MOZART! Premiere 24Th September 2015 RAIMUND THEATER MOZART! – a Worldwide Musical Success Returns The VEREINIGTEN BÜHNEN WIEN presents Premiere 24th September 2015 RAIMUND THEATER MOZART! Premiere 24th September 2015 RAIMUND THEATER MOZART! – a worldwide musical success returns VBW’s original musical MOZART!, by the hugely successful writing team of Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay, returns to its home town in a new version especially created for Vienna after a series of productions abroad. A rock star of the Roccoco era: MOZART! The musical by the dream team of Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay throws light on the world’s most famous composer both as a historical human being and as a legendary figure of classical music. Mozart is presented here as an artist of exceptional talent who, in spite of his gift – or perhaps because of it – struggles with life’s simplest challenges. MOZART! – a coming-of-age drama – tries to show the man behind the cult, the clichés and the kitsch that have sprung up around the historical human being. After numerous international tours, showing to almost two million people throughout a total of seven countries (Austria, Germany, Japan, Sweden, South Korea, Czech Republic and Hungary), MOZART! was celebrating its long-awaited return to Vienna. The latest version - especially for Vienna – had its opening night on the 24 th September 2015 at Raimund Theater. Successful leading team from the world premier We warmly welcome once more the successful leading team from the world premier Harry Kupfer (Production Manager), Yan Tax (Costume Design), Dennis Callahan (Choreography) and Hans Schavernoch (Set Design). Furthermore making the team complete, we welcome Jürgen Hoffmann (Lighting), Thomas Strebel (Sound) and Thomas Reimer (Video). Together they will be bringing MOZART! in a new version, especially adapted for our Viennese audience, to the Raimund Theater. Additionally, the musical will be enriched through a brand new song, from the original authors Michael Kunze (Book & Lyrics) and Sylvester Levay (Music). A Lovers Duet between “Mozart” and “Constance” will be heard for the first time from September onwards. The 27 piece orchestra will be led by VBW Musical Director Koen Schoots . New version especially created for Vienna with well-known friends as well as some new faces Both well-known friends as well as some new faces to the VEREINIGTE BÜHNEN WIEN will be working together to make this world acclaimed hit-musical shine in an amazing new light. In the title role of „Mozart“, Oedo Kuipers , who is currently performing in Andrew Lloyd Webbers THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA in Hamburg as “Raoul”, will be celebrating his VBW debut in MOZART! His father “Leopold Mozart” will be performed by none other than Thomas Borchert , who is well-known by the Austrian audience for among others his superb performances in VBW own productions DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES; ELISABETH and JEKYLL & HYDE. Mark Seibert , last MOZART! Premiere 24th September 2015 RAIMUND THEATER seen at Raimund Theater as “Death” in the 20th Anniversary celebration of ELISABETH, to the audience as well as among other leading roles of famous musicals the term is “Hieronymus Colloredo”. Barbara Obermeier (LOVE NEVER DIES, NATURALLY BLOND) is Mozarts’ sister “Nannerl”. Franziska Schuster (MAMMA MIA!) will be playing “Constanze Weber”, her very first leading role. Ana Milva Gomes , presently “Donna” in MAMA MIA! at Raimund Theater but also well- known for her leading role of “Delores” in SISTER ACT will take the part of “Baroness von Waldstätten”. And last but not least, the role of “Cecelia Weber” will be performed by Brigitte Oelke (WE WILL ROCK YOU, SUNSET BOULEVARD). INTERNATIONAL PRESS REVIEW “This perfect show is the result of two decades' experience of musicals on the part of the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien.” Variety, USA „ … wonderfully catchy melodies that range from ragtime to rock to ballads. …This work is more grand opera than musical, it is serious, tragic and problematic. Its charm stems from characters who, unusually for the genre, are not good or bad but always both. “ Berliner Zeitung, Germany „The splitting of Mozart into the genius and the lusty bon vivant has a charm of its own. Visual attractions with ingenious ideas.