Tony Abbott's 'private dinner' with Barack Obama actually a lunch attended by dozens February 1, 2016 David Wroe National security correspondent Former prime minister Tony Abbott crossed paths with US President Barack Obama at an event attended by dozens of other people rather than having a "private dinner" as reported. Mr Abbott, who has been in the US for several days, met Mr Obama at a lunch of the Alfalfa Club, an informal gathering of high-powered businesspeople and politicians, according to multiple sources. The impromptu meeting was reported in News Corp papers as the pair having "met privately", suggesting Mr Abbott was still being actively courted and received by the Obama administration in what would be a source of frustration for his successor Malcolm Turnbull. Instead the meeting took place at a larger gathering believed to have been attended by about 50 Washington powerbrokers. Mr Abbott's high-profile engagements in the US in the past week as well as those of former defence minister Kevin Andrews have underscored how the former prime minister and his supporters are determined to project influence as the spear- carriers of the Liberal Party's right wing. The Alfalfa Club, which has existed for more than a century, has about 200 members. Mr Abbott and Mr Obama are understood to have met at a club lunch on Saturday held at the mansion of the revered civil rights leader, lawyer and business executive Vernon Jordan. Mr Abbott is understood to have also attended the club's main social event of the year, a dinner held on Saturday night at Washington's Capital Hilton hotel, though Mr Obama did not attend the dinner.

Now, you have heard President Borman disclose one of my secrets. Yes, it is true that I streaked through the streets of Minneapolis in the interest of full disclosure. (Shake head in disbelief.) But nobody looked. Well, that's not quite true. One person did , and I heard him say, "There's old Hubert with his tongue flapping again. • A Theory of Rhetorical Humor in American Political Discourse
ABSTRACT Title of Document: A THEORY OF RHETORICAL HUMOR IN AMERICAN POLITICAL DISCOURSE Michael Andrew Phillips-Anderson, Ph.D., 2007 Directed By: Professor Robert N. Gaines, Department of Communication This dissertation offers a theory of the strategic use of rhetorical humor in political discourse. This theory accounts for the differences between intentional and unintentional humor while creating a structure for the identification of humorous utterances. The largest gap in the current state of knowledge concerning rhetorical humor is a lack of understanding regarding the connection between humorous attempts and persuasive situations. This area of concern is answered with a classification of the rhetorical strategies of humor. I propose three nested categories for the identification of actions that have amusement or laughter as an expected response. These three categories in order of increasing exclusivity are the risible, humor, and rhetorical humor. The risible includes all stimuli that create amusement, regardless of intention. The risible is not limited to, but includes, those situations in which the speaker did not attempt to use humor but the audience was amused. Humor is a linguistic act on the part of a speaker that carries with it the intended effect of producing a state of amusement or mirth in the audience. Rhetorical humor is a linguistic act on the part of a speaker that carries with it the intended effect of producing a state of amusement or mirth in the auditor for the purpose of bringing about a change in attitude or belief. The theory presented here contends that rhetorical humor can be used to achieve nine strategic objectives for the speaker.

As a result, the actual “work” of the office quite frequently took place outside the confines of the White House. The Directors of the office, Steven Studdert, William Henkel, and James Hooley, spent a considerable time in the field, particularly in support of international travel. Activities within this office centered round the “trip desk,” which was the coordinating point for trips and events, as well as other activities such as site surveys conducted independently of specific trips. The trip desk provided a method to accumulate all related material. Records related to each trip/event were gathered during and after the activity and filed at the trip desk.
