The Anoka-Hennepin Teachers of Color Coalition and are pleased to offer a new professional development opportunity for educators of color in their first five years of teaching during the 2017-2018 school year.

ECS 590 CE: Early Career Educators of Color Seminar

SEMINAR LEARNING GOALS Teachers participating in this course will have opportunities to:

● Explore the intersections of cultural identity and teacher identity. ● Investigate critical consciousness and critical pedagogy. ● Develop leadership and advocacy skills. ● Acquire tools for navigating the micropolitics of schools. ● Practice strategies for maintaining a healthy work / life balance. ● Improve the efficacy of their curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices. ● Build on ongoing community of support with other educators of color.

COURSE STRUCTURE

Seminar: Monthly face to face seminar held the first Thursday of each month, 6 to 9 pm, in Augsburg’s ​ Riverside Room, second floor, Christensen Student Center, 720 22nd Ave South, . http://www.augsburg.edu/about/map/ Meeting dates for 2017-18 will be: September 7, October 5, ​ November 2, December 7, January 4, February 1, March 1, April 5, May 3, and June 7.

Reflection: Monthly professional reading and reflection. ​

Inquiry: A guided inquiry project each semester to complement the work of early career teachers. ​

Mentorship: Opportunities to collaborate with experienced educators of color. ​

INSTRUCTORS

Justin Grinage is an African American educator with eleven years of experience teaching high school ​ English and AVID. He recently earned his Ph.D. in Culture and Teaching from the University of ​ ​ . He is currently a Postdoctoral Associate in Curriculum & Instruction at the .

Vanhtha Rasavong is a Laotian-American educator with thirteen years of experience teaching English ​ Learners at Champlin Park HS. He earned his M.Ed. from the University of Minnesota.

Meng Yang is a Hmong-American educator with eleven years experience teaching English. He earned his ​ M.Ed. from Bethel University. He is currently the AVID Program Coordinator at Champlin Park HS.

TUITION & REGISTRATION

This course is available through Augsburg’s Continuing Education program. Participants do not need to be a currently enrolled Augsburg student to register. Tuition for this Continuing Education course is $400 and includes nine continuing education units (CEUs). Two semester graduate credits are available for an additional $100.
