It is cosmic explosions which build up the periodic table! Astronomers have now identified several classes of cosmic explosions of which supernovae constitute the largest group. The Palomar Transient Factory was an innovative 2-telescope experiment, and its successor, the Zwicky Transient Factory (ZTF), is a high tech project with gigantic CCD cameras and sophisticated software system, and squarely aimed to systematically find "blips and booms in the middle of the night". Shrinivas Kulkarni will talk about the great returns and surprises from this project: super-luminous supernovae, new classes of transients, new light on progenitors of supernovae, detection of gamma-ray bursts by purely optical techniques and troves of pulsating stars and binary stars. ZTF is poised to become the stepping stone for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. Short biography S. R. Kulkarni is the George Ellery Hale Professor of Astronomy at the California Institute of Technology. He served as Executive Officer for Astronomy (1997-2000) and Director of Caltech Optical Observatories for the period 2006-2018. He was recognized by Cornell Uniersity with an AD White Professor-at-Large appointment. Kulkarni received an honorary doctorate from the Radboud University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands. -

A NEW APPROACH TO UNRAMIFIED DESCENT IN BRUHAT-TITS THEORY By Gopal Prasad Dedicated to my wife Indu Prasad with gratitude Abstract. We present a new approach to unramified descent (\descente ´etale") in Bruhat-Tits theory of reductive groups over a discretely valued field k with Henselian valuation ring which appears to be conceptually simpler, and more geometric, than the original approach of Bruhat and Tits. We are able to derive the main results of the theory over k from the theory over the maximal unramified extension K of k. Even in the most interesting case for number theory and representation theory, where k is a locally compact nonarchimedean field, the geometric approach described in this paper appears to be considerably simpler than the original approach. Introduction. Let k be a field given with a nontrivial R-valued nonarchimedean valuation !. We will assume throughout this paper that the valuation ring × o := fx 2 k j !(x) > 0g [ f0g of this valuation is Henselian. Let K be the maximal unramified extension of k (the term “unramified extension" includes the condition that the residue field extension is separable, so the residue field of K is the separable closure κs of the residue field κ of k). While discussing Bruhat-Tits theory in this introduction, and beginning with 1.6 everywhere in the paper, we will assume that ! is a discrete valuation. Infosys Science Foundation INFOSYS PRIZE 2018 LEPIDOPTERA – WINGS WITH SCALES Those brilliant pigments that create magical colors on the wings of a butterfly is chemistry in play. That the pattern and tint are governed by its genes is what we learn from the field of genetics. And how can we separate nanoscience from this mystical being? The ‘nano’ chitin or tiny scales on the wings reflect light to create a mosaic of iridescent hues. When you see blue, purple, or white on a butterfly, that’s a structural color, while orange, yellow, and black are pigments. How overwhelming is this complexity! And how mystical the butterfly looks as it soars into the sky, its tiny scales aiding the flow of air – a marvel of aerodynamics! We divide this universe into parts – physics, biology, geology, astronomy, psychology and so on, but nature does not categorize. And so every small and big discovery by scientists and researchers from diverse fields come together to create a deeper understanding of our vast and interconnected universe. Oh yes, the powder that brushes off on your fingers when you touch a butterfly’s wings are the tiny scales breaking off, and that ‘slipperiness’ helps the butterfly escape the trap. But that touch may perhaps sadly contribute towards its demise. A caution therefore that we must tread carefully lest we hurt our world, for when we disturb one part of the universe, we may unknowingly create a butterfly effect. Exploring the time-varying Universe Chapter 5.1 The earliest start Richard Strom* Introduction The WSRT interferometrically measures Fourier components of the sky bright- ness distribution from a region set by the primary beam of the telescope ele- ments, at a radio frequency determined by the receiver. This information is used to construct a two-dimensional image of radio emission from the piece of sky observed. Because it is an east-west interferometer array, the information obtained at any instant of time can only be used to construct a one-dimensional map (the telescope so synthesized has the response of a fan beam – narrow in one direction, but orthogonally very elongated). -

Our entangled world All life on earth is so beautifully meshed together that to consider humans apart from the rest would be quite impertinent. In fact, humans as a species can hardly survive without their fellow living beings. There are a zillion reasons to believe this, and science has regularly unearthed more — microorganisms in our gut aid digestion; pollinators help seed the food we eat; green plants and phytoplankton produce oxygen that we breathe. And then there are the forward and backward chains of dependencies that make all this possible. And we have not yet explored even a fraction of the intricate relationships we have with all the inhabitants of earth. Some researchers question the assumption that all life is equally valuable. The idea being that we can do without many life forms that are just taking up space. So the coral ecosystem is of great value to human beings but what does a parrot fish do for us? Oh and those sordid roaches and dispensable rodents! A delightful ditty sums up this reservation, God in his wisdom Made the fly And then forgot To tell us, why? - Ogden Nash Is biodiversity indeed an indulgence? Is bringing visible advantage to us human beings the sole purpose of existence? Or are there finer equations we are missing? Michael Soule, the remarkable biologist held that ‘nature has intrinsic value beyond what it can afford humans.’ Researchers have discovered so many unique and fragile ecosystems of the world that hinge on a cautious chemistry between species. If one goes extinct, ripples will be felt across the environment. -

In his conversation with Jamshedji Tata, it was indicated that the spirit of austerity, service and renun- ciation, traditionally associated with monasticism could be united with the quest for Truth and Universality that Science embodies. An inevitable fruit of such a synthesis would be a vigorous pursuit of science as an aspect of Karma Yoga. Truth would be sought by research and the knowledge obtained disseminated through teach- ing, making knowledge universally available. The VivekanandaSchool of Mathematical Sciences at the fledgling Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University, headquartered at Belur, has been set up keeping these twin ide- als in mind. We shall first indicate that at the National level, a realization of these objectives would fulfill a deeply felt National need. 1.1. -
