  • Musicals in Post-Globalization: the Case of “Ever-Growing” Musicals from Vienna Via Japan
ReVisions Musicals in Post- Globalization: the Case of “Ever-Growing” Musicals from Vienna via Japan Rina Tanaka Published on: Mar 14, 2017 Updated on: Jan 04, 2018 ReVisions Musicals in Post-Globalization: the Case of “Ever-Growing” Musicals from Vienna via Japan 1. Introduction The end of the globalization era meant the beginning of new methods, regardless of regional predominance. Today, a new style of performances is coming from non-English-speaking countries even in the genre of musical, which is originally from English-speaking countries. However, it has been overlooked due to the commercial or even mass productive nature of musicals (McMillin 2006, pp. 28- 29), which has been a dominant pattern in musicals for decades[1]. How have musicals been changing in the post-globalization era? This paper analyzes the interactions established between Vienna and Japan by musicals since the 1990s as a possible illustration of the post- global theater. It consists of the following four parts. Section 1 presents two key concepts of this paper, “post-global” and “interweaving cultures in performances” as well as the current situation regarding musicals. Section 2 deals with the short history of musicals in Vienna in the post-war era until the launch of the first successful “Wiener [Viennese]” musical Elisabeth. As Vienna started taking its musical productions to the world, Japan was the first importer of Elisabeth. Section 3 considers two adaptations of Elisabeth in Japan as examples, indicating the reactions of other countries as well as Vienna, including the “re-import” phenomenon. After the great popularity of the Wiener musicals in Japan and the successive adaptations in the world, a new type of co-production developed in Japan.

The title of the musical is taken from the group's 1975 chart-topper "Mamma Mia!". Ulvaeus and Andersson were involved in the development of the show from the beginning. Anni-Frid Lyngstad, who was also a member of ABBA, has been involved financially in the production and been present at many of the premieres around the world.

  • Why Are Abba So Popular?
http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20140415-why-are-abba-so-popular 15 April 2014 Why are Abba so popular? By Andrew Harrison (AP) The Swedish group burst onto the world stage 40 years ago this month – and are still one of the most successful bands of all time. Andrew Harrison asks why. When you’ve sold as many records as Abba have – and only The Beatles have sold more – specific figures become hazy. They disappear into a statistical stratosphere occupied by a tiny elite of global megastars. There are simply too many territories to report on, too many releases to keep track of, too many vast numbers to juggle. All one can say with any certainty is that the Swedish quartet have sold in excess of 380m albums and singles since they first came to prominence 40 years ago this month, winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with a performance of Waterloo that still ranks as the high point of the much-maligned transcontinental cheese-fest. At their commercial zenith in the late ‘70s Abba were reputedly second only to Volvo in their contribution to Sweden’s exports. Such was the demand for their music that their management had to arrange for royalties from the Soviet Union to be paid in oil commodity rights rather than the embargoed rouble. This was unprecedented popularity for an act from outside the English-speaking world, and as the recorded music business accustoms itself to the reduced circumstances of the digital age it seems unlikely that another artist will ever better it. Meanwhile, critically rehabilitated and driven on by the Mamma Mia! juke-box musical which has now played to over 54m people worldwide, the band’s records continue to sell.

  • Abba's Benny Andersson
Bill Oppenheim, October 26, 2011-The Name of the Game: Abba=s Benny Andersson THE NAME OF THE GAME: ABBA'S BENNY ANDERSSON In October, 1964, two months before his 18th birthday, Benny Andersson joined the Swedish pop band, The Hep Stars--later known as Athe Swedish Beatles@--as their keyboardist. Four and a half decades later the music of Benny Andersson and his writing partner of 45 years, Bjorn Ulvaeus, is played as much, if not more, than the tunes of Lennon and McCartney. Benny and Benny Andersson Bjorn, as they used to be known, were the BB=s of ABBA, and its spinoff of almost two decades later, the musical >Mamma Mia.= ABBA are cited by Wikipedia as the number four best-selling music artists of all time, while the musical is cited by the same source as having been seen by 42 million people worldwide and grossing more than $2-billion. The film version, released in 2008, is reported to be the highest grossing movie musical of all time. >Popular= doesn=t even begin to describe it. To racing professionals, and a lesser degree the racing public, in Britain and Europe, Benny Andersson is not just a superstar songwriter and performer--he=s also an enthusiastic horse owner and breeder, having always had a horse or two with trainer John Dunlop for the last 15 years, beginning with Mondschein (>Moonlight= in German--named, like all Benny=s horses--after a song, something musical, in this case Beethoven=s Moonlight Sonata, or someone or something Swedish), a Rainbow Quest filly bought by Andersson as a yearling.

  • Musica Nel 1897 (La Prima Presentazione Avvenne Il 19 Giugno 1898, Sotto Adolf Čech)
JACOBSON LEOPOLD (librettista) Nato il 30 giugno 1878 a Chernivtsi (Chernovtsy, Ucraina ). Morto nell’agosto 1942.
