  • The Implication of Conjunctive Element Shifts in the Translation of Argumentative Texts
KEMANUSIAAN Vol. 25, No. 1, (2018), 19–41 The Implication of Conjunctive Element Shifts in the Translation of Argumentative Texts SIEW HUI SHENG SOH BEE KWEE *LOOI WAI LING Malaysian Languages and Applied Linguistics, Faculty of Languages and Liguistics, University of Malaya, 50603 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia *Corresponding author: [email protected] Published online: 20 April 2018 To cite this article: Siew, H.S., Soh, B.K. and Looi, W.L. 2018. The implication of conjunctive element shifts in the translation of argumentative texts. KEMANUSIAAN the Asian Journal of Humanities 25(1): 19–41, https://doi.org/10.21315/kajh2018.25.1.2 To link to this article: https://doi.org/10.21315/kajh2018.25.1.2 Abstract. This study attempts to identify the implication of conjunctive element shifts in the Chinese translation of argumentative column articles by an established columnist. More specifically, this study focuses on the implication of a cohesive shift, which includes explicitations, implicitations, shifts and wrong translations of conjunctive elements in the translated text. The texts in this study are argumentative in nature, and the use of conjunctive elements is pivotal in guiding the reader on the flow of the argument at hand. Through in- depth analysis and observation, it is found that changes in conjunctive elements can affect a translation in six possible ways: altering the intensity of the message, shifting the focus of the message, altering the tone and manner of the texts, causing repetitious and intrusive translations, changing the interpretation of the text, and altering the conversational-like element in the source text.

  • Anwar Downplays Hudud Row in Pakatan Malaysiakini.Com May 1, 2014
Anwar downplays hudud row in Pakatan MalaysiaKini.com May 1, 2014 PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has downplayed the latest round of wrangling between PAS and DAP over the hudud issue. He told Malaysiakini that the two parties have their differences over the issue for some time, but remain on the same page when it comes to issues of governance. “So I think let them continue having this engagement and discussion. We have had a long session yesterday (Tuesday) on this issue,” he said yesterday. He added that the discussion among the three parties in the opposition coalition was cordial despite disagreements. Anwar was responding to a question whether Pakatan Rakyat is in danger of falling apart with the latest dustup over hudud, which includes punishments such as amputations for theft and stoning for adultery. Early last month, Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yaakob said PAS is prepared to table a private member’s bill with the necessary amendments to allow the state to implement its Syariah Criminal Code II Enactment 1993. The enactment has been in place since the 1990s, but could not be implemented under existing federal laws. Since mooting the private member’s bill in Parliament, DAP leaders have vocally opposed the idea and vowed to vote against it. In the latest of these disagreements, DAP acting chairperson Tan Kok Wai warned PAS that it has no place in the Pakatan coalition if the party is adamant in pushing for the controversial law. When asked on how PKR would vote on the bill, Anwar replied, “The issue of how it will be tabled, (and) when it will be tabled, has not been resolved.

  • WITHDRAWAL of CHARGES: ATTORNEY GENERAL SHOULD EXPLAIN by Tun Abdul Hamid Mohamad
1 WITHDRAWAL OF CHARGES: ATTORNEY GENERAL SHOULD EXPLAIN By Tun Abdul Hamid Mohamad On Jun 07, 2018, I wrote, “As his appointment (appointment of Tommy Thomas as Attorney General (AG)) has become a reality, I will not argue about it. On the other hand, I shall wait and see what he will do regarding specific issues and, if necessary, I may comment on it, indeed, I may support or oppose it” (Translation).” I had already made some comments in “Is the AG choosing his briefs like a private lawyer?” (June 25, 2018). Now, it has been reported that he had withdrawn charges against Hassan Karim Member of Parliament (MP) for Pasir Gudang, Thomas Su Keong Siong MP for Kampar, R Sivarasa MP for Sungai Buloh and N Surendran, former MP for Padang Serai. He also dropped charges against PH supporters Syarul Ema Rena Abu Samah, popularly known as “Ratu Naga” and political cartoonist Zulkiflee Anwar Haque, better known as Zunar. They were charged with offences under the Sedition Act, Communications and Multimedia Commission Act, and the Peaceful Assembly Act.- Freemalaysiatoday 10 08 2018 I join the call made by Zainur Zakaria and Ragunath Kesavan for the AG to explain his action. I adopt the reasons given by both lawyers for the call, which I shall not repeat. However, I wish to add that the reasons should be in respect of each charge against each of them. I know that in the past, no AG had been called to give reasons for his withdrawal of charges, publicly. But, that is because, as far as I can remember, no AG had withdrawn charges under similar circumstances as AG Tommy Thomas has done.
