APRIL 7-9, 2017 GPLB.COM 1 2 TOYOTA GRAND PRIX OF LONG BEACH Dear Members of the Media: Welcome to the Roar by the Shore…the 43rd Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. We've designed this media guide to assist you throughout the weekend, whether it be to reference historical data, information on this year's event or information and statistics on our six weekend races. It also includes a section on transportation, hotels and restaurants to make your stay in Long Beach more efficient and enjoyable. Our three-day weekend is packed with activities on and off the track. In addition to the racing, two concerts will take place: on Friday night at 6:45 p.m., the Tecate Light Fiesta Friday concert will feature popular Mexican rock band "Moderatto," while on Saturday night, "SMG Presents Kings of Chaos Starring Billy Idol, Billy Gibbons and Chester Bennington" will entertain the Grand Prix crowd at the Rock-N-Roar Concert. The Lifestyle Expo, located in the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center, will see more than 180,000 Grand Prix fans walk through multiple times. Our annual media luncheon takes place on Thursday, April 6, and will feature drivers from many of the racing series that will be here over the weekend. Once Upon A Wire Wheel by Bernie and Norm Koglin This is the first in a series of articles recalling a few highlights from the fifty year history of the Chicago Region SCCA. Most of the information in this article is found in a history of the Club’s early years written by Fred Wacker some years ago. We also wish to thank Burdie Martin for the loan of his copies of the very earliest issues of PISTON PATTER which are an invaluable source. In the Beginning…… 1948- 1954 The term “sports car” would have meant very little to a vast majority of Americans in the years right after World War II. Then, MG TC’s began arriving in the U.S. and a few people started to take notice. Among them was Fred Wacker, who purchased one of the first little British cars in early 1948. In May of that year, Fred and Bud Seaverns drove the MG to Indiana-polis for the 500. After the race they were caught in the usual traffic jam, and came across Bill Spear and Sam Bailey, a couple of New Yorkers, in a Bentley. A mutual interest in their respective cars led to introductions, and in due course Fred and Bud heard of the “Sports Car Club of America” for the first time. Ownership of a “sports car” was an SCCA membership requirement at that time. Since Fred qualified in that respect, Bill and Sam suggested he become a member of the Club. After joining, Fred discovered there was no Chicago Region. -

Once again it is with great sadness that I inform our club members about the loss of one of our own amongst the P76 fraternity. Victorian P76 club member who contributed greatly to the club over the years Mike Chadwick passed away recently. It is at these times we realise how precious life is. Our thoughts and support go out to both Mike’s Family at this time of loss. -----------------As one door closes another opens ----------------- The Club would like to welcome a new member. LOLA AT 60 WE CELEBRATE ONE OF THE GREAT RACING CAR CONSTRUCTORS Including FROM BROADLEY TO BIRRANE GREATEST CARS LOLA’S SECRET WEAPON THE AUDI CHALLENGER The success of the Mk1 sports-racer, usually powered by the Coventry Climax 1100cc FWA engine, brought Lola Cars into existence. It overshadowed the similar e orts of Lotus boss Colin Chapman and remained competitive for several seasons. We believe it is one of designer Eric Broadleyʼs greatest cars, so turn to page 16 to see what our resident racer made of the original prototype at Donington Park. Although the coupe is arguably more iconic, the open version of the T70 was more successful. Developed in 1965, the Group 7 machine could take a number of di erent V8 engines and was ideal for the inaugural Can-Am contest in ʼ66. Champion John Surtees, Dan Gurney and Mark Donohue won races during the campaign, while Surtees was the only non-McLaren winner in ʼ67. The big Lola remains a force in historic racing. FACT SHEET The Formula 5000 Championship is. * A professional road racing series for single-seat, open-wheel cars * Co-sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America and the United States Auto Club * For cars meeting both SCCA's 5-liter (305cid) American stock block engine specifications carrying a maximum of 30 gallons of gasoline and USAC's specifications for 161cid turbocharged , 255cid double overhead cam or 320 stock block and head with maximum 40 gallons alcohol (mandatory). All turbocharged cars are required to make a mandatory pit stop The Formula 5000 Championship will. * Be contested on road courses in the popular two-heat and feature race format. Following establishment of a two-two grid through qualification runs, cars in odd-numbered positions (1, 3, 5, etc.) will compete in the first qualifying heat. Even-numbered positions (2, 4, 6, etc.) will com- pete in the second qualifying heat. This made a change from Taupo Car Club assisting HRC at Taupo HRC meetings. Thanks to all The Motorsport Club personnel who assisted at the event. It was most appreciated by the Taupo Car Club. On Sunday, in association with Barfoot and Thompson, HRC ran a charity event at Hampton Downs and raised over $16,000 for Starship Foundation and Blind Foundation Guide Dogs. Rides were auctioned on Trade Me for rides on Side car motorbikes. Paul Radisich gave rides in the super lap March owned by Glenn Hodges and Stephen Armstrong made the Alan Moffat replica RX7 available for rides. Not only was it great to raise money these worthy causes it exposed new people to our sport. In the afternoon we ran our one of our successful Introduction to Motorsport events. The format for the day is a drivers briefing, then a walk round the track (this had to be skipped this because of a heavy shower) Then a slow drive round the track (follow the leader) for 6 laps to learn the correct lines. -

The #3 was driven by the two Austrians, Helmut Marko and Rudi Lins www.porscheroadandrace.com Some say this was the best Daytona 24 hour ever. It certainly was the closest finish up to that point in time. My friend Hal Crocker called this time in sports car racing, a battle of the giants. This was the last year of the 5.0-litre sports cars in the World Championship. The race would be between the 1970 Championship winning Porsche 917 and a bevy of privately entered Ferrari 512’s. These cars were quite amazing and exciting to watch. Daytona in 1971 had no chicane on the back straight, as it does today. These cars were reaching speeds near 220 mph by the time they got to the Daytona east banking. These were prototype sports cars with around 600 horsepower weighing less than 1900 pounds. Compared to the cars of today, these cars were rudimentary technology. The 917 chassis were in fact made completely out of aluminium tube structure. But yet, they were as fast, top speed wise, as anything running today. www.porscheroadandrace.com The cockpit of the #4 Martini car driven by Elford and van Lennep – it was pretty basic stuff compared to today’s cars Porsche entered four cars. -
