  • Once Upon a Wire Wheel
Once Upon A Wire Wheel by Bernie and Norm Koglin This is the first in a series of articles recalling a few highlights from the fifty year history of the Chicago Region SCCA. Most of the information in this article is found in a history of the Club’s early years written by Fred Wacker some years ago. We also wish to thank Burdie Martin for the loan of his copies of the very earliest issues of PISTON PATTER which are an invaluable source. In the Beginning…… 1948- 1954 The term “sports car” would have meant very little to a vast majority of Americans in the years right after World War II. Then, MG TC’s began arriving in the U.S. and a few people started to take notice. Among them was Fred Wacker, who purchased one of the first little British cars in early 1948. In May of that year, Fred and Bud Seaverns drove the MG to Indiana-polis for the 500. After the race they were caught in the usual traffic jam, and came across Bill Spear and Sam Bailey, a couple of New Yorkers, in a Bentley. A mutual interest in their respective cars led to introductions, and in due course Fred and Bud heard of the “Sports Car Club of America” for the first time. Ownership of a “sports car” was an SCCA membership requirement at that time. Since Fred qualified in that respect, Bill and Sam suggested he become a member of the Club. After joining, Fred discovered there was no Chicago Region.

PR Document 2020 Japanese Super Formula Championship Series Media Information August 27 2020 1 Super Formula : Then and Now In the 1950s, the Fédération Internationale de I’Automobile (FIA) launched the Drivers’ Championship to find the world’s fastest formula car drivers the purest form of racing machine. That ethos was passed on to all FIA national member organizations.Top-level formula motor racing has been held in Japan in various forms since 1973, when Formula 2000 was first launched. The competition evolved into Formula Two in 1978 and then Formula 3000 in 1987. Japan Race Promotion, Inc. (JRP) was established in 1995 and continued carrying the competition torch in 1996 under the name of Formula Nippon. In 2013, the name of the competition was changed again to Japanese Championship Super Formula and a bold plan was implemented to upgrade the race cars and lift the profile of the competition with the clear aim of spreading the appeal of Super Formula from Japan to other parts of Asia. Another hope was to turn the series into a third great open-wheel racing competition to go along with Formula One and IndyCar. The competition’s name was changed again in 2016 to Japanese Super Formula Championship. In 2017, BS Fuji began broadcasting live Super Formula races, giving many motorsport fans the chance to watch championship races on free-to-air television. In the early days, formula racing in Japan was led by top drivers such as Kunimitsu Takahashi, Kazuyoshi Hoshino and Satoru Nakajima, who later competed on the global stage in Formula One.

Has Wales Finally Found A New F1 Star? It’s more than 35 years since a Welsh driver last lined up on a Grand Prix grid. Now some pundits are suggesting that we may finally have a worthy successor in the making to Ruthin’s Tom Pryce. At just 19 years of age, Matt Parry from Cardiff recently became the 25th recipient of the prestigious McLaren Autosport BRDC award. Previous winners include Jenson Button, David Coulthard and three time IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti. The achievement is all the more remarkable when you consider that, as Matt himself points out, he was relatively late coming to four wheeled racing, having first opted for the two wheeled variety. Call Number: Archival Collection 26 Quantity: 931 cubic feet (514 flat archival boxes, 98 clamshell boxes, 29 filing cabinets, 18 record center cartons, 15 glass plate boxes, 8 oversize boxes). Abstract: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers 1905-2011 contain his extensive research files, photographs, and prints on a wide variety of automotive topics. The papers reflect the complexity and breadth of Ludvigsen’s work as an author, researcher, and consultant. Approximately 70,000 of his photographic negatives have been digitized and are available on the Revs Digital Library. Thousands of undigitized prints in several series are also available but the copyright of the prints is unclear for many of the images. Ludvigsen’s research files are divided into two series: Subjects and Marques, each focusing on technical aspects, and were clipped or copied from newspapers, trade publications, and manufacturer’s literature, but there are occasional blueprints and photographs. Some of the files include Ludvigsen’s consulting research and the records of his Ludvigsen Library. Scope and Content Note: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers are organized into eight series. The series largely reflects Ludvigsen’s original filing structure for paper and photographic materials. Series 1. Subject Files [11 filing cabinets and 18 record center cartons] The Subject Files contain documents compiled by Ludvigsen on a wide variety of automotive topics, and are in general alphabetical order.
