Roxie Hart is the iconic free-spirited 1920’s flapper transformed into a destructively willful, reckless, self-centred and amoral media darling. Taken to the extreme, she’s the troubling threat to the establishment posed by a generation of young women flaunting social conventions, dress codes and manners, enjoying sexual freedom, self-determination and demanding what they most want out of life. Phyllis Haver (1899-1960) plays Roxie to perfection in a sparkling performance of devious charm, ruthless determination and brilliant comic timing. Tonight is a rare opportunity to rediscover her talent and celebrate the work of an almost forgotten star. Haver began her career in cinema accompanying silent films on piano, became a Mack Sennett Bathing Beauty and then got her big break as an actress, appearing in over 35 films for the Sennett Studios from 1916-20 before signing with DeMille-Pathé. She worked with some of the most revered artists of her day including Buster Keaton, Lon Chaney, Howard Hawks, Raoul Walsh and D.W. Griffith. There’s no doubt that Haver’s star quality and comedic flair elevate Chicago above a simple black and white morality tale. Her career defining performance was praised by critics as “astoundingly fine”, an impressive combination of “comedy and tragedy”. -

Minahen Graduate Program in French and Italian Copyright by Rebecca H. Bias 2005 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines French music-hall cinema from 1930-1950. The term “music-hall cinema” applies to films that contain any or all of the following: music-hall performers, venues, mise en scène, revues, and music- hall songs or repertoire. The cinema industry in France owes a great debt to the music-hall industry, as the first short films near the turn of the century were actually shown as music-hall acts in popular halls. Nonetheless, the ultimate demise of the music hall was in part due to the growing popularity of cinema. Through close readings of individual films, the dynamics of music-hall films will be related to the relevant historical and cultural notions of the period. The music-hall motif will be examined on its own terms, but also in relation to the context or genre that underlies each particular film. The music-hall motif in films relies overwhelmingly on female performers and relevant feminist film theory of the 1970s will help support the analysis of female performance, exhibition, and relevant questions of spectatorship. Music-hall cinema is an important motif in French film, and the female performer serves as the prominent foundation in these films. -

When a Man Loves inaugura anche la rassegna che le Giornate dedicano ai Barrymore , e il protagonista del film è l’esponente più famoso, intelligente, romantico e tormentato della famiglia, John, nonno di Drew Barrymore, ultima discendente della più grande dinastia dello spettacolo americano. Protagonista femminile Dolores Costello, terza moglie di John e nonna di Drew. John era uno dei più grandi attori della sua epoca, e si divideva tra il teatro e il cinema, dove riusciva ad ottenere ingaggi estremamente favorevoli. Laurence Olivier, che da ragazzo lo vide recitare, ebbe a dichiarare che quando John Barrymore entrava in scena era come vedere sorgere il sole. -

Envisioning LOUISIANA A concert presented by The Historic New Orleans Collection & the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra “Envisioning Louisiana” is the seventh installment of Musical Louisiana: America’s Cultural Heritage, an annual series presented by The Historic New Orleans Collection and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. Dedicated to the study of Louisiana’s contributions to the world of classical music, the award-winning program also provides educational materials to more than two thousand fourth- and eighth-grade teachers in Louisiana’s public and private schools. Since the program’s inception, Musical Louisiana has garnered both local and national recognition. The 2008 presentation, “Music of the Mississippi,” won the Big Easy Award for Arts Education; “Made in Louisiana” (2009) received an Access to Artistic Excellence grant from the National Endowment for the Arts; and “Identity, History, Legacy: La Société Philharmonique” (2011) received an American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. “Envisioning Louisiana” celebrates the rich natural history of Louisiana and explores how composers have depicted the state and its people through music. The concert complements the exhibition Seeking the Unknown: Natural History Observations in Louisiana, 1698–1840, on view February 23 through June 2, 2013, at The Historic New Orleans Collection, 533 Royal Street. The eighteenth annual Williams Research Center Symposium, Seeking the Unknown: Perspectives on Louisiana’s Natural History, taking place February 23, 2013, further explores the same theme.
