Sim Mungkin Dicalon Semula (BH 13/09/1997)
Stop Raising Issue of Candidate Lineup, Says Dr Masing
26 AUG 2001 Sarawak-Polls STOP RAISING ISSUE OF CANDIDATE LINEUP, SAYS DR MASING KUCHING, Aug 26 (Bernama) -- Leaders of Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS), a component party of the Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN), should stop raising the issue of the party's candidate lineup, its publicity chief, Datuk Dr James Jemut Masing, said today. "As far as I am concerned, the candidate lineup is final as announced by party president Datuk Amar Leo Moggie yesterday," he told reporters after opening a contemporary ceramics exhibition on "Bunga Terung" at a gallery at the waterfront here. He said the leaders should now close ranks and ensure that the BN won the state election. Moggie had said that the list, which had been endorsed by the party's supreme council, was official and only awaiting endorsement from BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Moggie's announcement put to rest speculations that PBDS deputy president Datuk Daniel Tajem was attempting to make a comeback to active politics. It also meant that Tajem will not be getting PBDS's ticket to contest in the upcoming election despite speculations that he would be replacing Mong Dagang for the Bukit Begunan state seat, which was once Tajem's stronghold for 22 years. Moggie had also said that incumbent Datuk Sng Chee Hua (Pelagus) would be replaced by his 22-year old son, Larry, a new trend for PBDS which is to inject the youth spirit into politics. The other PBDS incumbents retained are Dublin Unting (Batang Ai), Gabriel Adit (Ngemah), Joseph Entulu (Tamin), John Sikie Tayai (Kakus), Datuk Dr James Jemut Masing (Baleh) and Stanley Ajang (Belaga). -
SPDP Holds First Meeting Headed by Mawan
14/11/2002 SPDP holds first meeting headed by Mawan KUCHING, Wed. - The newly-formed Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party held its first meeting-cum-briefing here today attended by representatives from 55 former divisions of the deregistered Sarawak National Party (SNAP). SPDP pro-tem president Datuk William Mawan Ikom described the meeting as a `new era' after eight months of leadership crisis in SNAP which climaxed in its deregistration on Nov 5 and the registration of SPDP three days later. "This meeting will also chart the direction where we will go and within the Barisan Nasional context," he said in his opening speech. He said SPDP members needed to change in tandem with time and political situation. Mawan, who is the State Environment and Public Health Minister, said what happened during the meeting of the SNAP central executive committee on April 20, 2002, was the tip of the iceberg. (At that meeting, he and eight other party leaders walked out before voting took place to sack Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing from SNAP). "What happened in SNAP has become history, but its spirit and struggle must go on through SPDP," he said, adding that the formation of SPDP was a way of rehabilitating SNAP members as indicated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad when commenting on its deregistration recently. He said the meeting today was to endorse the steps that had been taken by the party leaders as well as to show the party's appreciation to Dr Mahathir, his deputy Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud for their sympathetic attitude to former SNAP members. -

