LIST #798 – MONDAY 21St JUNE 2021 ANGLO AMERICAN TEL: 01706 818604 PO BOX 4 , TODMORDEN Email : [email protected] LANCS, OL14 6DA. PayPal: [email protected] UNITED KINGDOM Website:www.raresoulvinyl.co.uk SALES LIST #798 – MONDAY 21st JUNE 2021 RARE SOUL AUCTION JUNE 2021 Auction finishes THURSDAY 24th JUNE at 6.00pm (18.00) Amazingly, by the time this auction finishes, days will be getting shorter! After depressing you with that fact, we would like to lift your spirits with some nice, rare, soul collectibles. As usual, highest offer at the closing time is the final bid and pays the price offered. Hope that’s clear. Thanks for your interest and attention. MIN. BID JUNE RARE SOUL AUCTION A JESSE JOHNSON LEFT OUT OLD TOWN 1195 WD VG+ 500 What a corker this is, one of the few classic biggies (more at the Mecca than anywhere) never to be booted or reissued. Virtually the same song as Eddie and Ernie’s ‘Outcast’ but different somehow and certainly rather more ‘Northern’. The identity of the singer is unknown (I met the label owner once and he had no idea). Could it be Eddie Campbell himself? Or a member of The Fiestas under a pseudonym? Certainly not a mint copy but check the soundbite – it sounds fine. B ESSENCE OF UP THE MOUNTAIN CHARISMA THE VG++ 500 TIME AURA 1401 We can find but one reference to this obscure 45 on the whole of the internet – and goodness knows what the label is all about. For sure it’s a rarity and probably best described as ‘crossover’. Nice group harmonies, but sadly no ballad flipside. You might not see this one again in a long, long time. C PATRICE HOLLOWAY STOLEN HOURS CAPITOL 5680 M- 250 Lovely copy of this belting piece of Northern Soul courtesy of Brenda’s sister. Patrice was the singing voice of Valerie Brown (but not the acting voice) in the 60s cartoon series ‘Josie and the Pussycats’ – this was the first ever cartoon to feature a black character as a lead component (after some resistance from Hanna-Barbera). ‘Lucky My Boy’ on the flipside makes for a great double-sider. When Patrice passed in 2006, Frank Wilson gave the graveside eulogy. D CHUCK STRONG I GOT TO CHANGE MY WAY ADUWA 348 VG++ 200 OF LIVING The debut 45 from this fine West Coast singer is an excellent bongo-driven soul mover that is much harder-to-locate than is often realised. Back it with genuine Deep Soul in the shape of ‘I Thought It Over’ and someone will get two great sides for their money. E THE CROW YOUR AUTUMN OF TOMORROW INNER EAR 429 VG+ 800 I’ve just completed a book on the year of 1975 and the Northern Soul scene. No record in that year made a much bigger stir than this rarity (which had one-off status). Amazingly, the group (who were black) had a charted UK pop hit in the same year under a different identity! Watch out for the book to find out more. The disc itself remains a 100% certified rarity, that’s for sure. F JOHNNY MAE I HAVE NO CHOICE BIG HIT 105 M- 901 MATHEWS Lovely condition on this Detroit gem, some very tiny marks but that’s it. Records in pristine nick can only get rarer. Referred to as the ‘Godmother of Detroit Soul’, Matthews competed with Berry Gordy as the Motor City moved into the soul era. Their paths were to be very divergent, but Matthews turned out some great stuff – none better than this atmospheric number. G KENNY CARLTON LOST AND FOUND BLUE ROCK VG++ 500 4054 Van McCoy at his 60s best. Carlton has never been satisfactorily explained but sounds a dead-ringer for Kenny Sheppard to our ears. A nice copy with no hiss is mint minus on this side but has a little label wear on the excellent flip ‘Wait Till I Get You In My Arms’ with an odd mark or two. Try the soundbites. H TURLEY I FEEL ALRIGHT COLUMBIA VG++ 700 RICHARDS 43837 Very rare issue copy of this current in-demander. Okay, it has a promo sticker, but this is probably because the record never got to the shops at all, its an issue in effect. One second cue burn soon vanishes but if you want to check, check the soundbite. I THE SOUL THE WORD CALLED LOVE JUNE 21227 VG++ 800 SOUNDS UNL. Ultra-obscure Northern Soul dancer carrying a good amount of quality in its grooves – but wait! The flipside ‘Lost In A Dream’ is indeed a dream for collectors of male group ballads – a total gem of slow soul that we simply had to soundbite! J EULA COOPER TRY TRAGAR 6814 M- 350 Astounding to learn that Eula was in her early teens when she made fabulous soul records for Jesse Jones’ Tragar/Super Sound/Note imprints. A crossover monster of course which remains continuously elusive. K LEE PORTER and NOBODY’S DOIN’ A SELECT-O-HIT M- 250 PEACEFUL DOGGONE THING 026 PERSUASION Talk of elusive reminds me that it took me over 30 years to even