Khanuma Tovstonogov Russian State Academic Bolshoi Khanuma Перевод с русского на английский: http://www.culture.ru/movies/1489 Tovstonogov Russian State Academic Bolshoi Drama Theatre. Released in 1978. Country: USSR. Genre: Melodrama. Running time 139 minutes. Directed by Juri Aksionov, Georgy Tovstonogov. Cast: Lyudmila Makarova, Vadim Medvedev, Vladislav Strzhelchik, Valentina Kovel, Nikolai Trofimov, Vsevolod Kuznetsov, Maria Prizvan-Sokolova, Leonid Nevedomsky, Georgi Shtil, Vladimir Kozlov, Yuzef Mironenko, Ivan Palmu, Yevgeni Solyakov, Evgeniy Chudakov, Yelena Alekseyeva, Gennadiy Bogachyov, Marina Adashevskaya From the article by Oksana Merzlikina Khanum in the newspaper ‘Moskovskaya Pravda’ (2010): Play by Auxentius Tsagareli "Khanuma." The comedy was written by Georgian playwright more than a hundred years ago. It repeatedly was performed, first, on the scene of dramatic theater, then a musical, then appeared on the silver screen. Perhaps everybody perceives it not just as vaudeville with couplets, but as a kind of a musical with songs, dance and pantomime. Music written by the People's Artist of the Georgian SSR, Giya Kancheli, in 1973 for the play in Gorkiy Academic Bolshoi Drama Theatre is quite popular and recognizable. Especially after the whole country saw the televersion of Khanuma. From an article by Evgeny Avramenko Artists of Tovstonogov’s ‘Khanuma’ congratulated a workshop with the premiere in the art-magazine ‘Around’ (2012): It was estimated in the theatre that in 2012 several anniversaries related to Khanuma were united. This year marks 155 years since the birth and 110 years since the death of Tsagareli - Georgian playwright, director and actor; 130 years have passed since the date of writing Khanuma; and, finally, 40 years ago, the premiere of the famous Gorky BDT play was performed. Of course, this performance of Georgy Tovstonogov praised the play (not talking about Georgia, but as for Russia – for sure). Although the director’s choice surprises. ‘The old vaudeville’ about the antics of a matchmaker - chiefly after Dostoevsky, Chekhov, Gorky - seems elegant trifles, Master’s joke. The light comedy with singing, dancing and the simple intrigue, Khanuma was still the acting show. Lyudmila Makarova, Yefim Kopelyan, Vladislav Strzhelchik, Nikolai Trofimov, Vadim Medvedev, Maria Prizvan-Sokolova... Maestros of the ABDT bathed in this unpretentious material, probably, as in the warm waters of the Kura, washing the shores of Tiflis. Tovstonogov had wonderful collaborators: music was composed Giya Kancheli, and the space which held the action was decorated by the artist Joseb Sumbatashvili. His scenography was a “phantasmagoria in the spirit of Pirosmani”. As part of an ancient atmosphere there were kintos (men who were traders or had no specific occupation in Georgia) in the Khanuma - nameless characters performing musical numbers and participated in the reshuffle, some kind of ministers of the proscenium. Of course, talking about the Khanuma it is impossible not to remember the beginning of the play, a favourite time of theatrical memoirs. Voice of Tovstoganov, taped, raised lines by the Georgian romantic Orbeliani: As I close my eyes, you appear in front of me! As I open my eyes, you swim over the eyelashes! Oh, my queen, to the grave I am your poor slave ... For Russian artists it was in some ways a test: to accord the spirit of the Georgian culture, this particular poetic perception of the world. But proposed by Tovstonogov game in the old days, funny pastiche fascinated, tightened and loosened. Interview with Lyudmila Makarova in the newspaper ‘East-Siberian Pravda’ Everybody is Crazy About Khanuma (2003): Who does not know Khanuma? Brilliant, inimitable, St. Petersburg actress, Ludmila Makarova became famous with this role. The play, which has become a classic, theater bestseller, was set by an outstanding director George Tovstonogov. It performed for a long time in the Leningrad Gorky BDT, later its TV version was made and the whole country met the famous matchmaker. I saw the film on TV in Irkutsk. Soon I saw the People's Artist of the USSR L Makarova ‘alive’ - in the play-benefit performance Dear Pamela on the stage of her native Tovstonogov Theatre. Could I have not asked for an interview the actress, legend? Whether a joke: Lyudmila is 82 years old, and 65 years she spent in the theater! 34 of them she has worked with Tovstonogov ... She was the wife of the famous actor Yefim Kopelyan ... We met in her dressing room. Once here, the famous Maria Prizvan-Sokolova has ‘reigned’, Makarova’s favorite actress. Here are the photos of her ... - And among the "other things", of course, Khanuma. Business Card of the actress. The favorite show. It's amazing how in such a Russian actress Tovstonogov saw Khanuma! - The actress has to be able to do everything, to transform into anyone. And then, when you spend so many years with George and have such a great friendship with actors ... It was very easy to play and rehearse. We met Georgian group: the artist, choreographer and composer. We had such fun and interesting rehearsals! And quickly made the play. The public still remembers it. Even now the cashier is asked: "And when Khanuma will be played?" - How long have you played it? - For a long time, and a lot more than 300 performances, probably. Before the sad events started in our theater - one after another actors withdrew from life: Kopelyan, then Strzhelchik. In short, the show went off. Restoring was difficult. We tried several times, but failed. Well, it’s good we still have memories. And viewers still watch Khanum on TV. I even had a call from Tel Aviv and heard that they had watched the play (there are many of ours, from Leningrad), and all of them were so excited! This was our favorite show. So if you watched it, I am very happy for you. Svetlana Mazurova .

This paper focuses on teamwork by the National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (NRU ITMO) and the Aleksandrinsky Theatre in preparation of opening of the New Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre. The Russian State Pushkin Academy Drama Theatre, also known as the Alexandrinsky Theatre, is the oldest national theatre in Rus- sia. Many famous Russian actors performed on the Alexandrinsky’s stage and many great directors. May 2013 marked the opening of the New Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre. The theatre complex comprises three buildings: the new stages building, a media center, and the building housing a center of theatre ed- ucation. Several plays shown simultaneously on multiple stages within the new complex’s buildings constituted the opening gala of the New Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre. The works of Fyodor Dostoyevsky were the plays’ uni- fying theme. NRU ITMO employees developed several interactive theatre pro- ject solutions implemented for the opening of the Alexandrinsky Theatre’s New Stage. CEU eTD Collection 1 ABSTRACT This thesis aims to research the creation of Ilkhom as an experimental theatre studio under Komsomol Youth League and Theatre Society in the late Brezhnev era in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbek SSR. The research focuses on the controversies of the aims and objectives of these two patronage organizations, which provided an experimental studio with a greater freedom in choice of repertoire and allowed to obtain the status of one of the first non-government theaters on the territory of former Soviet Union. The research is based on the reevaluation of late- Soviet/early post-Soviet period in Uzbekistan through the repertoire of Ilkhom as an independent theatre-studio. The sources used include articles about theatre from republican and all-union press. CEU eTD Collection 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am grateful to my research advisor, Professor Charles Shaw, for encouraging me to focus on Soviet theatre developments in Central Asia, as well as for his guidance and tremendous support throughout the research process.
