St. Irenaeus Parish, Park Forest, Illinois October 14, 2018 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time the Newest Saints of God in the Communion of Saints! St. Irenaeus Parish, Park Forest, Illinois October 14, 2018 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time The Newest Saints of God in the Communion of Saints! This past Sunday, Pope Francis canonized 7 saints, among them were St Oscar Romero and St Pope Paul VI. St Oscar Romero was archbishop in EL Salvador during the time when an oppressive government used the military to kidnap and execute citizens who were not friendly to the rulers. Oscar Romero began to recognize the oppression and began to speak out against the military regime. When Romero’s friend Fr Rutillio Grande, SJ was brutally murdered, Romero began to see the call in his own life to speak out against the repression, he would become the shepherd for the campesinos-the workers, he became the voice for the voiceless. He spent the rest of his life defending human rights and the dignity of all the people in El Salvador. On March 24, 1980 he was assassinated while saying mass in a hospital chapel in San Salvador. St Oscar Romero, pray for us! Also canonized the same day was St Pope Paul VI who was elected pope in 1963 after the death of St Pope John XXIII. St Pope Paul is known for having continued the work of the Second Vatican Council begun by St Pope John XXIII, St Pope Paul brought it to completion in December of 1964. He issued current teaching on birth control in 1968. He also published Populorum Progressio is the encyclical written by Pope Paul VI on the topic of "the development of peoples" and that the economy of the world should serve mankind and not just the few. It was released on March 26, 1967. St. Pope Paul VI, pray for us! The list of other saints canonized are: Francesco Spinelli, diocesan priest, founder of the Institute of the Sisters Adorers of the Most Holy Sacrament; Vincenzo Romano, diocesan priest; Maria Katharina Kasper, virgin, founder of the Institute of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ; Nazaria Ignacia de Santa Teresa de Jesús (née: Nazaria Ignacia March Mesa), founder of the Congregation of the Missionary Crusaders of the Church. All you holy men and women hear our prayers! Paul Thigpen in his article What Is the Communion of Saints? In OUR SUNDAY VISITOR says that, “Showing honor is a natural human response to the goodness, even the greatness, of another human being. We honor the founders and other leaders of our country from throughout history. We name cities after them, write books about them, make statues of them to erect in public places. We paint pictures of them to display in schools and government buildings. We speak reverently and gratefully of them on patriotic holidays.” “We do similar things for great scientists, great leaders of social movements, great artists and musicians. Why? Because it’s a matter of justice to recognize their gifts and contributions to us. Justice means giving to each his due, and we recognize that we owe much to these great human beings, and we want to say so in different ways.” “In all these ways, we are venerating these great men and women — we are giving them honor. And so we shouldn’t be surprised that the Catholic Church venerates the great heroes of the Faith, who over the centuries have embodied in an extraordinary manner the way of life to which we’re called as Christians. Now that these men and women have been perfected by God and are saints standing face to face with Him in heaven, we have even more reason to venerate them.” And so the Communion of Saints connects us one to the other as we stand on the shoulders of all those who went before us. Those holy men and women of St Irenaeus who are the modern day, faithful disciples of Jesus. That means it is all of us! We are the holy people of God who, in the everyday events of our lives, live in the grace and mercy and compassion of the One who made us and loves us unconditionally! All you holy men and women pray for us! Fr Terry Remembering All Souls This year, to celebrate the feast of All Souls, we will be creating a banner with the names of all our beloved dead. We invite you to write the names of any deceased loved ones on the banner found on the table outside the family room. The banner will be raised and displayed in church beginning November 2nd. Liturgy of Remembrance & Pictures for the Month of November ach year during the month of November, as we celebrate All Saints Day and All Souls Day, the Church also takes time to remember those E who have recently died and gone home to God. The Liturgy of Remembrance will be held on Sunday, October 28 2018 at 10:30am. It is a time to gather together to celebrate the hope our faith is able to offer. We hope you are able to join us to remember the recently deceased members of our parish family. All parishioners are invited to bring pictures of deceased loved ones to place on the side altar. These pictures will remain on the altar for the month of November. Shopping with Scrip/Gift cards is easy! Canonisation of Oscar Romero & New Diocesan Shrine On 14th October 2018, St Oscar Romero was canonised in Rome, alongside Pope St Paul VI. Archbishop Peter Smith issued a decree officially designating the "Romero Space" in St George's Cathedral a Diocesan Shrine. Those wishing to mark Romero's Canonisation are welcome to attend a National Mass of Thanksgiving which will take place in St George's Cathedral on Saturday 3rd November at 12.30pm. Archbishop Peter Smith will be the Principal Celebrant. All are welcome to the mass, (individuals, families, parishes, schools) and to visit the shrine. Let us savour the magnificent prayer, commonly attributed to St Oscar Romero, pronounced for the first time by Cardinal John Dearden but composed by Bishop Ken Untener. The Romero Prayer It helps, now and then, to step back and take the long view. The Kingdom is not only beyond our efforts; it is even beyond our vision. We accomplish in our lifetime only a fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God’s work. Nothing we do is complete, which is another way of saying that the kingdom always lies beyond us. No statement says all that could be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith. No confession brings perfection. No pastoral visit brings wholeness.

The Century of Romero: 1917-2017 1 The Century of Romero: 1917 – 2017 August 2017 saw the centenary of St Oscar Romero’s birth. This is the timeline of those one hundred years with key dates in his life and the subsequent road to canonisation in 2018. 1917 Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez was born in Ciudad Barrios on August 15th, into a family of modest means, the second of eight children of Santos Romero and Guadalupe de Jesús Galdámez. 1931 He left behind his apprenticeship to a local carpenter and entered the minor seminary in San Miguel, run by the Claretians. 1937 In January he began studies at the major seminary in San Salvador. In September he was sent to the Pío Latino College in Rome and studied for the priesthood at the Gregorian University. 1942 Romero was ordained priest in Rome on April 4th and then began studies for a doctorate on ascetical theology. 1943 With the intensification of World War II he was sent back to El Salvador, via Cuba where he was interned for three months, arriving in his home diocese of San Miguel in December. 1944 He celebrated his first Mass in Ciudad Barrios on January 11th. Soon afterwards he was appointed Parish Priest of Anamorós and subsequently as Pastor and Cathedral Administrator in San Miguel. There followed more than two decades of devoted priestly service to the Church in San Miguel. 1967 On April 4th Romero celebrated the silver jubilee of his ordination and received the title ‘Monsignor’. He left San Miguel behind and moved to San Salvador to take up the position of Secretary of the Salvadoran Bishops’ Conference.
