We've designed this media guide to assist you throughout the weekend, whether it be to reference historical data, information on this year's event or information and statistics on our six weekend races. Our three-day weekend is packed with activities on and off the track. In addition to the racing, two concerts will take place: on Friday night at 6:45 p.m., the SMG Fiesta Friday concert will feature popular local Latino band "Ozomatli," while on Saturday night, SMG Presents The Cult will entertain the Grand Prix crowd. The Lifestyle Expo, located in the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center, will see more than 180,000 Grand Prix fans walk through multiple times. Our annual media luncheon takes place on Thursday, April 12, and will feature drivers from many of the racing series that will be here over the weekend. Media interested in attending should contact us. Formula One cars from the Masters Historic Racing series! Tornado warnings! Sun! Rain! More sun! Great racing! We had it all! Photos by John Walker VARAC Vintage Grand Prix Celebra3ng 1967, “The Summer of Love”. ! story for Victory Lane, by Jeremy Sale ! ! ! Cast your mind back Jifty years….1967, it was “The Summer of Love” peace and love, baby! It was also the year Mosport (now Canadian Tire Motorsport Park) hosted Canada’s Jirst Formula One Grand Prix. VARAC celebrated this milestone June 15, 16, 17 at their 2017 Vintage Grand Prix. Mosport is a very challenging track, it’s on many drivers must do list and attracted the entries this year from both Formula One and Formula Juniors, as well as vintage racers from all over the world, come to test their mettle, or sometimes metal… ! VARAC put on a great show with vintage and historic cars from across the spectrum. The main feature for 2017 was the Formula Junior Diamond Jubilee World Tour. The tour began in South Africa and included sectors in Europe, Australia and New Zealand before coming to Canada for part of the 2017 North American Peter Ryan Trophy tour. ! In addition to the wonderful Formula Juniors some 18 historic (1960s through 1980s) Formula One cars from the Masters Historic Racing series decided they too, wanted to tick Mosport off their must do list. These beautiful machines had been a popular support race at the Canadian Grand Prix held in Montreal the weekend before. -

Eppie Wietzes had a long and successful career in many different cars. John Wright’s story is in this issue, with photos from Ron Kielbiski, Paul Madder, Tom Flaherty, Jr., John Cross, R. Campbell, and the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame. Yeah! VARAC’s back on track! We have reports from Mosport and Calabogie! Photos by John Walker, with reports by the usual suspects, all the race news that fits…. Eppie Wietzes Eppie Wietzes raced everything from a Morris Minor to a Formula One Lotus 49, a Brabham Formula One car (above) and various Lola and McLaren Formula 5000 racecars. Inducted into the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1993 the board recognized Eppie’s outstanding contribution to racing not only in Canada but also around North America. The following is condensed from an interview by John Wright. Photos by Paul Madder, Eppie Wietzes. May 1939-June 2020 Eppie Wietzes was born in Holland, his father brought the family to Canada and opened up a gas station. “I left school in Grade Seven because I had become the breadwinner, as my Dad was ill. So, at about age 17 I was running the gas station on Eglinton.” Wietzes later bought a Morris Minor to race. “It was a second hand car I bought for $100. I decided to put in an Austin A40 engine of 1240cc displacement. You could do that in the Improved Production class at that time. -

The Peter Jackson Trophy Race at Shannonville. This event was named in honour of our good friend, whose passion was motorsport. Peter was a long >me member of the amateur motorsport community in Ontario and Winnipeg, having organized, par>cipated in and officiated at many race, ice race, auto slalom and other motorsport events. A long>me member of Oshawa Motor Sport Club (OMSC) and Vintage Automobile Racing Associa>on of Canada (VARAC), Peter served on the Board of Directors of OMSC and of Canadian Automobile Sport Clubs – Ontario Region (CASC-OR), the Ontario Region race sanc>oning body. Peter was well- known by many people in the race community, and he will be missed by all who knew him. Peter Jackson Memorial Trophy Races Peter Viccary reports: “Shannonville was a very successful event for our small three genera>onal team. I was delighted that my son Shane and grandson Ayden were able to join me for the weekend at the last minute. Ayden (le_) immediately took the point; chief engineer, strategist, and cheer leader. Redman is a former three-time Formula 5000 driver’s champion, winning from 1974-76.The feature race of the weekend is the Formula 5000 Revival Series, which brings the popular open-wheeled class launched in 1968, back to one of its iconic circuits to mark the championship’s 50th anniversary. Redman’s four-decade career also includes victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 12 Hours of Sebring, and Formula 1. ! “It’ll be a pleasure to return to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, where I had some great races over the years,” said the 81-year-old Redman, who now calls Vero Beach, Florida home. “I look forward to meeting some old racing friends and to driving round this historic race track once again.” ! “We are obviously very honoured to have Brian Redman as the Grand Marshall for our Vintage Grand Prix weekend,” said Ron Fellows, co- owner, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. “Mr. Redman was the most dominant driver of Formula 5000 in the 1970s and having him here at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park to help us celebrate that great era of open-wheel racing is a fantastic addition to our event.” ! Photo by John Walker The VARAC Vintage Grand Prix at Canada’s Canadian Tire Motorsport Park opened with record-breaking grids and the promise of a great summer weekend of racing. But, as the story goes, “It was the best of ,mes, it was the worst of ,mes.” In vintage racing you never really know what to expect, perhaps inclement weather, possible mechanical problems…but of course you never expect a fatality. ! On Saturday, June 16th, Jeff Green, (above) an accomplished racer from Illinois, leS the track at Corner 8 in his 1972 Lola T300 and succumbed to his injuries. Seb Coppola, president of Formula 5000 Driver’s Associa,on said “Jeff began racing with the Formula 5000 group in 2016, having purchased the ex-Jerry Hansen 1972 Lola T300. He was an experienced racer, having raced in the Pro Mazda Series. He was very suppor,ve of F5000 and thrilled to be able to race the car of his boyhood hero. The Formula 5000 group is devastated by the loss of our friend and race partner. We will miss him dearly.” Jeff’s F5000 Lola car was an entrant in the Formula 5000 feature for the 2018 VARAC VGP. Fingly VARAC welcomed Brian Redman as Grand Marshall. Along with mul,ple wins in various formulae Redman won the F5000 championship in 1974, 1975 and 1976. -
