Once Upon A Wire Wheel by Bernie and Norm Koglin This is the first in a series of articles recalling a few highlights from the fifty year history of the Chicago Region SCCA. Most of the information in this article is found in a history of the Club’s early years written by Fred Wacker some years ago. We also wish to thank Burdie Martin for the loan of his copies of the very earliest issues of PISTON PATTER which are an invaluable source. In the Beginning…… 1948- 1954 The term “sports car” would have meant very little to a vast majority of Americans in the years right after World War II. Then, MG TC’s began arriving in the U.S. and a few people started to take notice. Among them was Fred Wacker, who purchased one of the first little British cars in early 1948. In May of that year, Fred and Bud Seaverns drove the MG to Indiana-polis for the 500. After the race they were caught in the usual traffic jam, and came across Bill Spear and Sam Bailey, a couple of New Yorkers, in a Bentley. A mutual interest in their respective cars led to introductions, and in due course Fred and Bud heard of the “Sports Car Club of America” for the first time. Ownership of a “sports car” was an SCCA membership requirement at that time. Since Fred qualified in that respect, Bill and Sam suggested he become a member of the Club. After joining, Fred discovered there was no Chicago Region. -

AMC Straight-6 Engine 1 AMC Straight-6 Engine
AMC straight-6 engine 1 AMC straight-6 engine The American Motors Corporation (AMC) straight-6 family of engines was used in AMC passenger cars and Jeep vehicles from 1964 through 2006. 195.6 American Motors' first straight-six engine was the 195.6 cu in (unknown operator: u'strong' L). It was produced from 1958 through 1965 in both overhead valve (OHV) and flathead (L-head) side-valve versions. Sometimes referred to as the 196 engine, this engine was originally designed by Nash in the 1930s as a flathead, and redesigned as an OHV engine in 1956. The flathead version was discontinued for 1956–1957, but reemerged in 1958 as the economy engine for the "new" Rambler American. When the engine was changed to an OHV configuration the water pump was moved from the left side of the engine (driven by a shaft extending from the back of the generator) to the front above the timing chain. When the flathead model was reintroduced it also received the new water pump. Equipped with such high quality parts as forged crankshafts and connecting rods, these engines earned a reputation for remarkable durability. The flathead, however, was prone to the typical flathead problem of overheating under sustained heavy load. This was from the hot exhaust traveling through the cylinder block to the exhaust manifold. American Motors introduced a die-cast aluminum block version of the OHV 195.6 cu in (unknown operator: u'strong' L) engine in 1961. It was produced through 1964. This engine used cast-iron cylinder liners and a cast-iron head. -

Penske / Roy Woods Racing Trans Am Javelin Parts
Penske / Roy Woods Racing Trans Am Javelin Parts At the end of the 1969 race season, Roger Penske Racing accepted the challenge of turning the AMC Javelin into a successful race car for the 1970 Trans Am season. Despite persistent engine oiling issues, the Penske Racing Javelin finished second in the 1970 Trans Am series. In their second year of campaigning the Ford Boss 302, Bud Moore, with a driver team of Parnelli Jones and George Follmer, won the 1970 T/A Championship. When Penske and Donohue took on the challenge of racing the Javelin, they inherited the two Javelins raced in 1969 by Ronnie Kaplan Racing. Donohue determined that the 1969 cars were not race-worthy, so Penske Racing set about building three new Javelins. To make the Javelin race-worthy, many of the AMC parts had to be replaced with custom fabricated parts. It seems that no part was left untouched. The spare parts for the #1 Javelin arrived in California in the Shelby/RWR shipping containers. The parts included a full set of Koni shocks. All of the Koni shocks are date coded “1970”- just as they should be. However all four of the Koni shocks had been modified. Two of the shocks have had oil reservoirs welded onto the shock body. The other two shocks have fabricated top mounts. All four shocks have had a section of tube welded to the bottom to accommodate a spherical bearing. The photo below shows the Koni shocks as received. The four spare shocks, as well as the four Koni’s on the Javelin, have since been restored. -

1968 AMC Javelin The Javelin was a production version of one of the AMC AMX prototypes shown during the 1966 AMX project nationwide tour. Intended to rival other pony cars such as the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, it debuted in 1968. Available engines were a 232 cu in (3.8 L) straight-six and three V8s. With its standard engine, the Javelin cruised at 80 miles per hour (129 km/h), while the 290 cu in (4.8 L) V8 boosted top speed to 100 miles per hour (161 km/h). The optional "Go Package" included a four-barrel carbureted 343 cu in (5.6 L) V8, power front disc brakes, dual exhausts, and wide tires, that delivered the 60 miles per hour (97 km/h) dash in eight seconds and a top speed approaching 120 miles per hour (193 km/h). Also available was the SST trim level that provided a greater degree of luxury. In mid-1968 the AMX 390 cu in (6.4 L) engine was offered as a Javelin option. Its impressive 315 hp (235 kW; 319 PS) and 425 lb·ft (576 N·m) of torque could send the Javelin from zero-to-sixty (60 miles per hour (97 km/h). in the seven-second range. American Motors supported the AMX and Javelin with a "Group 19" range of dealer- installed performance accessories. These included a dual four-barrel cross-ram intake manifold, a high performance camshaft kit, needle-bearing roller rocker arms and dual- point ignition. PAGE 1 OF 2 Road & Track compared the Javelin favorably to its competitors on its introduction in 1968, describing the "big, heavy, super-powerful engine" as "an asset in such a small vehicle", and the styling as "pleasant." The car was longer and roomier than its competition (Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, and Plymouth Barracuda), and the Javelin's styling was arguably the cleanest of the lot. -

The #3 was driven by the two Austrians, Helmut Marko and Rudi Lins www.porscheroadandrace.com Some say this was the best Daytona 24 hour ever. It certainly was the closest finish up to that point in time. My friend Hal Crocker called this time in sports car racing, a battle of the giants. This was the last year of the 5.0-litre sports cars in the World Championship. The race would be between the 1970 Championship winning Porsche 917 and a bevy of privately entered Ferrari 512’s. These cars were quite amazing and exciting to watch. Daytona in 1971 had no chicane on the back straight, as it does today. These cars were reaching speeds near 220 mph by the time they got to the Daytona east banking. These were prototype sports cars with around 600 horsepower weighing less than 1900 pounds. Compared to the cars of today, these cars were rudimentary technology. The 917 chassis were in fact made completely out of aluminium tube structure.
