The visual aspects of Le Mage Michela Niccolai The first part of Massenet’s career was marked by the composition of several grand operas: Le Roi de Lahore (1877), Hérodiade (1881), Le Cid (1885) and Le Mage (1891). The latter , produced at the Paris Opéra, directed at that time by Ritt and Gailhard, was lavishly staged and the number of costumes was extraordinary. Even so, it remained on the bill, between spring and autumn 1891, for just thirty-one performances, from the première on 16 March. The new work was not received with great enthusiasm in the press. Henry Moreno (pen name of the publisher Henri Heugel) reported in the columns of Le Ménestre l: Pointless cliché: that is what characterises Le Mage . [...] Monsieur Massenet is obviously in a difficult period, in which he is no longer able to see clear - ly the path he had been following so successfully since the beginning. Like his hero Zarastra, he is badly in need of a spell of contemplation. He would do well to withdraw to the holy mountain to consider the dangers of over- hasty production, and then return to us stronger, fortified, ready to take on new challenges. We examined 251 adult flat bugs from Louisiana in the Louisiana State Arthropod Museum, confirming the presence of 4 species (Aradus falleni Stål, Acaricoris ignotus Harris and Drake, Notapictinus aurivilli (Bergroth), and Mezira sayi Kormilev) and adding 14 more in 4 subfamilies (Aneurinae: Aneurus fiskei Heidemann, Aneurus pygmaeus Kormilev; Aradi- nae: Aradus acutus Say, Aradus aequalis Say, Aradus kormilevi Heiss, Aradus ornatus Say, Aradus robustus Uhler; Carventinae: Neoproxius gypsatus (Bergroth); Mezirinae: Neurocte- nus pseudonymus Bergroth, Neuroctenus simplex (Uhler), Mezira emarginata (Say), Mezira froeschneri Davidová-Vilímová et al., Mezira granulata (Say), and Mezira lobata (Say)) to the state’s fauna. Habitats recorded for these species are discussed. HASTINGS1 SYNOPSIS: The establishment of the fish fauna on a new jetty at East Pass at the mouth of Choctawhatchee Bay, Okaloosa County, Florida, was studied from June, 1968, to January, 1971. Important components of the jetty fauna during its initial stages of development were: (a) original residents that exhibit some attraction to reef habitats, including some sand-beach inhabitants, several pelagic species, and a few ubiquitous estuarine species; and (b) reef fishes originating from permanent populations on offshore reefs. -

The present list of Arkansas amphibians and reptiles has been compiled with a twofold purpose in view: (1) to place on record a number of sjDecies collected by the senior author, which have not been reported from the state previously; (2) to form as complete a list of these animals as our present imperfect knowledge of the her- petology of the state will permit. In the United States National Museum Collection are a number of specimens obtained by Marcy, Shumard and other members of the Eed River Expedition. Some of these are labeled ''Red River, Ark.," and "Fort Towson, Red River, Ark.," but were not collected within the limits of the present State of Arkansas. Such species as Biifo cognatus Say, TJiamnophis mar- ciana B. & G., Heterodon nascius B. & G., and Crotaliis confluentiis Say are members of an entirely different faunal region and are not likely to range east of central Oklahoma. Ruthvent has called attention to the fact that Oklahoma examples of Thatnnophis radix B. & G. are hard to distinguish from T. marciana. Examples of marciana from north-central Texas are not typical, and it is extremely doubtful whether this snake occurs north of Texas. Fort Towson is situated in southeastern Oklahoma. Probably all of the species collected at this station will CD ultimately be found in southwestern Arkansas. -

A common resident except in the swampsections of the southeasternpart of the State; but even in this low, fertile alluvial district, the Bob-white is fairly well establishedabout ' the large sugar plantations, the thorough drainage of the land in such .casesproviding a suitable habitat for the species. In the uplands, this bird is most abundant in piney sections. In the southernpart of the State mating beginsabout March 1, and nestingis well under way by the middle •of April. Two broodsare frequently reared, and birds just beginningto fly may often be seenas late as September1. The natural cover of Bob-whites in the piney sectionsis the edges of the runs or "branches" with which such country is interspersed. The birds usually seeksuch cover when flushedin the open pines. The thicket- like growths of small oak and hickory and of such shrubs and vines as witchhazel, smilax, and sumach that often occur in the higher portions .of the pine woods also serve as excellent cover for Bob-whites, from a standpoint of both food and shelter. -

Esito scontato, essendo il film un adattamento del celebre romanzo dell’Abbè Prevost Manon Lescaut , che aveva ispirato già tre opere liriche, ma soprattutto perché autore delle musiche è il compositore e direttore d’orchestra Henry Kimbell Hadley , musicista all’epoca famosissimo. When a Man Loves inaugura anche la rassegna che le Giornate dedicano ai Barrymore , e il protagonista del film è l’esponente più famoso, intelligente, romantico e tormentato della famiglia, John, nonno di Drew Barrymore, ultima discendente della più grande dinastia dello spettacolo americano. Protagonista femminile Dolores Costello, terza moglie di John e nonna di Drew. John era uno dei più grandi attori della sua epoca, e si divideva tra il teatro e il cinema, dove riusciva ad ottenere ingaggi estremamente favorevoli. Laurence Olivier, che da ragazzo lo vide recitare, ebbe a dichiarare che quando John Barrymore entrava in scena era come vedere sorgere il sole.