“ Süddeutsche Zeitung, Germany „ A performance of dreamlike effects. … enjoyment guaranteed. “ La Repubblica, Italy „ The visuals are world-class. What Hans Schavernoch (sets) and Harry Kupfer (director) conjure onto the stage is poetic, spectacular and in parts breathtakingly beautiful. … pure stage magic “ Kurier, Austria „a sweeping success“ Neue Rhein Zeitung Düsseldorf, Germany MOZART! Premiere 24th September 2015 RAIMUND THEATER Synopsis The focus is on the brilliant artist who escapes from a tyrannical but loving father and flees from a family and social system of paternalism, in order to not only develop as a musician but also as a strong human being - a drama about growing up. Mozart appears in two forms: As the person, Wolfgang and as the ingenious artist, Amadeus. From the cute porcelain child that Amadeus allegedly was, shadowed by the adult Wolfgang. The small Amadeus remains omnipresent throughout Mozarts’ adult life - even if he is only able to be seen by himself and the audience. The child prodigy Amadeus continuously composes while the adult play cards, drinks, lives and loves - while repetitively daring to break out of the prison of conventions lying before him. MOZART! • Cultural Memory in Localized Pop Music(Al) I Am from Austria (2017) –
ISSN 1347-2720 ■ 西洋比較演劇研究 Vol.18 No.1 March 2019 A Jukebox Musical, or an »Austro-Musical« ? – Cultural Memory in Localized Pop Music(al) I am from Austria (2017) – Rina TANAKA Abstract I am from Austria (2017) is an Austrian jukebox musical by United Stages Vienna. The performances of this musical—inside and outside of the theater—were concerned with cultural and identity politics as well as the history of the musical with pop music in Vienna. This paper gives a picture of the local prerequisites for I am from Austria in terms of the actual and historical settings of musicals in Vienna, where the imported concepts of the “musical” and later the “jukebox musical” have been indigenized. Looking at the process of production, performance and reception, I am from Austria was the culmination of the attempts to launch an original musical from Vienna together with the financial support of the municipal government, where the cultural-political mission of musical was discussed. Meanwhile, musicals in Vienna were driven by two motivations: (1) to hybridize this genre with European music theater to reactivate Viennese musical theater, and (2) to interpret it in the contemporary context on site for broader and younger audience, following the nature of popular musical theater that the performing style and form are constantly forced to keep up with the rapid transformation of popular culture on site. The latter perspective is crucial to understanding the growth of the potential audience for I am from Austria as a result of the simultaneous and interactive localization of pop music and musical since the 1960s in Austria.

  • Musicals in Post-Globalization: the Case of “Ever-Growing” Musicals from Vienna Via Japan
ReVisions Musicals in Post- Globalization: the Case of “Ever-Growing” Musicals from Vienna via Japan Rina Tanaka Published on: Mar 14, 2017 Updated on: Jan 04, 2018 ReVisions Musicals in Post-Globalization: the Case of “Ever-Growing” Musicals from Vienna via Japan 1. Introduction The end of the globalization era meant the beginning of new methods, regardless of regional predominance. Today, a new style of performances is coming from non-English-speaking countries even in the genre of musical, which is originally from English-speaking countries. However, it has been overlooked due to the commercial or even mass productive nature of musicals (McMillin 2006, pp. 28- 29), which has been a dominant pattern in musicals for decades[1]. How have musicals been changing in the post-globalization era? This paper analyzes the interactions established between Vienna and Japan by musicals since the 1990s as a possible illustration of the post- global theater. It consists of the following four parts. Section 1 presents two key concepts of this paper, “post-global” and “interweaving cultures in performances” as well as the current situation regarding musicals. Section 2 deals with the short history of musicals in Vienna in the post-war era until the launch of the first successful “Wiener [Viennese]” musical Elisabeth. As Vienna started taking its musical productions to the world, Japan was the first importer of Elisabeth. Section 3 considers two adaptations of Elisabeth in Japan as examples, indicating the reactions of other countries as well as Vienna, including the “re-import” phenomenon. After the great popularity of the Wiener musicals in Japan and the successive adaptations in the world, a new type of co-production developed in Japan.

Inszenierung: Astrid Vosberg Bühne und Kostüme: Thomas Dörfler Mit dir bin ich froh und verrückt. Ich will die beste Frau sein, die es für dich gibt. Sheldon Bloom, lass mich’s tun! Nummern wie „Take That Look Off Your Face“ und „Tell Me on a Sunday“ stürmten auch die Charts. In deutscher Sprache nahm Gitte Haenning als Erste Webbers Songzyklus als Konzeptalbum auf und landete mit „Freu dich bloß nicht zu früh“ einen großen Hit. In einer kleinen, aber feinen Instrumentalbesetzung ist „Tell Me on a Sunday“ ein großes Musicalereignis für einen kleinen Theatersaal.
