NEWBEC Apr21 Eng Wk3 The Church cannot be more emphatic when it preaches the 18 APRIL 2021 daily reading of the bible. It is through Scripture that we grow in our knowledge and understanding of Christ and our SCRIPTURE QUOTE TO MEMORISE: faith in Him. We need the Word of God in our lives – not only in times of need but also in times of joy and “I will bless the thanksgiving. February 11, 2016 The Honorable Mr. Barack Obama President of the United States of America The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20500 Dear Mr. President, As members of parliament from Southeast Asia, dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights, we write to express our desire for you to make discussion of human rights and the democratic aspirations of the people of ASEAN a priority during the upcoming summit at the Sunnylands estate in California on 15-16 February 2016. As you are surely aware, democracy is struggling in Southeast Asia. Many countries in our region have taken dramatic steps backward in the past two years. While Southeast Asia appeared to be on the cusp of a genuine political transformation only a few years ago, more recently the region has instead witnessed military takeovers, the rollback of fundamental rights, intensifying government-sponsored discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities, and the increasing persecution of activists and opposition voices, including fellow parliamentarians. These setbacks constitute a fundamental threat to the future of the ASEAN Community and the US relationship with it. While we recognize and understand your administration’s desire to strengthen trade and security cooperation with Southeast Asian governments, we urge you to proceed with caution. Human rights, democracy, and basic dignity cannot take a backseat to economic or security prerogatives. Open dialogue on fundamental political and rights-based questions is vital to ensuring the sustainability of bilateral relationships and promoting broad-based benefits of trans-Pacific cooperation. When you sit down with ASEAN leaders in California, we urge you to press them on unfulfilled human rights commitments and to directly raise specific concerns with them.

  • DAP's Slow Momentum Picking-Up in Sibu Malaysiakini.Com April 24, 2013 by Kow Gah Chie
DAP's slow momentum picking-up in Sibu MalaysiaKini.com April 24, 2013 By Kow Gah Chie ANALYSIS SIBU Once the focus of the battleground in the 2010 by-election and the 2011 state elections, Sibu, the third biggest town in Sarawak, seems to have lost its “shine”, where the election mood and momentum has been slow on the ground for DAP. The party appeared to be slower if compared with its opponent - the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) - in terms of election machinery and ceramah crowd response. On the first day of the campaign, DAP’s ceramah held near its Sibu headquarters was only able to attract 1,000 people, while SUPP’s ceramah has a strong crowd of 1,500, far better than during the state elections where it had a poor crowd size of 150 for one of its night ceramah. At SUPP’s ceramah, rounds and rounds of applause followed by whistles were heard, while at DAP’s ceramah only a few people seemed to respond passionately with cheers and applause, while the rest just listened quietly and remained motionless. SUPP’s machinery has come out with new and creative ideas to attract the crowd, and its Lanang candidate Tiong Thai King and Sibu candidate Vincent Lau even danced on the stage, in an attempt to woo the first-time and young voters. SUPP’s supporters have turned their ceramah into a fans gathering, where the elderly and children were spotted carrying posters featuring cartoon designs of both candidates to show their affection toward them.

DAP To Field 11 New Faces In Selangor Bernama 18 April, 2013 KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 (Bernama) -- The DAP will be fielding 11 new faces in Selangor in the 13th General Election, according to its secretary-general Lim Guan Eng. He said among the new faces were the party's election strategy director Ong Kian Ming who would contest the Serdang parliamentary seat, replacing the incumbent Teo Nie Ching who has been moved to the Kulai parliamentary seat in Johor. Besides this, Teresa Kok Suh Sim who won the Kinrara state seat and Seputeh parliamentary seat in the last general election, is only being retained for the Seputeh seats. Speaking at a press conference at the DAP headquarters here Thursday to announced the name of the party's candidates for Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak and Melaka, Lim said Selangor state executive councillor Ronnie Liu Tian Khiew was not being renominated to defend his Pandamaran state seat and that his place would be taken over by Selayang Municipal Council member Tan Pok Shyong. Another notable name to be dropped is Sibu incumbent and Sarawak DAP chairman Wong Ho Leng, who is suffering from brain cancer. He will be replaced by Oscar Ling Chai Yew. Meanwhile, M.Manogaran, the incumbent for the Teluk Intan parliamentary seat will move to Cameron Highlands to take on MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel.

ISSUE: 2018 No. 27 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE ANALYSE CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 7 May 2018 GE14: A Victory for Barisan Nasional in Sarawak Lee Poh Onn* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Sarawak will continue to be Barisan Nasional’s safe deposit role in the 14th General Elections (GE 14) on 9 May 2018. The 2016 Sarawak state elections suggest that the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition is likely to increase its number of parliamentary seats this time round from 25 to 27 seats. Sarawak BN’s promotion of “Sarawak for Sarawakians” and the many pro-Sarawak measures that it has taken in recent years will work in its favour on 9 May. * Lee Poh Onn is Senior Fellow at ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. My thanks to Francis E. Hutchinson and Ooi Kee Beng for their guidance and to Pearlyn Pang for drawing the map on Sarawak. 1 ISSUE: 2018 No. 27 ISSN 2335-6677 INTRODUCTION Malaysia’s general elections on May 9 promise to return many interesting results. Most analysts seem to expect the Barisan Nasional (BN) to be returned to power. For the opposition coalition, Pakatan Harapan (PH), only a huge swing among voters to its side, a so-called “Malay tsunami” will give it a chance of winning. Traditionally, political observers have labelled Sabah and Sarawak as ‘safe deposit’ states of BN. In past parliamentary elections, both states have contributed huge numbers of seats to allow BN to stay in power. This time around, Sarawak is again expected to perform this ‘safe deposit’ role. In fact, the question seems to be, will Sarawak BN under the new Chief Minister Abang Johari secure even more parliamentary seats this year? In the last general elections, held in 2013, BN won 133 of the 222 parliamentary seats.

Tuan Kesavan a/l Subramaniam [Sungai Siput]: Tuan Yang di-Pertua, selamat tengah hari.
