    RIGHTS AND DUTIES ARISING FROM THE NATURE OF THE LITURGY Considerations in the light of the Motu proprio Magnum principium Mario Lessi Ariosto, S.J. While the Prooemium of the Constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium affirms that its aim is instaurandum atque fovendam Liturgiam1 it adds that the framing of this requires calling to mind “quae sequuntur principia”2. It is for this reason that in articles 5-13 the theological-pastoral basis of the Liturgy is summarised beginning from art. 11, where the fundamental pastoral principle level “active participation”3 appears, which is further clarified by the adverbs “scienter, actuose et fructuose”. In the articles that follow “participation of the people of God” at liturgical celebrations is specified by other noteworthy adjectives such as: “interna et externa” (art. 19), “plena/plenaria”, “communitatis propria” (arts. 21, 41), “pia” (art. 50), and also with: “facilis” (art. 79), where the Constitution speaks about the possibility of some sacramentals being administered by the laity, although the adverb “facile” was already used along with the verb “percipere” in art. 21. Active Participation The entire work of the reform of the liturgy is to be orientated towards conscious, active, communal, unhindered participation, as part of art. 21 says: “Qua quidem instauratione, textus et ritus ita ordinari oportet, ut sancta, quae significant, clarius exprimant, eaque populus christianus in quantum fieri potest, facile percipere atque plena, actuosa et communitatis propria celebratione participare possit”*. To explain this text it is useful to recall what Dom Cipriano Vagaggini, OSB, wrote in 1964 in The Fundamental Ideas of the Liturgy Constitution, in a paragraph intended to explain “the principal dispositions of mind needed for reform”.

Na wagę tego zagadnienia wskazywał już przed laty Józef Mackiewicz w nienaukowych publikacjach2. W większości współczesnych syntez poświęconych relacji państwo–Kościół ta tematyka także była dostrzegana, brak jednak studiów szczegółowych nie pozwalał na głębsze jej potraktowanie3. Potencjał badań dotyczących tytułowej problema- tyki zasygnalizował niedawno Sławomir Cenckiewicz w dwóch interesujących publikacjach ukazujących działania Służby Bezpieczeństwa podczas soboru4. Bardzo ciekawe badania na temat Soboru Watykańskiego II w kontekście relacji Stolicy Apostolskiej z państwami ko- munistycznymi przedstawił także Andrzej Grajewski5. Warto uzupełnić ten obraz o materiały wytworzone przez służby dyplomatyczne. Wielu badaczy wskazuje na nadzieje, jakie władze w Polsce wiązały z przemianami w Kościele po śmierci Piusa XII6. Remus Mircea Birtz, OBSS Summary This study presents some data about the Romanian Traditional Catholic writers, the painter Paul Scorţescu / Scortesco / Scortzesco (1893, Yassy – 1976, Paris), his brother the diplomatic minister Theodor Scorţescu / Scortzesco (1895, Yassy – 1979, Buenos-Aires), known in the Romanian literature, and Miss Myra Davidoglou (1923, Bucharest – 2001, France) a graphic artist too. Some historical and genealogical data about the Scortzesco Moldavian-Romanian noble family are given, and a short landscape of the Traditional Catholic Resistance. It is proven that the well-known statement of Paul Scortzesco about the 1963 Conclave cannot be true, however without denying the election of Cardinal Giuseppe Siri as Pope (Gregory XVII) in the 1958 Conclave. Some biographical data about the Scortzescos can and must be certainly corrected, when new informations from the yet unknown Romanian Exile Culture will be available. Those wishing to mark Romero's Canonisation are welcome to attend a National Mass of Thanksgiving which will take place in St George's Cathedral on Saturday 3rd November at 12.30pm. Archbishop Peter Smith will be the Principal Celebrant. All are welcome to the mass, (individuals, families, parishes, schools) and to visit the shrine. Let us savour the magnificent prayer, commonly attributed to St Oscar Romero, pronounced for the first time by Cardinal John Dearden but composed by Bishop Ken Untener. The Romero Prayer It helps, now and then, to step back and take the long view. The Kingdom is not only beyond our efforts; it is even beyond our vision. We accomplish in our lifetime only a fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God’s work. Nothing we do is complete, which is another way of saying that the kingdom always lies beyond us. No statement says all that could be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith. No confession brings perfection. No pastoral visit brings wholeness.

    The Washing of the Feet during the Evening Mass on Thursday of the Lord’s Supper _______________________________________________________________ On the authority of Pope Francis, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments [CDWDS] issued a Decree and a Commentary on 6 January 2016 changing the rubric for the Washing of the Feet during the Evening Mass on Thursday of the Lord’s Supper. Here is the English rubric with the edits: The men who have been chosen are Those who have been chosen from amongst the people of God are led by the ministers to seats prepared in a suitable place. Then the Priest (removing the chasuble if necessary) goes to each one, and, with the help of the ministers, pours water over each one’s feet and then dries them. By the action of the Apostolic See, those chosen for the foot washing is open to all members of the People of God – boys and girls, women and men. Those chosen for the foot washing reflect all who make up the People of God, the disciples of the Lord. In the account of the Last Supper in the Gospel of John, the Good News proclaimed during the Holy Thursday Evening Mass, Jesus washes the feet of an unspecified number of disciples. Just as the “beloved disciple” is nameless so that it may be, in fact, every hearer who is the beloved one, the “disciples” are all of us as well. This mandatum , this love command to be of service, to be servants is given to each one of the baptized.

    Is Rejecting the Pius XII Liturgical Reforms Illegal? (2006) by Rev. Anthony Cekada How can you justify using the older rubrics and Missal? QUESTION: I was just wondering how you justify rejection of the Holy Week "reforms" under Pius XII. If the principle of "epikeia" is invoked, it would seem this does not apply given the validity of the reigning Pontiff, and his rightful authority to make such changes. I was under the impression that epikeia only applied when a law began to work against the common good and needed to be ignored. I would ap- preciate your insight. QUESTION: Regarding the 1955 Holy Week changes: in reading the arguments from 1955 for the reasons for the changes, the "innovators" talked of "returning to earlier traditions" and of "simplification of the ceremonies", etc.: the same arguments made later for the entire Novus Ordo. Admittedly, the whole thing stinks of Bugnini. Annibale admit- ted in his memoirs that this was an important step towards the liturgi- cal anarchy he later created with Paul VI and all their Protestant friends and bishops. I have no doubt in my mind that the 1955 changes should have been thrown out (like the rest of Bugnini's "innovations"). However, I have two main questions: what does this say to us of Pope Pius XII in those latter years for permitting and utilizing this new ceremony, and also, since we have been Interregnum since 1958, what justifications do we utilize to individually celebrate the old- er ceremonies which were replaced before 1958 without making it ap- pear that we are "picking and choosing" which ceremonies we want to utilize.