Inadvertently, these studies of globalization have also high- lighted that the 1980s and 1990s debate on democratization in the region Responses to – which focused on the emergence of the middle classes, the roles of new social movements, NGOs and the changing relations between state and civil society – might have been overly one-dimensional. Although globalization increasingly frames the processes of democracy and develop- restructuring governance and ment, nonetheless, the governments and peoples of Southeast Asia have deepening democracy been able to determine the pace and character – even the direction of these processes – to a considerable extent. Adenan Hits Campaign Trail Running, Najib Goes to Hinterland Malaysiakini.Com Apr 29 Th , 2016 Adrian Wong and Lu Wei Hoong
Adenan hits campaign trail running, Najib goes to hinterland MalaysiaKini.com Apr 29 th , 2016 Adrian Wong and Lu Wei Hoong S'WAK POLLS As much as scandal-ridden Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak wants to secure BN victory in Sarawak, he is rarely seen campaigning in urban constituencies where the voters are more familiar with political development. This is the total opposite of the campaign trail of Sarawak BN chairperson Adenan Satem, a popular figure and super campaigner who has been making his rounds at all these constituencies. Riding on the ‘Adenan factor’, the caretaker chief minister has been going all out fishing for votes for BN candidates and BN direct candidates. Meanwhile, Najib, who has visited the Borneo state more than 50 times since he assumed premiership, mainly focused on bumiputera-majority and rural constituencies. His itinerary avoided urban seats, particularly Chinese-majority constituencies. The opposition has been maximising on the goods and services tax (GST) and Najib's scandals as campaign fodder, as these issues are being discussed by voters in the urban areas. In his attempt to capture a major vote bank, Adenan attended events organised by the big-six timber companies in the state before nomination day. At one event, he even reportedly warned the employees to choose between their rice bowl or vote for the opposition. 'Super weekend' trail Adenan, who appeared in the southern part of Sarawak after nomination day, is planning to spend the next two days – also called ‘super weekend’ – campaigning in the central and northern regions where SUPP had suffered huge losses to the opposition in previous elections. -

PM, CM meet SPDP amid complaints of being shortchanged MalaysiaKini.com Apr 18 th , 2016 Kow Gah Chie Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, who is also BN chairperson, has promised to assist the Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) amid complaints of being shortchanged. This was according to the party’s senior vice-president Paul Igai, who revealed that an impromptu meeting between Najib, Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem and SPDP president Tiong King Sing (photo) took place in Sibu yesterday morning. He said SPDP had voiced concern over its survival to the prime minister and chief minister during the meeting, which lasted for almost an hour. SPDP is left with no representatives in the state legislative assembly following its ex-president William Mawan Ikom and four incumbent state assemblypersons forming a splinter party called Teras. Adenan had allocated three out of SPDP's eight traditional seats to the splinter party. In the 2011 state election, SPDP contested in Tasik Biru, Pakan, Meluan, Bekenu, Marudi, Batu Danau, Ba'kelalan and Krian. Ba'kelalan and Krian fell to Sarawak PKR chairperson Baru Bian and vice-chair Ali Biju respectively. SPDP's dilemma is similar to that of Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP), where seven out if its 19 traditional seats were allocated to the splinter United People's Party (UPP). The candidates from both UPP and Teras were asked to resign and contest as BN direct candidates. Still loyal to BN Meanwhile, Paul also brushed aside speculation that SPDP would quit BN out of frustration. "This notion has never cross our minds, we are true loyalists of BN," he told Malaysiakini. -

Impressive Results Await BN in Sarawak State Elections
ISSUE: 2016 NO. 20 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE SHARE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 3 May 2016 Impressive Results Await BN in Sarawak State Elections By Lee Hock Guan* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Sarawak state elections will be won by the Barisan Nasional. The question is really, by how much. Taib Mahmud’s successor as chief minister, Adenan Satem, has through various measures taken over the last two years, increased his personal popularity and the popularity of his party tremendously. While there have been disagreements within both the coalitions – Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) – those within PH are most serious, and damage the credibility of its component parties even at the federal level. This may affect voter support in the general elections to be held within two years. As the situation now stands, the opposition parties have lost the initiative that they had in 2011, and are basically carrying out damage control measures. Retaining the same number of seats they won in 2011 will be their most realistic strategy. * Lee Hock Guan is ISEAS Senior Fellow and co-coordinator of the Institute’s Malaysia Studies Programme 1 ISSUE: 2016 NO. 20 ISSN 2335-6677 ETHNIC POLITICS WITHOUT UMNO Much of what lies behind Sarawak’s political conditioning is in the fact that the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), Malaysia’s federally dominant party, has never established itself in this East Malaysian state where Malay voters constitute a minority. Instead, UMNO, through the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition model in which it is the decisive voice, has strategically formed political pacts with parties representing Sarawak’s Muslim bumiputras, Christian bumiputra minorities and Chinese. -
