Created in 1990 by Tim Berners- Lee, the web quickly became the most used hypertext system in the world, and most browsers default to indicating hyperlinks with an underline. To answer the question of why the underline was chosen over competing demarcation techniques, the thesis applies the methods of history of technology and sociology of technology. Before the invention of the web, the underline–also known as the vinculum–was used in many contexts in writing systems; collecting entities together to form a whole and ascribing additional meaning to the content.

Mendeley: Creating Communities of Scholarly Inquiry Through Research Collaboration Holt Zaugg Richard E. West Isaku Tateishi Daniel L. Randall Abstract Mendeley is a free, web-based tool for organizing research citations and annotating their accompanying PDF articles. Adapting Web 2.0 principles for academic scholarship, Mendeley integrates the management of the research articles with features for collaborating with researchers locally and worldwide. In this article the features of Mendeley are discussed and critiqued in comparison to other, similar tools. These features include citation management, online synchronization and collaboration, PDF management and annotation, and integration with word processing software. The article concludes with a discussion of how a social networking tool such as Mendeley might impact the academic scholarship process. Keywords: social networking, research, online community, Web 2.0, citation management.

ulation with programs such as MacWrite as well as tables for transfer to Macintosh spreadsheet, database, or graphics pro- grams. We have sent text to other computers using MacTerminal but not to the IBM mainframe. MacTerminal provides for file transfer to and using the Xmodem protocol, and from other computers in ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) text (files can be pasted in text to other computers, but only a clipboard -full at a time. Its latest version allows the BACKSPACE key to be programmed to be a DELETE key (a menu selection), a convenience for DEC users. Tekalike (Mesa Graphics) isthe earliest graphics terminal emulator we used on the Macintosh. It emulates the Tektronix 4010, 4012, 4014 and 4016 graphics terminals (a later version we have not yet tested adds VT -100 and VT -640). It also provides the ability to pan and zoom on areas selected by the mouse and to save plots for MacPaint on MacDraw for full 300 dots -per -inch LaserWriter resolution. It was this program that first enabled us to consider the Macintosh as a replacement for graphics terminals. The Macintosh could not only view plots at its 512X342 resolution, but thanks to the pan and zoom, could view parts of plots at full 4014 (4096X3072) resolution, a feature then available only on much more expensive graphics terminals (some other personal computers now have programs for Tektronix 4010/4014 emulation, but the best known to me Start of waveform, magnified at this time zooms in 4X and only provides 1024X768 resolution at zoom; 4010, not 4014 resolution).

  • Autodesk and Autocad
Chapter 8 Autodesk and AutoCAD Autodesk as a company, has gone through several distinct phases of life. There were the “Early Years” which covers the time from when Autodesk was founded as a loose programmer-centric collaborative in early 1982 to the company’s initial public offering in 1985, the “Adolescent Years” during which the company grew rapidly but seemed to do so without any clear direction and the “Mature Years.” The beginning of the latter phase began when Carol Bartz became president and CEO in 1992 and continues to the current time. Even under Bartz, there were several well defined periods of growth as well as some fairly stagnant years.1 Mike Riddle gets hooked on computers Mike Riddle was born in California with computers in his veins. In junior high school, he built his first computer out of relays. It didn’t work very well, but it convinced him that computers were going to be an important part of his life. After attending Arizona State University, Riddle went to work for a steel fabricator where he had his first exposure to CAD. The company had a $250,000 Computervision system that, although capable of 3D work, was used strictly for 2D drafting. The company was engaged in doing steel detailing for the Palo Verde nuclear power plant in Arizona. Riddle felt that anything they were doing on this project with the Computervision system could be done on a microcomputer-based system. About the same time Riddle began working at a local Computerland store where they provided him with free computer time to do with as he wanted.

Policy Guide/Page 4 Symantec WSS Policy Guide The Symantec Web Security Service solutions provide real-time protection against web-borne threats. As a cloud-based product, the Web Security Service leverages Symantec's proven security technology, including the WebPulse™ cloud community. With extensive web application controls and detailed reporting features, IT administrators can use the Web Security Service to create and enforce granular policies that are applied to all covered users, including fixed locations and roaming users. If the WSS is the body, then the policy engine is the brain. While the WSS by default provides malware protection (blocks four categories: Phishing, Proxy Avoidance, Spyware Effects/Privacy Concerns, and Spyware/Malware Sources), the additional policy rules and options you create dictate exactly what content your employees can and cannot access—from global allows/denials to individual users at specific times from specific locations.
