A REVIEW Abstract Ochna Schweinfurthiana(Os, Family
Review Article ETHNOBOTANY, PHYTOCHEMISTRY AND PHARMACOLOGY OF OCHNA SCHWEINFURTHIANA: A REVIEW Abstract Ochna schweinfurthiana(Os, Family: Ochnaceae) is a small evergreen tree used in ethnomedicine to treat different ailments; it is also used in agri-horticulture and as ornaments, dyes among others. Chemical investigations conducted on the different parts of the plant have been confined to phenolic compounds majorly bioflavonoids, glycosides, steroids and terpenes. The plant, Os have shown a wide spectrum of biological and pharmacological properties which include antimicrobial, cytotoxic/antiproliferative, genotoxicity, antinociceptive, anti- inflammatory, antioxidant and antiplasmodial. This review comprehensively summarize the potential effects of the plant Os chemically and pharmacologically (in vitro and in vivo). However, more researches in the aspect of phytochemical and biological studies are needed to exhaustively isolate bioactive compounds and evaluate their effects on other ailments as claimed by the traditional healers. Introduction Ochna schweinfurthiana(Os)belonging to the Ochnaceaefamily is a small tree that was named after a German botanical collector and taxonomist Dr. Georg August Schweinfurth; it is an attractive tropical small tree that measures up to 4 m tall and the plant is commonly known as the brick-red Ochna in English, Jan-taru in Hausa language, Hiéké in Yoruba and Sa’aboule in Foufouldé (Burkill, 1985; Messi et al., 2016).The plant can be used as medicine, for agricultural, social and religious purposes (Burkill, 1985). This review will focus on the phytochemical and pharmacological properties of Os. 2. Main text 2.1 Botanical Description Ochna originated from a Greek word “Ochnewhich means wild pear”. -

SCHILLING, NICHOLAS MATTSON, AARON FLODEN Herbarium TENN Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology University of Tennessee Knoxville, Tennessee 37996 [email protected]; [email protected] ABSTRACT Results from barcoding studies of tribe Coreopsideae for the Tennessee flora using the nuclear ribosomal ITS marker are presented and include the first complete reports for 2 of the 20 species of the tribe that occur in the state, as well as updated reports for several others. Sequence data from the ITS region separate most of the species of Bidens in Tennessee from one another, but species of Coreopsis, especially those of sect. Coreopsis, have ITS sequences that are identical (or nearly so) to at least one congener. Comparisons of sequence data to GenBank records are complicated by apparent inaccuracies of older sequences as well as potentially misidentified samples. Broad survey of C. lanceolata from across its range showed little variability, but the ITS sequence of a morphologically distinct sample from a Florida limestone glade area was distinct in lacking a length polymorphism that was present in other samples. Tribe Coreopsideae is part of the Heliantheae alliance and earlier was often included in an expanded Heliantheae (Anderberg et al. 2007) in which it was usually treated as a subtribe (Crawford et al. 2009). The tribe shows a small burst of diversity in the southeastern USA involving Bidens and Coreopsis sect. -

(Poaceae: Panicoideae: Paniceae). Recent phylogenetic studies with morphological and molecular data provided evidence on the monophyly of the genera Cenchrus, Pennisetum and Odontelytrum. Therefore, these studies propose the unification and transfer of species of Pennisetum and Odontelytrum to the genus Cenchrus, which has priority. Nomenclatural problems were detected when conducting a preliminary taxonomic revision of the genus Cenchrus s.l. from America (Gutiérrez, in preparation). To resolve these inconveniences, nine lectotypifications: Cenchrus bambusoides Caro & E.A. Sánchez, C. brevisetus E. Fourn., C. pennisetiformis Hochst. & Steud. var. intermedia Chiov., C. roseus E. Fourn., Gymnotrix mexicana E. Fourn., Hymenachne montana Griseb., Pennisetum amoenum Hochst. ex A. Rich., P. cenchroides Rich. var. hamphilahense Terracc., P. ciliare (L.) Link var. anachoreticum Chiov., P. petraeum Steud., P. pringlei Leeke, P. tristachyum (Kunth) Spreng. subsp. boliviense Chase and a new name for Gymnotrix crinita Kunth are here proposed. [email protected] Keywords: Ochna integerrima, ITS, gene sequence, flower, species Abstract. Ochna integerrima is a medicinal and ornamental plant, is widely distributed in Southeast Asia areas. In Vietnam, it has been ranked as the rare and endangered species due to its high demand trade of the beautiful species. In this study, total 21 Ochna samples, collected from the northern and southern areas, were used to characterize the morphological traits using morphological analyses and molecular tool. The results have revealed that the morphological characterization of flower and its quality of Yen Tu Ochna samples showed differences in comparison with the common Ochna and southern Ochna samples. To accurately distinguish genetic traits of the samples, we have sequenced the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region (including ITS1, 5.8S) of 21 species. The results have disclosed the genetic correlations of the samples ranging from 96.25% to 100% among the studied Ochna samples, of which 5 samples include B1, B2, B3, B6 and N3.1 were divided into the separate groups. -

Smithsonian Contri- butions to Botany, number 52, 28 pages, 3 tables, 1981.-Chromosome reports are provided for 145 populations, including first reports for 33 species and three genera, Garcilassa, Riencourtia, and Helianthopsis. Chromosome numbers are arranged according to Robinson’s recently broadened concept of the Heliantheae, with citations for 212 of the ca. 265 genera and 32 of the 35 subtribes. Diverse elements, including the Ambrosieae, typical Heliantheae, most Helenieae, the Tegeteae, and genera such as Arnica from the Senecioneae, are seen to share a specialized cytological history involving polyploid ancestry. The authors disagree with one another regarding the point at which such polyploidy occurred and on whether subtribes lacking higher numbers, such as the Galinsoginae, share the polyploid ancestry. Numerous examples of aneuploid decrease, secondary polyploidy, and some secondary aneuploid decreases are cited. The Marshalliinae are considered remote from other subtribes and close to the Inuleae. Evidence from related tribes favors an ultimate base of X = 10 for the Heliantheae and at least the subfamily As teroideae.
