So many times in my life, I have failed to start something because I had not yet adequately prepared. I would have started working out or going for a jog, but I needed to get the right shoes. I would have started eating right if only I could find the time and money to buy the right foods. I would have started that journaling project, but I couldn't without a really nice leather-bound journal. I would have, I would have, and I would have! I know many people can relate. We offer up excuses for so many things. Sometimes we even get to the point where we do start something, but by then, we have already lost so much time. Some of us are thinking about taking a stewardship way of life seriously, but we are just not ready yet. We would be more generous if we can first get out of debt. We would give of our time, but we have to wait until the kids get older or until we fully research our options. The truth is, we don't have to be in any particular state of life or have any specific financial portfolio to start giving our very selves to God. God takes us as we are now. No resume needed. Why waste so much time thinking about getting started and becoming serious? Time is a gift given to all of us. As we think and prepare endlessly, we are practicing poor stewardship. The time to start is today. Who wants to answer God one day at the gates of Heaven saying, "I would have."? - Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS Sunday, July 14, 2019 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time 7

A special recollection from Karen Liebert:

“For many years, my husband and I have known and admired Dr. Sophie Schorr-Reiner, whose family was saved in Poland from the Nazis with the help of a Catholic priest, Father Franciszek Bajer. Beginning in 1939, he found Polish families willing to hide her father, her mother and her. Sophie was only 12 years old then. In remembrance and gratitude, Dr. Sophie had this special plaque made to honor Fr. Bajer. Living in Bradenton, she asked around to other Catholic churches to see if she could place the plaque there. She was denied several times before Fr. Edward Morretti welcomed her to place it in the chapel here at Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles. Dr. Sophie died on June 28, 2019. Enclosed is her obituary for those interested.”

Dr. Sophie Schorr-Reiner (1927-2019) — Jewish Holocaust Survivor and Dedicated Doctor MINNEAPOLIS — Dr. Sophie Schorr-Reiner, 92, of Bradenton, Florida and formerly of Utica, NY, a kind, generous, devoted physician, and loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully from heart failure, June 28, 2019, at North Memorial Hospital, with her family at her side. Sophie was born, February 12, 1927, the only child of Otto and Mary Schorr and raised in the small town of Zalosce, Poland (now Zalizsti, Ukraine). She had an idyllic childhood until 1939 when the outbreak of World War II fractured her family's lives. As circumstances for Jews in Poland worsened under the Nazis, Sophie, her father and mother were each hidden, in three separate locations, by courageous Polish families who took enormous personal risks to save them. Sophie considered it a miracle that, not only did they survive the Holocaust, but that the three of them found each other and were reunited after the war. After the war, Sophie enrolled in the University of Munich Medical School. She graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1951, after which she emigrated with her parents to the United States and pursued specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Bronx, New York. Although Polish was her mother tongue and she was fluent in Ukrainian, she learned German for her medical school training and rapidly learned English in America. During her time in the Bronx, she met the love of her life, Julius Reiner, another Holocaust survivor. The couple married in 1955 and settled in Utica, New York. All who knew her would agree that Dr. Sophie Schorr-Reiner was a "force of nature". She was a tireless physician, wife and mother. While running a thriving solo practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology, which routinely involved delivering babies in the middle of the night, she managed to raise three sons, cook and clean and eventually take care of her aging mother. During her 38 years of practice, she delivered over 5,000 babies and provided health care to many of the women of Utica, NY. She was a generous soul who welcomed newcomers, friends and family to her home. She also remained grateful and devoted to the people from Poland who saved her life. In 2013, she was gratified to return to Poland, for the first and only time, in order to attend the wedding of her savior's great-granddaughter. Following retirement, Sophie and Julius spent a number of peaceful, relaxing years in Bradenton, FL and Minneapolis, MN, where she had the opportunity to enjoy watching her grandchildren grow up. They maintained close relationships within the community of other Holocaust survivors who emigrated to the U.S. Sophie loved animals, especially her miniature schnauzers and she enjoyed reading and playing tennis. With Julius as partner, she was an avid social and duplicate bridge player, ultimately achieving the level of Life Master. Sophie was extraordinarily devoted to Julius, to whom she was married for 61 years, and was his steadfast companion and caretaker prior to his death in 2017. Sophie is survived by her three sons and her grandchildren.

are all bibles the same? No. The Catholic Bible contains seven books of the Old Testament which are not found in Protestant Bibles. These books include: • Judith • Tobit • 1 Macabees • Baruch • Wisdom • Sirach • 2 Macabees • (Plus … portions of Esther and Daniel) These books are sometimes referred to as the “Apocrypha” by Protestants or the “Deuterocanonical” books (meaning “also canonical”) by Catholics. A brief Bible History (It is helpful to remember that God never handed down a complete Bible and said “Here it is.” Rather, over centuries of salvation history the Holy Spirit inspired the authors of Sacred Scripture to write down God’s revelation to us. As time went on, the Church compiled these books to form a “Canon” - an authoritative set of Scripture.) During the early centuries of the Church there was plenty of debate and discussion about which books actually were authentic and inspired Sacred Scripture. The early Church councils of Hippo (393) and of Carthage (397) both declared that the books currently contained in the Catholic Bible (the canon of Sacred Scripture) were the inspired Word of God and belonged in the Bible. During the Reformation, Martin Luther and other Protestant leaders removed these books from the Bible. Luther even argued that the Letter of St. James and the Book of Revelation (The Apocalypse) should be removed from the Bible. The Council of Trent in 1546 reaffirmed what the councils of Hippo and Carthage had proclaimed over 1000 years earlier: that the texts found in the Catholic Bible are all the authentic Word of God and comprise the complete canon of Sacred Scripture. catholic bible translations There are several different English translations available for the Catholic Bible. The primary ones include: – This is the oldest English translation available and is frequently compared with the King Douay Rheims James version because of its use of “Thee”, “Thou” and other older forms of words. This translation is considered highly accurate but can be more difficult to read for some people. – This was a joint translation project between American Protestants and Revised Standard (RSV) Catholics with the Catholic Church completing the translation of the Apocrypha. This translation is considered the most accurate modern translation but still contains “Thee” and “Thou” when referring to God. This translation along with the New American Bible was approved for liturgical use in the United States. – This version is almost identical to the regular Revised Standard but Revised Standard 2nd Edition updates the language by getting rid of “Thee” and “Thou”. – This version is the most common American translation. It was written New American Bible (NAB) for an eighth grade reading level and contains the most “modern” language of the primary Catholic translations. The New American Bible is available in more versions than any other Catholic Bible. – This edition was released in 2011. It combines New American Bible – Revised Edition (NABRE) the New Testament from the New American Bible with a completely revised Old Testament translation. – The Jerusalem Bible, completed in 1966, is very similar to the Revised Standard Version Jerusalem Bible 2nd edition in that it is a modern English language translation. It was produced under the direction of the Dominican scholars at the renowned Ecole Biblique de Jerusalem. email us @… Sunday, July 14, 2019 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time 13 Parish Office [email protected]
