In this breach-of-contract case, Plaintiff Andrea Lea, Auditor of the State of Arkansas (Arkansas), claims that Arkansas has obtained title under the state’s Unclaimed Property Act to a large but unknown number of matured, unredeemed United States savings bonds, and that the government has wrongfully failed to redeem those bonds. The bonds, issued by the United States Department of the Treasury (Treasury), carry thirty- or forty-year maturity periods. Although Arkansas claims that it owns the bonds, it does not possess the bond certificates that Treasury issued when the bonds were purchased.

Roxie Hart is the iconic free-spirited 1920’s flapper transformed into a destructively willful, reckless, self-centred and amoral media darling. Taken to the extreme, she’s the troubling threat to the establishment posed by a generation of young women flaunting social conventions, dress codes and manners, enjoying sexual freedom, self-determination and demanding what they most want out of life. Phyllis Haver (1899-1960) plays Roxie to perfection in a sparkling performance of devious charm, ruthless determination and brilliant comic timing. Tonight is a rare opportunity to rediscover her talent and celebrate the work of an almost forgotten star. Haver began her career in cinema accompanying silent films on piano, became a Mack Sennett Bathing Beauty and then got her big break as an actress, appearing in over 35 films for the Sennett Studios from 1916-20 before signing with DeMille-Pathé. She worked with some of the most revered artists of her day including Buster Keaton, Lon Chaney, Howard Hawks, Raoul Walsh and D.W. Griffith. There’s no doubt that Haver’s star quality and comedic flair elevate Chicago above a simple black and white morality tale. Her career defining performance was praised by critics as “astoundingly fine”, an impressive combination of “comedy and tragedy”.

DE MILLE AND THE ART OF APPLIED SUGGESTIBILITY: VIOLENCE, SEX AND FALSE MEMORIES WITHIN HIS BIBLICAL (AND OTHER) CINEMA Abstract Legendary producer-director Cecil B. DeMille is an unsung auteur who helped co-found both Hollywood and Paramount studios and became America’s pre-eminent biblical filmmaker. He employed many artistic strategies, but none as politically astute as the deliberate engineering of false memories in a deliberate act of applied suggestibility. This trademark effort allowed DeMille to achieve desired audience reactions whilst simultaneously avoiding censorship problems and moral vigilantes who thought they saw objectionable things in his movies but which were not actually there. Consequently, selected DeMille films and the associated critical literature were inspected, reviewed and integrated into the text to enhance narrative coherence utilizing humanist film criticism as the guiding analytical lens. It was concluded that DeMille was a master filmmaker and that his cinematic oeuvre warrants a more thoughtful re-evaluation than evidenced to date. Further research into DeMille studies is therefore highly warranted, warmly recommended and already long overdue. Introduction: The DeMillean Genesis of an Aesthetic Phenomenon Producer-director(1) Cecil B. DeMille(2) (1881-1959), affectionately known as ”CB,” was a seminal cofounder of Hollywood, a progenitor of Paramount studios, and an icon of American movies who pioneered numerous innovations in both the arts and sciences of the cinema throughout his seventy-feature film history (Birchard; Cherchi Usai and Codelli; DeMille and Hayne; Edwards; Essoe and Lee; Eyman; Higashi Guide, Culture; Higham; Koury; Louvish; Noerdlinger; Orrison; Ringgold and Bodeen).

The feats of strength of Samson were most impressive to a callow youth unaware of the tricks of the movie industry! Samson and Delilah, is an enjoyable romp, which both stars appear to have relished. Whilst not a profound film, it is a fitting tribute to two stars who were interesting individuals at a period when the studios ruled the lives of their contracted stars extremely closely. Cecil B De Mille directed the film, and it is of course one of the numerous spectacularly lavish and colourful biblical epics he made. Another reason for selecting this film was simply to show that our Committee has a good sense of humour and does not consider itself too seriously! ************************************* Hedy Lamarr passed away on 19 January 2000. In this film, she was an impressive attraction to any young teenager. Her allure was heightened by the startling news of her early nude acting role. Born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in Vienna on 9 November 1914, she enrolled in Max Reinhardt’s acting school and he was so convinced of her potential that he took her on as a personal pupil.
