  • The Term Soft Power Has Been Championed by Joseph S
Strategy for export of Kosovo’s cultural assets Olta Andoni* I. Introduction Kosovo, the NEWBORN state, is enjoying its independence. The long dreamed aspirations are more than real for Kosovo right now. Looking forward to the future and being recognized by more countries is another “war” for Kosovo. Seeking new avenues in this direction is the key to the newest state in the world. However, the next “war” of Kosovo has to be a muted and psychological one. Whether it will be successful or not depends on a series of factors. Kosovo, as a new independent state, is more focused on working toward the accession by new states, neglecting the relevance of the arts and culture in the process. But no development is expected without the interplay of the culture. If culture is defined as the entire system of beliefs, practices and customs that exist in a society, it is the foundation that supports every development.1 Economic development without cultural roots will never be sustainable.2 Relying on the power of art and culture is crucial for Kosovo’s future. This paper examines the importance of the art and culture on bridging the gap between a new state, its neighbors and the world. * LL.M. IP Candidate 2009, Chicago-Kent College of Law. Thank you to Prof. Perritt for encouraging the author to come up with a strategy to assist the export of cultural assets of the newest state in the world, Kosovo. 1The power of Culture, http://powerofculture.nl/en/theme/policy.html, (last visited on Dec.2, 2008).

Michal Šmíd [Praga] ● ● ● ● ● ● Memory of Nations narrates the Stories of the 20th Century Wrocławski Rocznik Historii Mówionej Rocznik VI, 2016 ISSN 2084–0578 Four people received the Memory of Nations Awards at the Prague State Opera House on 17 November, the day when we in the Czech Republic ce- lebrate the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day. For six years Post Bellum, a Czech non-profit organisation, along with its partners have been bestowing the Awards on witnesses who bring their testimonies to the ge- neral public with our help and who have proven with their very lives that integrity, courage and human dignity are not empty words. Las year we commemorated the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, so our nominations focused on people who experienced the war firsthand. Even- tually, the Awards were bestowed on Mrs Anna Hyndráková1 who survi- ved Auschwitz while all her relatives perished in gas chambers; Mr Viktor 1 See Anna Hyndráková’s testimony at the Memory of Nations portal: http://www. pametnaroda.cz/witness/index/id/95?locale=en_GB (accessed December 1, 2015), together with numerous additional sources like photos. Michal Šmíd 234 Wellemín2 who fought in the Middle East and on the Western Front as a member of the international Czechoslovak army; Mrs Lýdia Kovářová3 who, aged sixteen, concealed guerrillas from Nazi soldiers; and Branislav Tvarožek4 who was an active participant in the Slovak National Uprising. More witnesses, including Award winners from the previous years, were present in the audience. Discussing the evening, we realised that this may have been one of the last opportunities where we could encounter so many direct witnesses of the war in one place.

WTH is going on in Russia? Vladimir Kara- Murza on his arrest, the attempted murder of Alexei Navalny, and the growing anti-Putin movement inside Russia Episode #94 | March 17, 2021 | Danielle Pletka, Marc Thiessen, and Vladimir Kara-Murza Danielle Pletka: Hi, I'm Danielle Pletka. Marc Thiessen: And I'm Marc Thiessen. Danielle Pletka: Welcome to our podcast, , what the hell is going on now? Marc Thiessen: What the hell is going on is we have a podcast today that reminded me of why I got into foreign policy and why I had a passion for the battle for freedom. We just had a conversation with, and you're about to hear an interview, with Vladimir Kara-Murza, who is one of the courageous leaders of the Russian opposition. We spoke to him from Moscow and it's very fortuitous we were even able to get him because if we had scheduled this interview even a couple of days earlier, we would have been unable to have it because Vladimir Kara-Murza was in a prison cell. He was rounded up with all of the democratically elected opposition leaders from the local and municipal governments around the country who had gathered in Moscow to have a meeting. And the Putin regime rounded them up, arrested them, sent them to prisons, and is now going to prosecute them for collaborating with a hostile foreign organization, apparently the local governments of Russia are hostile foreign organizations. This guy is so courageous. He's been poisoned twice by the Putin regime and survived.

  • The Role of the Republic of Karelia in Russia's Foreign and Security Policy
Eidgenössische “Regionalization of Russian Foreign and Security Policy” Technische Hochschule Zürich Project organized by The Russian Study Group at the Center for Security Studies and Conflict Research Andreas Wenger, Jeronim Perovic,´ Andrei Makarychev, Oleg Alexandrov WORKING PAPER NO.5 MARCH 2001 The Role of the Republic of Karelia in Russia’s Foreign and Security Policy DESIGN : SUSANA PERROTTET RIOS This paper gives an overview of Karelia’s international security situation. The study By Oleg B. Alexandrov offers an analysis of the region’s various forms of international interactions and describes the internal situation in the republic, its economic conditions and its potential for integration into the European or the global economy. It also discusses the role of the main political actors and their attitude towards international relations. The author studies the general problem of center-periphery relations and federal issues, and weighs their effects on Karelia’s foreign relations. The paper argues that the international contacts of the regions in Russia’s Northwest, including those of the Republic of Karelia, have opened up opportunities for new forms of cooperation between Russia and the EU. These contacts have en- couraged a climate of trust in the border zone, alleviating the negative effects caused by NATO’s eastward enlargement. Moreover, the region benefits economi- cally from its geographical situation, but is also moving towards European standards through sociopolitical modernization. The public institutions of the Republic

  • Honoring Vladimir Bukovsky by Vladimir Kara-Murza
The Schwarz Report Dr. Fred Schwarz Volume 53, Number 4 Dr. David Noebel April 2013 Honoring Vladimir Bukovsky by Vladimir Kara-Murza On Sunday, December 30, Vladimir Bukovsky—writer, scientist, human rights campaigner, and one of the founders of the dissident movement in the USSR—celebrated his 70th birthday. IMR Senior Policy Advisor Vladimir Kara-Murza recalls the milestones in Bukovsky’s life—and urges the present-day Russian opposition to heed his advice. Vladimir Bukovsky does not like to be called a politician, preferring to be known as a neurophysiologist, writer, or, at the very least, civic activist. In truth, he never engaged in politics: he merely realized, at an early age, that he could not reconcile himself to live quietly with a criminal and mendacious regime that sought to make millions of people its silent accomplices. Bukovsky’s protest was a moral one. “We did not play politics, we did not draft programs for the ‘people’s liberation,’” he recalls in his memoirs, To Build a Castle (a must-read for anyone interested in Russian history). “Our only weapon was glasnost (openness). Not propaganda, but glasnost, so that no one could say ‘I did not know.’ The rest is a matter for each person’s conscience.” “I did not know” was a popular answer among members of the older generation when asked by the youngsters of the 1950s about Stalin’s times. The public condemnation of Stalinist crimes at the 1956 Communist Party congress and (almost immediately) the brutal suppression of the Hungarian revolution, which showed that the nature of the regime has not changed, were formative events for Bukovsky.
