Pakatan Harapan state chief, Ahmad Faizal Azumu, took on the mantle of the 12th Menteri Besar replacing Dato’ Seri DiRaja Dr Zambry Abd Kadir officially on May 12. He Fwas sworn in by Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah at Istana Iskandariah, Kuala Kangsar. The executive councillors, ten in all, took their oath of office on May 19 at the same venue. Executive councillors are equivalent to ministers at the federal level. Each state is allowed to nominate between six and 10 executive councillors and this is specified in the state constitution. They are given specific portfolios and the number may vary from councillor to councillor. The ones responsible for finance, local government, environment, foreign investments and sports (not necessarily in that order) have a heavy burden to shoulder considering the significance of these portfolios. Sim Mungkin Dicalon Semula (BH 13/09/1997)
Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy 2018 - 2022
SARAWAK DIGITAL ECONOMY STRATEGY 2018 - 2022 AN OVERVIEW BOOKLET FOREWORD My first priority for Sarawak since becoming the Chief Minister on the 13th January 2017 was to bring about a major paradigm shift in our development strategy. We have so far been relying heavily on non-renewable resources for our economic development and this is clearly not sustainable in the long run. It was quite obvious, then, with the whole world focused on emerging technologies such as gaming and animation, big data, cloud computing, blockchains, artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, and renewable energy, we have to enter without hesitation into the digital world so that Sarawak will have a chance of enjoying high income. I immediately asked the State Secretary to organise an international conference on the digital economy in Sarawak and spearhead the Digital Economy Transformation. The first International ICT Infrastructure and Digital Economy Sarawak (IDECS) - Transforming Sarawak through the Digital Economy - was held on the 3rd and 4th of April 2017 in Kuching featuring notable local and international speakers with over 1,500 delegates. During the closing ceremony of the conference, I also announced that Sarawak will set up the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), Development Bank of Sarawak (DBOS), as well as a strategic plan for developing the digital economy of Sarawak. I am therefore pleased to present the five years Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy (2018-2022), in which we set out the possible directions Sarawak can take in order to leapfrog into the digital economy to be at the forefront of the digital world. -
Stop Raising Issue of Candidate Lineup, Says Dr Masing
26 AUG 2001 Sarawak-Polls STOP RAISING ISSUE OF CANDIDATE LINEUP, SAYS DR MASING KUCHING, Aug 26 (Bernama) -- Leaders of Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS), a component party of the Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN), should stop raising the issue of the party's candidate lineup, its publicity chief, Datuk Dr James Jemut Masing, said today. "As far as I am concerned, the candidate lineup is final as announced by party president Datuk Amar Leo Moggie yesterday," he told reporters after opening a contemporary ceramics exhibition on "Bunga Terung" at a gallery at the waterfront here. He said the leaders should now close ranks and ensure that the BN won the state election. Moggie had said that the list, which had been endorsed by the party's supreme council, was official and only awaiting endorsement from BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Moggie's announcement put to rest speculations that PBDS deputy president Datuk Daniel Tajem was attempting to make a comeback to active politics. It also meant that Tajem will not be getting PBDS's ticket to contest in the upcoming election despite speculations that he would be replacing Mong Dagang for the Bukit Begunan state seat, which was once Tajem's stronghold for 22 years. Moggie had also said that incumbent Datuk Sng Chee Hua (Pelagus) would be replaced by his 22-year old son, Larry, a new trend for PBDS which is to inject the youth spirit into politics. The other PBDS incumbents retained are Dublin Unting (Batang Ai), Gabriel Adit (Ngemah), Joseph Entulu (Tamin), John Sikie Tayai (Kakus), Datuk Dr James Jemut Masing (Baleh) and Stanley Ajang (Belaga). -

February 11, 2016 The Honorable Mr. Barack Obama President of the United States of America The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20500 Dear Mr. President, As members of parliament from Southeast Asia, dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights, we write to express our desire for you to make discussion of human rights and the democratic aspirations of the people of ASEAN a priority during the upcoming summit at the Sunnylands estate in California on 15-16 February 2016. As you are surely aware, democracy is struggling in Southeast Asia. Many countries in our region have taken dramatic steps backward in the past two years. While Southeast Asia appeared to be on the cusp of a genuine political transformation only a few years ago, more recently the region has instead witnessed military takeovers, the rollback of fundamental rights, intensifying government-sponsored discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities, and the increasing persecution of activists and opposition voices, including fellow parliamentarians. These setbacks constitute a fundamental threat to the future of the ASEAN Community and the US relationship with it. While we recognize and understand your administration’s desire to strengthen trade and security cooperation with Southeast Asian governments, we urge you to proceed with caution. Human rights, democracy, and basic dignity cannot take a backseat to economic or security prerogatives. Open dialogue on fundamental political and rights-based questions is vital to ensuring the sustainability of bilateral relationships and promoting broad-based benefits of trans-Pacific cooperation. When you sit down with ASEAN leaders in California, we urge you to press them on unfulfilled human rights commitments and to directly raise specific concerns with them. -
GE13: REFSA Chooses Transformation on Sunday, May 5, Malaysians Go to the Polls
SAYS GE13: REFSA chooses transformation On Sunday, May 5, Malaysians go to the polls. For the first time in our history, in the 56 years since Merdeka, we have a real choice in choosing who to grant the privilege of governing us. Which coalition will you choose? The incumbent Barisan Nasional (BN), which is the only federal government that all of us have known so far? Or the young upstart Pakatan Rakyat? We at REFSA have made our choice. We choose transformation. We choose Pakatan Rakyat. Pakatan has transformed race relations. Malaysians of all races gather congenially under the PAS moon and DAP rocket. A Malaysian-Chinese flying the PAS flag, or a Malay waving the DAP rocket symbol, would have been an unimaginable sight as recently as Feb 2008. Pakatan leaders have transformed the prisms by which we view each other, and led Malaysians from narrow communal siloes to broader, harmonious relations. Pakatan has transformed state governments. The federal Auditor- General has given Penang top marks for being the best financially- managed state; and the RM1.2b cash savings in Selangor are the highest in 28 years. Pakatan state governments were the first to give direct welfare aid to Malaysians: for example, the Senior Citizen Appreciation Programme in Penang and the TAWAS programme in Selangor. Pakatan has demonstrated that it is possible to be financially responsible and populist at the same time. Pakatan has proven that it can transform Malaysia for the better, in contrast to the „transformation‟ that (caretaker) prime minister Najib uses as a smoke-screen to hide business- as-usual shenanigans. -