see a copy of this after Ian Levine recommended it in Black Music magazine. Great funky-edged Memphis soul from ’74. L JAMES JENNINGS WALKIN’ DOWN STRAIGHT HUMES 5020 VG+ 150 STREET Only our second copy ever of this obscure 1979 Los Angeles double-sided modern mover which hits a great groove. And if the above title is not p.c. enough for you, then try ‘Everything Goes Good With Music’ on the flipside (see soundbite). M JOHNNY THE CHASE IS ON BASHIE 101 WD VG++ 250 HOWARD Massively revived a few years ago and a dancefloor packer to this day from the unknown Johnny Howard. Again, arranger Tom Washington couldn’t remember him – just another day at the office back in ’69 – but what a day. Probably better than the Artistics’ original version. Listed as VG++ but actually only one minor mark. N FRED BRIGGS I’M SO SORRY GROOVE CITY 202 M- 250 Two great sides from Kim Tolliver’s one-time husband on Don Davis’ Detroit label. The uptempo side was probably a bit too ‘Staxified’ to play back in the day but now sounds perfect for any deejay who wants to combine a dance beat and real soul. The flipside ‘Sound Off’ has long been a desired, and difficult-to-find item for Deep Soul fans. O SOUL THOSE LONELY NIGHTS FEE BEE 221 VG++ 780 COMMUNICATERS Featuring the lead vocals of a truly great, and convincing, blue-eyed soulman, the wonderful Chuck Corby. The revival and demand for this one came from one of the very first Goldmine CDs when everyone woke up to the absolute gem it was. Even then, there were precious few copies to satisfy demand. Again, a very strong VG++ copy. P THE ACCENTS YOU BETTER THINK AGAIN AUDIODISC VG+ 200 ACETATE A definite oddity to finish with in the shape of this original acetate which is back in our possession after 30 years (remember… no-one, but no-one, pays better prices than we do). A bit of wear for sure (it never was mint) and its both sides of the Accents’ One-Der-Ful rarity. Seems to be real depth of mastering on this cut… and possibly a one-off. SECOND PAGE FOCUS 1 JOHNNY WATSON IT’S BETTER TO CRY VALISE 6913 M- 50 Previously unissued version of The Appreciations rarity on Sport. 2 RONNIE WALKER TROUBLE IMPACT 101 M- 10 The original version of the Agents with added horns etc. Not released at the time. 3 BOBO MR. SOUL HITCH HIKE TO HEARTBREAK OVIDE 258 M- 20 ROAD What a record! You will not get better at £20. This is the 80s artist Beau Williams (tho he was never ever as good as this one). 4 JACKIE MOORE MAKE ME YOURS KAYVETTE 5129 M- 10 Tremendous, updated version of the Bettye Swann classic. 5 JACKIE WILSON and THINK TWICE BRUNSWICK M- 15 LaVERN BAKER 55287 These two great artists cook up a storm on this one. 6 BOBBY MOORE CHAINED TO YOUR HEART CHECKER 1180 D M- 25 Neat promo copy of this fantastic gritty dancer. 7 GENE CHANDLER SUCH A PRETTY THING CHECKER 1155 M- 15 Superb piece of Northern from one of the legends. 8 THE SUPREMES NATHAN JONES MOTOWN 1183 M- 15 WD White promo copies – actually got quite a revival at Wigan once upon a time. 9 JEANNIE HIT AND RUN CASABLANCA M- 10 REYNOLDS 866 Top rate 1976 mover from L.J.’s sister. 10 BETTYE SWANN I THINK I’M FALLING IN LOVE MONEY 136 M- 15 Simply wonderful double-sider from this great singer. • 1966 Record Releases
1966 UK Record Releases by Date This is a list of all UK 45 singles and EP’s found on the 45 cat website and any new release sheets as of the 15/03/2016. Generally records that don't have a full release are not included. Some spoken word only records are not listed, plus “story” ones. Records that would have had a specific week when they were fist released, but which dates have not been found, but are known to have been issued on an actual month are included at the end of each weekly listing for the month in question. Numbers in red indicate ownership on 45 cat for those with 5 or more. In some cases, such as chart hits, the number of “wants” is added on. Caution should be noted with ownership figure, as the record might have only been available as a promo record that wasn’t issued to the public. These however will be popular with collectors of records. If it is known to be never issued to the public, what is called on the 45 Cat site as a “stock” record. Then that will not be included. In some cases records by well known acts were never issued as “stock” and some of these have been included, but such records are shown as “promo only”. They are included to show that the record couldn’t have made the charts in 1966. At least as a UK issue! Records that made the charts of the time are only stated where no specific week has been found or if a chart record fails to score 5 ownership indications - indicated by the term hit.
