Sabato 4 ottobre, Teatro Comunale Giuseppe Verdi di Pordenone Muto ma non troppo. Il film che sabato 4 ottobre alle 20.30 inaugura la 33.ma edizione delle Giornate del Cinema Muto , al Teatro Verdi di Pordenone fino all’11 ottobre prossimo, When a Man Loves (Per amore di una donna), è infatti uno dei migliori esempi di sonorizzazione che si facevano negli anni Venti. Esito scontato, essendo il film un adattamento del celebre romanzo dell’Abbè Prevost Manon Lescaut , che aveva ispirato già tre opere liriche, ma soprattutto perché autore delle musiche è il compositore e direttore d’orchestra Henry Kimbell Hadley , musicista all’epoca famosissimo. When a Man Loves inaugura anche la rassegna che le Giornate dedicano ai Barrymore , e il protagonista del film è l’esponente più famoso, intelligente, romantico e tormentato della famiglia, John, nonno di Drew Barrymore, ultima discendente della più grande dinastia dello spettacolo americano. Protagonista femminile Dolores Costello, terza moglie di John e nonna di Drew. John era uno dei più grandi attori della sua epoca, e si divideva tra il teatro e il cinema, dove riusciva ad ottenere ingaggi estremamente favorevoli. Laurence Olivier, che da ragazzo lo vide recitare, ebbe a dichiarare che quando John Barrymore entrava in scena era come vedere sorgere il sole. When a Man Loves fu una realizzazione molto costosa ripagata da un grande successo tant’è che il film rimase in cartellone a Manhattan per più di 5 mesi. Per la serata inaugurale le Giornate propongono esattamente il programma della prima del febbraio 1927 al Selwyn Theatre di New York e come allora il film di Alan Crosland viene preceduto da tre cortometraggi che illustrano le meraviglie del sistema Vitaphone con esibizioni di celebrità della lirica, tra cui Beniamino Gigli. La rassegna sui Barrymore viene introdotta da un programma di argute e sofisticate commedie girate tra il 1913 e il 1917 dallo zio di Lionel, Ethel e John Barrymore, Sidney Drew , il primo membro della famiglia allargata a entrare nel mondo del cinema. Nel pomeriggio inizia con La cameriera Jenny (1918) anche la rassegna “Risate russe” che prevede la presentazione completa delle commedie mute sopravvissute di Yakov Protazanov . A seguire, la proiezione del documentario In cerca del “Pochta” perduto (2014). Realizzato con il contributo del Ministero della Cultura della Russia, il progetto ebbe origine proprio alle Giornate di due anni fa, quando gli autori realizzarono a Pordenone interviste a storici e studiosi presenti alla presentazione del Pochta muto, un capolavoro dell’animazione tra i più amati. Del film fu fatta nel 1930 una versione sonora andata perduta ed è questo l’oggetto della ricerca di cui parla il film.     ABSTRACT Abbé Prévost’s novel L’Histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut (1731) has inspired at least four operas, notably by Daniel Auber, Jules Massenet, Giacomo Puccini, and Hans Werner Henze. This study will look at the three nineteenth- century operas based on that novel: Auber’s Manon Lescaut (1856), Massenet’s Manon (1884), and Puccini’s Manon Lescaut (1893). Massenet’s treatment receives the most attention because it is the most popular, and arguably the most well-known, of the three operas. I will discuss Manon’s role in the novel and operas, and its impact on the dramatic conception of each work. In the three operas I will examine her arias and other music, and her relationships with other characters. The goal is to gain a better understanding of each composer’s interpretation of Prévost’s heroine and to explore why Manon is different in each work.     THE OPERATIC VITAPHONE SHORTS By William Shaman On 6 August 1926 "Vitaphone," the latest commercial sound-on-disc motion picture system, made its debut at the Warners' Theater in New York City. The feature film that evening, "Don Juan," with John Barrymore and Mary Astor, was a lavish costume picture with a pre-recorded soundtrack consisting of synchronized sound effects and a Spanish-flavored score written by Major Edward Bowes, David Mendoza, and Dr. William Axt, played by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under Henry Hadley. There was no spoken dialogue. Eight short subjects preceded "Don Juan:" Will H. Hays, president of the Motion Picture Producers Association, welcoming the Vitaphone in a spoken address; the Overture to Tannhauser played by the New York Philharmonic, again with Hadley conducting; violinist Mischa Elman, accompanied by pianist Josef Bonime, playing Dvorak's "Humoresque" and Gossec's "Gavotte;" Roy Smeck, "Wizard of the Strings," in a medley of Hawaiian guitar, ukulele, and banjo solos; violinist Efrem Zimbalist and pianist Harold Bauer playing the theme and variations from Beethoven's "Kreutzer" Sonata, and three solos by singers Marion Talley, Giovanni Martinelli and Anna Case. By all accounts, the show was a resounding success. A steady flow of shorts and part-talking features would follow, beginning with the second Vitaphone show on 7 October 1926. On 6 October 1927 "The Jazz Singer" premiered in New York. The other major Hollywood studios, anticipating a favorable public response to sound films, had been involved in clandestine negotiations since 1926 and now were scrambling to secure a share of this lucrative new market.

The richest source for information about this extremely prominent screenwriter is Eighty Odd Years in Hollywood, the autobiography of Meredyth’s son, John Meredyth Lucas. This text, too, however, leaves large gaps in detail and in the chronology of the author’s mother’s career, and the son reflects: “It, unfortunately, never seemed important that I learn Mother’s early history. She never wrote it, only mentioned a few disconnected anecdotes. I never asked. By the time the questions were formed, the answers had died” (19). Born Helen MacGlashan in Buffalo, New York, Bess Meredyth’s father was the manager of a local theatre, and she began working as an organist and later a vaudeville light comedienne in her teens. She came to Hollywood in 1911, working as an extra for the Biograph Company for a short while, and quickly began writing scenarios on a freelance basis to supplement her income. While at Biograph, Bess Meredyth met and married actor and director Wilfred Lucas, who became her frequent collaborator. In 1914, the couple left Biograph to run their own unit at the Universal Manufacturing Company, where she became a fairly well-known comic actress, appearing primarily in “Willy Walrus” and “Bess the Detectress” shorts.

    PRESERVATION EXAMPLES: SILENTS TO THE DAWN OF SOUND For the first two decades of the motion picture, feature films as such did not exist. The short subject was the featured attraction in cinemas, offering patrons comedies, dramas, adventures, westerns, cartoons, documentaries, scenics, and trickfilms, all in as little as one reel or less. By the 1920s, the feature-length film of five reels and longer had assumed prominence, and the short subject was relegated as support to create a well-balanced program, a dynamic in theaters that continued well into the sound era. The UCLA Film and Television Archive strives to achieve a balance in its preservation program between feature films and short subjects. While several hundred features have been preserved by the Archive since the 1970s, more than a thousand shorts have been saved during that same period. Unfortunately, not all of the films preserved by UCLA The UCLA Film and Television Archive has preserved more are pristine.
