Louis Pasteur, by M. Renourad (L’Illustration, 1884) Princeton University November 5-7, 2015 NCFS 2015: Contamination Princeton University November 5-7, 2015 Thursday 5 November Session 1 – 12:00 pm - 1:45 pm Panel 1.A: Impurities of the Novel Chair: Gerald Prince, University of Pennsylvania “Space and Narration in Les Misérables” David F. Bell, Duke University The narrative logic of realist novels is causal, one event in a novel leads logically to another, and the deus ex machina is banished in favor of a logic of encounter and coincidence, organized around the structure of the biographies of individual novelistic characters evolving in a sort of “naturalized” space. Hugo’s Les Misérables is not always, perhaps not even principally, structured by this realist logic. It has been estimated, for example, that about twenty-five percent of the pages of the novel take the form of digressions, tied to narrative events in only loosely thematic ways, where Hugo discusses ideas and issues at a leisurely, didactic pace while the story in the narrative grinds to a screeching halt. It is almost as if the novel’s organization were a reactivation and exploitation of the classic rhetorical notion of the topos. As Frances Yates argued in The Art of Memory, the notion of topos, analyzed in Aristotle’s Rhetoric, came out of a tradition of architectural mnemonics, and this paper explores the role this architectural mnemonics plays in structuring Hugo’s novel. -
