Wooden houses & cobblestone streets The historical lower part of town by the seaside is one of the most uniform 18th century wooden town sections in Finland. Cobblestones, sandy alleys, sheltered courtyards and bright-coloured facades make you smile. Loviisa has the 1970s town architect Elmar Badermann to thank for preserving the lower town plan, town structure and the valuable old buildings as an intact whole. 4 SIGHTS Catch the sights It is wonderful just to wander around in Loviisa, but there are some unique sights you do not want to miss. For example, the beautiful market square and its surroundings, the Kappelinpuisto Park, town museum, old lower town, Suolatori (the ”Salt square”) and the Laivasilta area (with old salt warehouses turned into restaurants and shops). Other points of interest are the Myllyharju song trail with its poem-decorated benches, and the Kukkukivi tower, a panorama lookout over the sea, the fortresses, the Ehrensvärd hiking route for history and nature lovers, Svartholma Sea Fortress, the medieval Pernaja church and the old Strömfors Iron Works.
