Billy Preston - The Best Originally released on A&M in 1982 CD released on A&M 3205 in October, 1988 Backing the Beatles on their 'Let It Be' album led to Preston's big break as a s olo artist with his own Apple album, but it was his early-'70s soul smashes "Out a-Space" and the high-flying vocal "Will It Go Round in Circles" for A&M that pu t Preston on the permanent musical map. In 1975 he became the first musical gues t on Saturday Night Live. He died, at age 59, on 6/6/06. I Wrote a Simple Song Greene, Preston 3:26
There are only 10 tracks here on "The Best of Billy Preston," as c ompared with twice that many on the "Ultimate Collection," so while you do get a taste of his dazzling keyboard work, it is just a taste. Granted, all of Presto n's biggies are here, because in addition to the aforementioned pair of hits the re is also "Nothing from Nothing," and "That's the Way God Planned It," his othe r big hits. On the next level would be his version of "Get Back," the Beatles hi t on which he played keyboards, "Space Race," and "You Are So Beautiful," which would eventually become a monster hit for Joe Cocker. So I end up having mixed f eelings about this one, because you do get the songs that would be on your "esse ntial" Billy Preston song list, but not much more. Still, to be fair, for the ca sual fan these ten tracks will fill the bill.

The singer/songwriter/producer/keyboardist extraordinare's greatest-h its set includes the number one pop singles "Will It Go Round in Circles'" and " Nothing From Nothing," as well as the number one R&B hits "Outa-Space" and "Spac e Race"; all were million sellers. The gentle ballad "You Are So Beautiful" was adapted into a gospel song. The included version of the gospel-ish bluesy ballad "I'm Really Gonna Miss You" is the single version and a different take than the one originally issued on Whole New Thing. A great showcase for Preston's massiv e talent.
.
